“Our Gold Award Girl Scouts are leaders in their community who are making measurable and sustainable change while still in high school said Tammy Severino, President and CEO of Girl Scouts of Suffolk County. “As they take action to transform their world, they gain

tangible, real-world skills and a civic-minded awareness that sets them apart from their peers. 96% of Gold Award Girl Scouts say their experience inspired their ongoing commitment to service or volunteering. Our Gold Award Girl Scouts are discovering they have the power to create the future they want for themselves and others, and we are proud and honored by their achievements.”

To earn a Gold Award, each recipient must complete two Senior or Ambassador Journeys or their Girl Scout Silver Award before beginning their Gold Award project. To meet the Girl Scout Gold Award requirements, each candidate must complete at least 80 hours toward their project.

Long Island Children’s Museum (LICM) Unveils New Community Mural

The Long Island Children's Museum (LICM) unveiled a brandnew 1,100-sq-ft public art piece that will serve as the fresh new "face" of the Museum for current and future generations of Long Islanders. Created by artist Viktoriya Basina along with Long Island children during a series of "paint parties" at the Museum over the course of three months, the collaborative process included community conversations with visitors to capture images and themes that reflect the Museum, its audience and Long Island. Feedback was shared during design review workshops before finally the process of painting the panels that make up the mural took place. The installation itself took five days.

Museum president Erika S. Floreska said, "We asked people to share their thoughts on what community means to them

and that's what we wanted the mural to convey. We're incredibly happy with the results of this collaborative community effort."

The unveiling event was attended by local officials including Congressman Anthony D'Esposito (4th CD) along with NYS Assemblyman Edward P. Ra; Nassau County Legislator Thomas McKevitt, Town of North

Hempstead Supervisor Jennifer DeSena and Michael Reinhart, Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation and Museums.

The public art piece is part of LICM's Community Voices Take Shape grant supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional support from Robert & Toni Bader Charitable Foundation.

My 2024 Midyear Review: A Checklist for Success

As we approach the midpoint of 2024, it’s a great time to conduct a review of your business goals. This process allows you to reflect on your achievements, identify areas for improvement, and realign your strategies to give you the best chance for a strong finish to the year. Here’s a five-step checklist to guide you through a midyear review:

1. Financial Check Up

• Review Income Statements and Balance Sheets:

Compare your actual revenue and expenses against your projections. Were you on target or are there big differences between what you thought would happen at the beginning of the year and what happened? If there are significant differences, understand the reasons behind them.

• Cash Flow Analysis: Make sure you have enough cash flow to cover your expenses for the rest of the year. Look at money coming in vs. money going out and make any adjustments to avoid having negative cash flow.

• Budget Review: Adjust your budget based on the first half’s results. What worked and what didn’t work in your business? Don’t be afraid to cut back in areas that are underperforming.

2. Measure Your Work

• Sales: What were your top-selling products or services through June? Were there any surprises—good or bad? Now is the time to make changes to your plans for the second half to give you the best shot at hitting your numbers at the end of the year.

• Customer Feedback: What are your customers saying about you, and your business? Are they happy? What changes do they want to see in your business? What do they say about your competitors? The more you know about your customers, the better you can service their needs.

• Employee Performance: How did your employees do for the first six months of 2024? Any surprises there? What do they need to succeed in the second half of the year? Do you need to address any complaints or make changes?

3. Run Your Business

• Review Your Work: How can you run your business more efficiently and productively? Are there areas that eat up money? Review your work week and ask this question, “How can I do this more efficiently?”

• Tech Review: Are there areas of your business that could use a technology upgrade? Have you looked at the different ways AI (artificial intelligence) can make your business more productive? Today, tools like ChatGPT can reduce the time you spend on marketing and operations by 80-90%.

• Inventory Management: Review your inventory.

Make sure you have the right amount of stock to meet demand without overstocking, which ties up your money.

4. Marketing and Sales Strategy

• Marketing Plan Review: How are you measuring the return on your marketing budget? Which social media channels are working? Which channels should you drop because your customers don’t use them anymore? Where are your competitors spending their money and how can you beat them at marketing?

• New Customers: Where are your new customers coming from? Is it referrals? A special promotion? A new product or service in your business? Ask your new customers how they came to you and why they chose your business. The more you know, the better you can target more customers like your new customers.

