New York Adopts Legislation To Fight Organized Shop Thefts; Protect Workers

Senator Martinez Celebrates New Laws To Lockdown Retail Rip-Offs

New York has enacted sweeping legislation that protects retail workers and businesses from the consequences of organized retail theft. These changes were advocated by Governor Kathy Hochul and supported by State Senator Monica R. Martinez. The package of protections included in the recently adopted FY25 State Budget:

• enhance penalties for assaults on retail workers, upgrading the offense from a misdemeanor to a felony. Under the new law, individuals inflicting physical harm on retail workers during the course of their duties will face felony charges.

• enable prosecutors to consolidate the value of stolen goods when pursuing larceny charges, allowing for

the aggregation of retail items from various stores. This provision aims to establish a higher larceny threshold for crimes committed under the same criminal scheme.

• criminalize the facilitation of the sale of stolen goods by thirdparty sellers, holding individuals accountable if they utilize any online platform or physical venue to sell stolen merchandise.

Freshman Wins Countywide PSA Competition

FRESHMAN WINS COUNTYWIDE PSA COMPETITION - Deer Park High School business students in Jill Perry-Eising’s Multimedia Business Applications class recently entered the Suffolk County Community College Radio and TV High School Media Competition in the 60-second public service announcement category, with freshman Kaylee Puterbaugh being named the winner for her PSA video on suicide prevention awareness. For the competition, Puterbaugh researched the topic of suicide prevention, wrote the script, created a storyboard, filmed the video and then edited it using Final Cut Pro X. Photo courtesy of Deer Park School District

• $40.2 million for specialized Retail Theft Teams within State Police, District Attorneys’ offices, and local law enforcement, with an additional 100 New York State Police personnel assigned specifically to combat organized retail theft.

• a $5 million tax credit to assist small businesses in enhancing security measures, such as installing cameras. Additionally, the Budget establishes a $3,000 tax credit for small businesses that meet the spending threshold on retail theft prevention measures, aiming to alleviate financial burdens on these businesses.

“From economic losses for businesses to higher costs paid by consumers, organized retail theft is robbing all New Yorkers,” said Senator Martinez. “Through these comprehensive measures, we not only send a clear message that such criminal activity will not be tolerated, but also protect the safety and livelihoods of our retail workers and businesses.”

1 tablespoon vinegar

2 tablespoons yellow mustard

arm weather beckons people outdoors. Al fresco dining offers a chance to spend even more time outdoors, and many people will attest that no outdoor gathering is complete without the requisite grilled fare and complementary sides that are staples of spring and summer dining. Potato salad is one such food that turns up regularly this time of year in many shapes and forms. Traditional potato salad is delicious, but it may not be so great for health-conscious individuals, as it’s typically swimming in mayonnaise. A lighter version featuring Greek yogurt in the dressing is ideal for those who want to eat healthy. Greek yogurt also adds gut-healthy live active cultures to the recipe, which may provide gastrointestinal benefits. Enjoy this recipe for “Greek Yogurt Potato Salad” courtesy of The Diabetes Council and Pitchfork Foodie Farms.

Directions:

1. Peel and dice potatoes and onions. Put them and a teaspoon of salt in a pressure cooker and cover with an inch of water. Close valve. Set pressure cooker to high pressure. Set timer for 5 minutes, cook and quick release when it’s done. Drain potatoes. Cool until just warm. (If you don’t have a pressure cooker, boil potatoes in a pot of water on the stove until tender.)

2. Set eggs on a rack in the pressure cooker. Add 1/2 inch of water. Close valve, set to high pressure for 5 minutes. Cook for 5 minutes, quick release, and leave lid closed for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, take lid off. Drain eggs and cover with ice water to stop the cooking process. Let sit in ice water bath for about 5 minutes, then peel eggs. (If you don’t have a pressure cooker, hard-boil eggs according to your favorite recipe.)

3. Add Greek yogurt, sour cream, mustard, vinegar, salt, pepper, celery seed, and dill weed to a large mixing bowl. Stir until smooth. You can taste test to see if you need to add ingredients.

