Inara Chowdhury Honored As Volunteer Of The Year

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) recently recognized Inara Chowdhury of Deer Park as the 2023 Deer Park High School Volunteer of the Year.

Ms. Chowdhury, graduating later this month, has balanced academics and community service with her house of worship and was selected by the school for this honor. She learned she was recipient of the award during the high school’s senior awards ceremony on Thursday, June 1 where Legislator Donnelly presented her with a County Proclamation and also surprised her with a small monetary award from the Donnelly family.

“As a proud alumni of Deer Park High School and the father of three daughters who

also graduated from the school and were equally committed to volunteerism, it was particularly special to

recognize Inara for her many accomplishments,” said Legislator Donnelly.

“I wish her the best in all of her future endeavors.”

New Golf Club Ends Season With Top Golf Trip

America’s VetDogs is a non-profit organization, headquartered in Smithtown. They train and provide service and guide dogs for veterans, activeduty military and first responders with disabilities.

This year they placed their 1000th service dog and reduced the waiting time to receive one from 2-3 years to 9-12 months. Long Island resident Nathan Gardner is one of many veterans who have benefited greatly from America’s VetDogs and he’s eager to share his experience in hopes that it inspire others whose lives could be changed with the help of a special canine friend.

Some years ago, Nathan, who comes from a family with a strong military background, got in a car accident. He was left without reliable transportation, which left him frustrated. He was faced with a lot of down time and eventually decided to visit a recruiting o ce in his spare time. “I walked into the Air Force recruitment o ce, because I knew I liked what they could o er me.” He soon joined and became part of the Air Force Security Forces. “I actually ended up loving the job, loving the career. I was very happy with it.”

He served for 5 years, primarily working in nuclear weapons security, where he was required to wear full battle gear. This included a plated vest, all his equipment, two weapons, a bag full of gear and ammunition. “The weight of everything I was carrying ended up taking a toll on me.” He later found out he had a herniated disc, which has worsened since he left the service. Eventually, he developed two herniated discs, sciatic nerve damage and an atrophied calf muscle, which led to ankle problems.

Nathan learned of America’s VetDogs through the Veterans Resource Center at Su olk County Community College. “A lot of the things I was reading in the brochure matched what I was looking for and what I needed,” he said. “I wish I knew about the program sooner.”

Nathan reached out to America’s VetDogs

and was able to be placed with a service dog at no cost. He met and trained with his service dog, Kenzo, in February of 2022.

“It had gotten to the point where I would lock up, fall to the ground and not be able to move,” he explained. “So Kenzo has been trained to get me help. Training with him has been a life-changing experience. He has taught me how to handle myself and my disability appropriately and I really like how my mindset has shifted into a more positive place.”

Nathan has been able to flourish in ways he never could without a service dog. He recently graduated from St. Joseph’s University and will begin pursuing an MBA this fall. He has served as Vice President of the Long Island Campus Chapter of the Student Veterans of America and has new self confidence that he couldn’t imagine having years ago.

“Accomplishing these things means a lot to me in terms of what my future can now look like,” said Gardner, who attended his recent college graduation ceremony with Kenzo, his service dog. “I’m the first person in my family to get an undergraduate degree and I’m pursuing my graduate degree. I’m very proud of that. Getting Kenzo has been one of the best things for me.”

The new Golf Club at Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School was started last fall by fourth-grade teacher Zack King, intended as an introductory program to the sport of golf. The club was composed of 20 boys and girls from third through fifth grade, and ran on Tuesday afternoons from October until May. As a culminating event, the club took a field trip

to Top Golf Long Island in Holtsville.

“I grew up around the sport of golf and have worked at a country club in Westchester County during my summers since the age of 13,” King said. “Using the generous donations of 20 junior golf club sets, hitting mats and golf balls from Brae Burn Country Club, I developed a teaching program that taught the students the

basics of the sport of golf, beginning with putting and progressing through the different clubs until we learned to hit the driver. We ended our season at Top Golf, where the students got to have a great time showing off all they had learned about golf through the year. My ultimate vision for this program is to grow interest in the sport and develop the district golf program.

Ten Deer Park Senior Athletes Sign To Play In College

Ten hardworking Deer Park High School senior student-athletes recently committed to continuing their sports on the college or university level this fall during a recognition ceremony in the school’s

chorus room.

Alex Aiello will play football at SUNY Morrisville. He earned first and second team All-Division recognition and won the Ironman Award twice. Aiello’s major is undeclared.

Ava Capone will run track at Rider University. She earned All-County, AllLeague and MVP during her high school career. She plans to major in accounting.

Gianna Capone will play basketball at St. Joseph’s

University. She earned All-League, MVP and the Coach’s Award during her high school career. She plans to major in child study.

Kristin Farina will play lacrosse at SUNY Old Westbury. She plans to

major in early childhood education.

Nate Gordon will play basketball at SUNY Brockport. He earned AllState Honorable Mention, All-County, All-Conference, All-League and MVP during his high school career. Gordon plans to major in accounting.