• Online Presence: Are all your social media accounts up to date? Is any information or website links broken or outdated? Maybe add new photos and update your content to give everything a fresh look.

5. 2024 Goals

• 12/31/24: This is the date that matters. All the work above comes down to this—Are you going to hit the end of the year goals you set for your business this year?

• Adjust Plans: Based on your answer, adjust your business plan to put your company in the best possible position to finish the year on a strong note—and hit your goals for 2024!

Mercy Soup Kitchen Seeking Volunteers

It is an exciting time at the Mercy Soup Kitchen of Wyandanch as it is preparing to launch its new and expanded post Covid operation.

Located in the basement of Trinity Lutheran Church at 17 South 20th Street, the Kitchen served its first meal to hungry people in 1980 and currently serves an average of 108 people per day.

During the pandemic, however, Kitchen procedures had to be modified in order to provide hot, nourishing meals safely and continuously to those in need. Indoor sit-down dining was discontinued and only take-out dining was available.

But today the Kitchen is posing for a postCovid reopening – a reorganizational rebirth of sorts – where Kitchen procedures can finally return to again offering guests dignified, indoor sit-down dining.

The Kitchen relies heavily on its generous volunteer support and, as such, numerous on-site and offsite volunteer opportunities are now available.

While there are openings for on-site positions, such as helping to prepare and serve meals and to perform various maintenance functions, there are also openings for diverse off-site positions in areas such as finance, grant development and preparation, legal compliance assurance, marketing duties, social media facilitation and fund raising/donation coordination.

Only with the efforts of its volunteers can the Kitchen succeed in its mission to provide food security to those in need. Please consider sharing some of your time and talents with the Kitchen to make this happen. We invite you to join our team.

A Carnival-Themed Night Of Fun

A CARNIVAL-THEMED NIGHT OF FUN - English as a New Language students at Deer Park’s John Quincy Adams Primary School had a great time at the school’s annual ENL Family Night on May 17. This year’s event featured a carnival theme, and the night was filled with games, dancing, art and crafts, raffles and fun. “We had a wonderful turnout and hope that the students enjoyed time with their peers, friends and families,” teacher Maria Cacoperdo said. “The JQA ENL teachers look forward to this event every year.” Photos courtesy of Deer Park School District

Memorable Ways To Celebrate Dad This Father’s Day

Dads do a lot for their families, and Father’s Day is the perfect time to acknowledge those efforts. The days when dads would receive a colorful necktie for Father’s Day are largely (and, for fathers,

thankfully) a relic of the past. Modern Father’s Day celebrations tend to involve more careful planning, and the following are some ways to make this year’s day for dads one to remember.

• Take Dad on a tour through his own history. The popularity of genealogy has skyrocketed over the last decade-plus, as various firms have made it easier than ever for individuals

to trace their family histories. If Dad counts himself among the millions across the globe interested in their family histories, moms and kids can work together to create a virtual tour through that history. Present the history as a printed book or as a video, sharing interesting things you learned about Dad’s ancestors but also highlighting key moments in his life. This presentation can be accompanied by a subscription to a genealogy service and a tour of some of Dad’s childhood haunts before the family enjoys brunch or dinner in the neighborhood where Dad grew up.

• Take to the great outdoors. Father’s Day is celebrated in midJune, making the day a perfect time to enjoy the great outdoors (weather permitting). Plan a day

around Dad’s favorite outdoor activity. If Dad is an avid fisherman, book a family outing on a charter boat so Dad can focus on catching fish and not navigating. If Dad loves being in natural settings, camp out the night before Father’s Day so he can wake up to the sound of birds chirping in the crisp morning air. If Dad has a favorite baseball team, take him out to the ballgame so he can soak up some Father’s Day sun.

• Book a private chef. If Dad has a fascination with food, perhaps nothing can make Father’s Day more memorable than a delicious meal served by a private chef. Private chefs will do all the work, giving moms and kids more time to spend with Dad throughout the day, and then the whole family can enjoy a special meal made by

someone whose specialty is crafting delicious dinners. Offerings vary, but many private chefs handle all the cooking and cleaning. Identify Dad’s favorite dish and then look for a chef who specializes in that type of cuisine.