4. Add cooled, diced potatoes, pickles and hard-boiled eggs. Gently stir until potatoes are coated with dressing. Adjust seasonings to taste. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

Notes: Yukon Gold or red potatoes hold their shape best in potato salad. White distilled vinegar is classic in potato salad, but you also can use cider vinegar, white wine vinegar or even lemon juice.

Empire State Development Announces Completion Of Pal-O-Mine Equestrian’s $3 Million Expansion On Long Island

Empire State Development (ESD) recently announced the completion of Pal-O-Mine Equestrian’s $3 million facility expansion in Islandia. Pal-O-Mine is a non-profit organization that utilizes therapeutic equine programs to promote growth, learning, and healing for children and adults with disabilities.

Supported by a $600,000 capital grant from Empire State Development, recommended by the Long Island Regional Economic Development Council, the expansion will boost its capacity for job training, workforce preparedness, and internship programs. These services will provide crucial skills and support that empowers these individuals to overcome employment barriers and achieve greater independence and success in their lives.

Empire State Development President CEO and Commissioner Hope Knight said, “Pal-OMine’s expansion is more than just an infrastructure upgrade; it’s a catalyst for change that empowers our most vulnerable citizens to lead fulfilling lives and contribute to a more inclusive economy. By investing in innovative programs that deliver essential vocational training and support services, we are unlocking the potential of these individuals and fortifying the social and economic fabric of our society.”

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian Founder & CEO Lisa Gatti said, “We are immensely grateful to Empire State Development and the Long Island Economic Development Council for supporting our work. The ESD grant allows Pal-OMine the space to continue to empower, educate and enrich the most underserved communities and most importantly provide experiences to those individuals who

desire to learn viable job skills. Working with our horses instills a newfound sense of confidence and self-worth, which serves as a foundation for their personal and professional growth journey.”

Since its inception in 1995, Pal-O-Mine has been at the forefront of using horses to facilitate growth, learning, and healing, serving over 400 individuals weekly. The programs offer personalized support and training to high-risk youth and adults with disabilities, aiming to increase participants’ independence, community integration, and economic security. The expansion has transformed the facility, creating nearly 5,000 square feet of enhanced space to better serve its participants. The project involved the renovation of two existing structures to ensure ADA compliance, accessibility, and safety for all individuals. Additionally, a new 2,000-square-foot prefabricated building has been constructed, providing much-needed space for expanded programming and services.

The acquisition of new equipment has enhanced the center’s capacity to deliver equine-assisted therapy services, workforce training, and internship programs. By combining classroom learning with hands-on experience on the farm, participants develop a broad range of vocational and life skills. Through partnerships with local businesses and organizations, the Farm facilitates internships, apprenticeships, and job placement opportunities for program participants. The expansion and enhancement of these initiatives helps equip students with the tools and support necessary to overcome obstacles and achieve success in the workforce and beyond.

equine services to our residents who are in need, including our veterans. With Suffolk County being home to the largest veterans’ population in the state, we are grateful for the various initiatives the organization provides to our hometown heroes who are experiencing emotional or physical trauma. I applaud our partners for coming together to complete this expansion project, which will further empower our residents,” said Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine.

“We are grateful to Empire State Development, and the Governor, for investing in the important work that Pal-O-Mine Equestrian does to benefit those with special needs, veterans, and others throughout our Islip community. Equine therapy offers tremendous mental health benefits, and we are so happy they will be able to expand this important program,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

When an offer that is Too Good To Be Believed is 100% believable

The cost of insurance premiums are rising. The cost to replace Homes and Autos is skyrocketing due to inflation, shortages, and increased risks. Yet, the cost of Renter insurance is not rising as quickly. The risk to insurers is not as great. What’s more, a Renter policy may be net free to car owners.

and

Many Property & Casualty insurers offer discounts for bundling products. The discount on an Auto policy may well offset the cost of a Renter policy. If a renter

didn’t think they needed the coverage, they should want it.