Tyler Kuhn will play basketball at Manhattanville College. He plans to major in criminal justice.

Natalia Lee will run track at SUNY Binghamton. She earned All-County, AllLeague, MVP and was a three-time Scholar-Athlete during her high school career. Lee plans to major in biology.

Marco Milankovic will wrestle at Utica University. He won the Coach’s Award and Spirit Award during his high school career. Milankovic plans to major in physical education.

Rachmani Pierre will play football at Southern Connecticut State University.

He earned All-County, AllDivison and Newsday Top 100 during his high school career. Pierre plans to major in information systems.

Dmitri Tulloch will play soccer at Washington & Lee University. He earned All-League and All-County Honorable Mention during his high school career. Tulloch plans to major in business.

“We want to take the opportunity to recognize everybody, because it really takes a lifetime of hard work, dedication, sacrifice, commitment to achieve this,” District Administrator for Athletics, Physical Education, Health and Recreation Dominick Fontana said. “I am happy to hear that you are interested enough – and have the ability – to keep playing outside of these walls. Hopefully, you will go on to do good things for the next four as well, and no matter where you’re going, congratulations.”

A New Book Club For Those Affected By Breast Cancer

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is starting a lifeaffirming book club called the Warriors Book Club that is open to anyone affected by breast cancer. The group will zoom on Monday, July 10, from 7 pm to 8 pm.

The first book to be read is “The Getaway Girls” by Dee MacDonald, a funny romantic comedy about love, friends, family and self-discovery. The Warriors Book Club is the brainchild of Adelphi Hotline Volunteer Lynne Borah from Plainview. Borah, a 20-year breast cancer survivor, says “Reading is my favorite getaway,” which is why she decided to start the book club to help others escape from any difficulties they are having.

Pinelawn Memorial Park And Arboretum Announces 2023 Event Schedule

Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum, known for its exceptionally beautiful grounds, unique architectural monuments, flowing bronze fountains and world-class arboreta, announces its 2023 event schedule.

Included in the calendar are the park’s many educational outdoor programs that celebrate the importance of various beloved insect species including ladybugs and honey bees, and the vital role they play in the environment.

For the first time, Pinelawn will also host Jazz Under the Stars honoring some of the great jazz musicians who are resting peacefully at Pinelawn, including John Coltrane, Count Basie, Lloyd Trotman, Guy Lombardo and The Royal Canadians.

Pinelawn’s Arboretum, which was awarded Level II status from the International Arboretum Accreditation Program, ArbNet, is comprised of three distinct collections including the Noteworthy

Collection, the Primary Collection and the General Collection. The Noteworthy Collection includes the Arboretum’s highest quality and most historically significant stately and mature specimens, including 10 of its highest priority and valued trees. The Weeping Beech, its oldest tree at over 120 years old, has a crown size spread of 74 feet with its enormous, shapely mound of sweeping, pendulous branches and hanging branchlets.

Pinelawn’s Weeping Beech is considered priceless.

Pinelawn’s Nikko Maple, its rarest, is a species which originated in the high mountains of Japan and its Katsura features heart-shaped leaves which in the Spring, emerge as purple. Pinelawn has multiple large Katsura trees situated in one location, which is rather uncommon.

Pinelawn’s appreciation of history can be seen in the many historical monuments featured within the park, including the Statue of Normandie

and the Garden of Freedom’s Jefferson colonnade, which is inscribed with an excerpt from the Declaration of Independence and its signers in gold leaf. The Garden of Normandie is home to the Statue of Peace, one of the largest bronze statues ever cast in modern times. The refurbished, softly glowing, ton-and-a-half bronze establishes the serene mood of the garden.

Another significant piece on the property is the John Donne Memorial which was the first monument created for Pinelawn by designer, Ismar David in 1965, who then went onto design much of Pinelawn’s park area, helping to create the beauty that Pinelawn is known for today. The Fountain of Peace, which is set within an 11-acre garden, was also designed in part by Ismar David, and resides among eight stately 40-foot tall Georgia Marble columns, discovered in Atlanta by Pinelawn where they adorned the Federal Reserve Bank for decades.

At the Deer Park School District’s May 30 board of education meeting, personnel were honored for their years of dedicated service and retiring and newly tenured administrators, teachers and staff were recognized.

the seniors and their families. Music for the event, held in the school’s auditorium, was provided by the school’s superb jazz ensemble, directed by Louis Nicolosi.

Deer Park High School Inducts First Ever National English Honor Society Members

For the first time ever, Deer Park High School established a chapter of the National English Honor Society this year and recently inducted

its first 65 members. The induction ceremony included guest alumni who spoke on the importance of language and celebrating the

humanities.

Advised by ELA teachers Teresa Greco and Kristen Wallace, the English Honor Society is dedicated to literary achievement

and community service. The chapter is sponsored nationally by Sigma Tau Delta and seeks to recognize student accomplishment, as well

as providing service to English department activities.

“We have an amazing group of student leaders and a terrific adviser team

who put in so much effort to make this happen,” ELA Curriculum Associate Justin Uliano said. “I am so proud of them.”