• Appeal to Dad’s inner adventurer. Some Dads may just want to relax on Father’s Day, while others may prefer a more adventurous celebration. If Dad falls into the latter group, book a fun and adventurous activity the whole family can enjoy together. A kayaking trip, a skydiving session, a round of paintball, or even tickets to a rock concert on Father’s Day weekend can connect Dad with his inner adventurer. There’s no shortage of ways for families to make this Father’s Day one Dad won’t soon forget.

100 Years Ago This Month: Historical Events From June 2024

The month of June has been home to many historical events over the years. Here’s a look at some that helped to shape the world in June 1924.

• Austrian Chancellor Ignaz Seipel is shot by a disgruntled worker on June 1. Seipel survives after a bullet is extracted from his lung.

• The Chicago radio station WDAP is rechristened “WGN” on June 1 after it is purchased by the Chicago Tribune. The station’s new moniker refers to the newspaper’s slogan, “World’s Greatest Newspaper.” Both the WGN station and a television station of the same name continue to be operated out of Chicago today.

• The Indian Citizenship Act is signed into law on June 2 in the United States. The law recognizes all Native Americans who had been born in the United States or its territories as U.S. citizens.

• Influential novelist Franz Kafka dies in Austria on June 3. Kafka, only 40 at the time of his death, suffered from laryngeal tuberculosis and died from starvation after eating became too painful. Kafka, now considered a literary giant of the twentieth century, was a relative unknown at the time of his death.

• The German Reichstag approves the Dawes Plan on June 6. The plan staggers German reparations payments that were mandated in the aftermath of World War I.

• The United States enacts the Clarke-

McNary Act on June 7. The act facilitates the purchase of land to expand the country’s National Forest System.

• Geologist and mountaineer Noel Odell watches British mountain climbers George Mallory and Andrew Irvine ascend from their base camp at Mount Everest on June 8. Mallory and Irvine are never again seen alive, and no trace of either man is discovered until 1999, when Mallory’s body is discovered at an altitude of more than 26,000 feet.

• Ecuador extends the right to vote to women on June 9, becoming the first country in South America to do so.

• The Newton Gang carries out the largest train robbery in American history on June 12. The gang makes off with more than $3 million (the equivalent of roughly $54 million in 2024) after stopping mail train number 57 near Rondout, Illinois.

• The International Football Association Board legalizes the scoring of a goal by corner kick on June 14.

• On June 16, Italian Fascist politician Cesare Rossi surrenders to police in connection with the kidnapping of socialist and Italian Chamber of Deputies member Giacomo Matteoti earlier in the month. Matteoti’s body is ultimately found in August and signs suggest he was beaten to death. Though Rossi ultimately serves ample prison time for anti-fascist activities,

he is not arrested for his involvement in Matteotti’s murder until 1947.

• The Grand National Assembly of Turkey passes the Surname Act on June 21. The act requires every Turkish citizen to have a surname.

• Fritz Haarmann is arrested in Hanover, Germany, on June 23. Prior to his arrest, Haarmann was seen stalking boys, and a subsequent search of his apartment uncovers evidence that Haarmann is a serial killer. Sometimes referred to as the “Butcher of Hanover,” Haarmann is ultimately found guilty of murdering 24 young men and boys and is executed by guillotine in April 1925.

• Publisher William Randolph Hearst launches the New York Daily Mirror on June 24. Hearst launches the paper to compete against the New York Daily News.

• Brothers Jesse Barnes of the Boston Braves and Virgil Barnes of the New York Giants toe the rubber against one another on June 26. The game marks the first pitching matchup between brothers in Major League Baseball history.

• American President Calvin Coolidge’s 16-year-old son, Calvin, Jr., plays tennis on the White House tennis court on June 30. The president’s son plays wearing tennis shoes but no socks and develops a blister on his toe that develops into sepsis. The younger Coolidge passes away on July 7.

Cheese Is The Focus Of Classic Comfort Dish

Much like bacon, cheese makes many meals more flavorful. When cheese is the centerpiece of a dish, cheese lovers know it will be tasty and potentially even a little addictive. Such is the case with macaroni and cheese. Many people have a go-to mac and cheese recipe in their culinary repertoire that they pull out anytime they desire some cheesy goodness. For those looking for a new mac and cheese recipe, “Crusty Mac and Cheese” from “Virgil’s Barbecue Road Trip Cookbook” (St. Martin’s Press) by Neal Corman is comfort food at its finest. This version has a little spiciness for an added flavor kick.