A Renter’s policy may offer coverage that protects the insured in three (3) critical ways:

· It protects possessions against loss due to fire or theft

· It protects from lawsuit if someone is injured while in the apartment

· It provides temporary housing if ever forced from the residence due to a covered claim….like a fire. Have a car and rent your apartment, call your insurance agent for a bundled quote.

Benefits Of Leisure Activities

Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problemsolving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

College And Career Week Connects Students With Opportunities

COLLEGE AND CAREER WEEK - Deer Park High School’s 2024 College and Career Week was designed to connect students with college and career opportunities and information to better prepare them for life after graduation. The event featured a daily mini College and Career Fair in the gym with over 20 representatives, along with workshops on topics such as college searches, college essays, interviewing skills, marketing analytics, studying medicine, resume building, letters of recommendation, and NCAA and SUNY information. College and Career Week concluded with a Decision Day celebration in the main lobby, with seniors enjoying snacks, taking photos and adding their names and colleges/careers to a decision tree. “This is an excellent chance for senior citizens to get the assistance and information they need by connecting with the County’s senior advocates right in their own communities,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I hope all those interested in the services that the Suffolk County Office for the Aging provides will take advantage of this opportunity.”

Students “Make A Difference” With Visit To Sunrise Seniors

STUDENTS “MAKE A DIFFERENCE” - Students from the Let’s Make a Difference Club at Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate School visited the Sunrise Senior Living facility in Dix Hills to bring some joy to the elderly residents. They read to the seniors, performed their musical talents and helped them to make a cute spring craft. “The seniors were thrilled to spend the afternoon with the students, and the kids enjoyed talking to the seniors as well,” teacher Jacqueline Amato said. “This was our last event for 2024, and the kids have definitely ‘made a difference” this year!”

Weather Warnings And Watches

Weather is hard to predict. Meteorologists have many tools at their disposal to help forecast storms and other phenomena, but it is impossible to predict the weather with 100 percent accuracy.

When the weather takes a turn for the worse, the National Weather Service may issue certain notices to prepare the public. Understanding the level of threat a notice carries can help people take appropriate action and avoid serious consequences.

The NWS uses a fourtier system to alert the public of hazards. Here’s a closer look at what each tier constitutes.

Outlook

This is the least serious weather alert. It usually means that hazardous weather may approach in the next three to seven days. The public should monitor the situation and stay tuned for further updates.

Advisory

With an advisory, weather conditions are not overly serious but could prove inconvenient. Individuals should be cautious and prudent when preparing supplies or traveling.

Watch

During a weather watch, there is an increased risk of a hazardous weather occurrence, though the timing or location is still uncertain. This is when it is essential to practice an evacuation or preparedness plan and stock up on any lastminute supplies.

Warning

The most serious of the weather impact notifications, a warning constitutes an imminent or likely event. The weather may cause a threat to property or life. Immediate action to stay safe is necessary. While these alerts are based on the severity of impending weather, it is important to note that the NWS will not necessarily follow the same timeline with issuing alerts. That depends on how fast a weather situation develops. If there is time, an advisory, then a watch and then a warning may be issued. However, if a storm moves in rapidly, only a warning may be issued. People always should pay attention to weather notices so they can be prepared should severe weather be in the forecast.

Some organizations partner with local businesses and receive a portion of the proceeds participating establishments earn on certain days, while other organizations may cold call prospective donors during times of the year when giving to charity tends to increase, such as the holiday season. Activity-driven fundraisers are another popular way for nonprofit organizations to raise funds, and these endeavors can be highly effective.

What are activity-driven fundraisers?

Activity-driven fundraisers

focus on an engaging activity that encourages supporters to actively participate in an effort to raise funds. The Ice Bucket Challenge is one of the more notable activity-driven fundraisers in recent years. Participants in the challenge would pour a bucket of ice water over their heads or the head of another person, and then challenge or nominate another person to follow suit. Participants also would urge donations to support research into amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, an incurable motor neuron disease also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Additional examples

NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS SERVICE DIRECTORY

of activity-driven fundraisers are runs and walks in which participants solicit donations from supporters that increase with each mile they walk or run. The American Cancer Society’s Breast Cancer Awareness 5K walk and fun run is one popular activity-driven fundraiser that annually attracts sizable numbers of participants and donors.