Crusty Mac and Cheese

Serves 4-6

1 pound elbow macaroni

1⁄2 teaspoon kosher salt

1⁄8 teaspoon ground white pepper

1⁄2 cup chicken stock

3⁄4 cup heavy cream

1⁄2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1⁄2 tablespoon hot sauce

1⁄2 tablespoon Creole mustard

11⁄4 cup Cheese Wiz®

8 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

Directions:

1. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Grease a 2-quart baking dish.

2. Boil the macaroni in a 2-quart saucepan filled the water, until it is al dente, or still has some snap when you bite it. Strain the pasta and rinse thoroughly with cold water. Set aside.

3. Combine the remaining ingredients, except for the shredded cheese, in a medium saucepan over medium heat. The mixture should be barely simmering. Whisk periodically. Cook for 7 to 10 minutes.

4. In a large mixing bowl, combine the cheese sauce with the pasta and about one-third of the shredded cheese. Transfer to the baking dish, covering with the remaining shredded cheese, and bake covered for 10 minutes.

5. Uncover and bake for 15 minutes more, or until the top is golden brown.

A Summertime Staple

Peaches are a summertime staple. This sweet fruit is at home in desserts, salads, on top of cereals, and all on its own. Peaches thrive in warm climates with lots of sunlight. Peaches are native to northwest China, and they are believed to have been domesticated and cultivated since 2000 B.C. Later, they were widely grown in the region known as Persia, which is now called Iran. As a result, the scientific name for the peach species is Prunus persica. China continues to be the world’s largest peach producer, followed by Spain, Italy, Greece, and the United States. In the United States, even though Georgia is known as “The Peach State,” it is not the country’s biggest producer of peaches. Georgia is beat out by California and South Carolina. New Jersey also produces its fair share of peaches. Nectarines and peaches are similar fruits. In fact, nectarines are a type of peach. Peaches have a dominant allele for the fuzzy skin, while nectarines have a recessive allele for that fuzz. In regard to flavor, peaches and nectarines are very similar, but some experts say nectarines are slightly sweeter and firmer. According to the College of Food, Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, nectarines also have considerably more potassium and twice as much vitamin A as peaches.

Spring is a time of year when change is in the air. Trees are budding, plants are flowering, and homes laden with dark or heavy fabrics and clutter could use some lightening up.

Spring Cleaning Tips And Tricks

Spring cleaning projects are popular this time of year as residents take inventory of their living spaces and aim to declutter, clean and increase efficiency. Some people find the prospect of getting

organized overwhelming. Here are some tips that can help anyone master spring cleaning.

• Create a plan. Make a checklist and establish a

cleaning plan of attack. Focus on areas that are not regularly cleaned, as they probably need a little attention.

• Assemble your cleaning kit. Spring cleaning can be slowed down considerably if you don’t have all of your equipment at the ready. Items to have on hand include an all-purpose cleaner, concentrated cleaner, microfiber cloths, paper towels, mop, vacuum, dusters, and a squeegee. Adjust your equipment based on the task at hand.

• Curate your cleaning playlist. Create a playlist with songs that will get you moving and motivated to clean.

• Work from top to bottom.

Work efficiently by cleaning shelves, ceiling fans and other elevated items first, as dust and debris will trickle down and need to be cleaned next.

• Purchase or rent a carpet cleaner. According to the experts at Clean That Up, carpets help filter indoor air by trapping debris and allergens. By deep cleaning carpets, homeowners can improve the indoor air quality of their homes. Use a carpet cleaner on a warm, dry day so that windows can be opened and cross breezes will help dry the damp rug.

• Clean windows. Wash windows inside and out and utilize their screens to help brighten indoors spaces.

• Deep clean the kitchen. Clean out and disinfect the refrigerator by wiping it down with warm water and baking soda or a vinegarand-water solution. While in the kitchen, set the oven to the self-clean function so it becomes cleaner as well.

Homeowners also can focus on cleaning curtains (including shower curtains), steam-cleaning upholstery, removing clutter from closets, cleaning out the dryer vent and duct tubing, wiping inside kitchen drawers, and vacuuming under beds and other furniture.

Spring cleaning can bring the revitalizing nature of this beloved time of year into your home.