Are activity-driven fundraisers effective?

The sheer volume of activity-driven fundraisers makes it more difficult to gauge the success of these events. However, a recent study from researchers at

Carnegie Mellon University found that people are inclined to contribute more when the experience is painful and labor-intensive. That suggests that activitydriven fundraisers like charity runs can be highly effective and lucrative ways to raise money. Indeed, various estimates suggest the Ice Bucket Challenge raised more than $220 million worldwide.

Nonprofit organizations raise funds in myriad ways. Activity-driven fundraisers are among the more engaging, and often successful, ways to raise money for a good cause.

PSEG Long Island Employees Make Donation To Help Protect Power Lines, Wildlife And The Environment From Balloon Hazards

PSEG Long Island employees recently donated $1,000 to Merrick-based Balloon Mission, Inc. a notfor-profit organization that collects discarded balloons in an effort to protect wildlife and the environment.

Balloon safety is important to PSEG Long Island because metallic balloons can be hazardous to overhead electric lines – potentially causing fires and power outages, and also because of the negative effects released balloons can have on the ecosystem.

The donation was made through three of the company’s employee business resource groups (EBRG): GREEN, which is comprised of employeeadvocates of clean energy alternatives, LI Environmental Guardians, which supports local efforts to help preserve the earth, and the Able EBRG, which champions community

organizations that help people with disabilities.

The Association for Children with Down Syndrome (ACDS), which serves families of children and adults with disabilities, has been involved with Balloon Mission’s work. Adults receiving services from ACDS help Balloon Mission by collecting deflated balloons from various balloon drop box locations. The group then practices life skills by sorting and counting the balloons before they are safely and properly discarded.

Balloon Mission will use the PSEG Long Island donation to educate the public through community outreach and balloon collection programs, and by erecting informational signage at area parks and beaches about the dangers of balloon releases.

"We're so grateful for our partnership with PSEG

Long Island,” said Cynthia Seibold, founder and executive director of Balloon Mission, Inc. “This donation will help fund our recycling and education programs that raise awareness about the unintended harm balloons have when they're accidentally or purposely let go in the sky. We're pioneering a balloon collection program so people can responsibly enjoy balloons. Once the fun is done, they pop-n-drop balloons in our bins knowing they're keeping animals and the environment safe, while reducing the risk of fires and power outages."

“We are supporting this wonderful organization that is raising awareness about the potential dangers balloons can have on our environment,” said Anna Keselman, co-president of the PSEG Long Island GREEN EBRG. “We are inspired by Cynthia’s

enthusiasm and her organization’s mission to protect turtles, sea life and our lands.”

PSEG Long Island reminds the public that balloons released into the air can become entangled in

overhead electric equipment and cause a host of problems.

Metallic balloons conduct electricity and resting on an electric line or other electrical equipment could lead to power outages, fire and, possibly, injuries.

Balloons caught on electrical equipment should be reported to PSEG Long Island at 800-490-0075 so a specially trained crew can safely address the issue.

Summer is a great time to enjoy recreational activities that take advantage of the great outdoors. This year summer arrives on June 20 with the summer solstice, which features the most hours of daylight of any day for the entire year. Celebrants who want to usher in another summer of fun in the sun can embrace these ideas for commemorating the start of summer.

• Watch the sunrise. Get up early and watch the sun come up on the longest day of the year. Then be sure to catch the sunset to enjoy every minute of daylight.

• Host a cookout. Memorial Day, Canada Day and Independence Day get most of the barbecue glory this time of year. But there’s nothing that says the first day of summer shouldn’t be a reason to

Fun Ways To Celebrate The Summer Solstice

gather friends and family for a cookout. June 20 falls on a Thursday this year, so the solstice provides the perfect excuse to take a four-day weekend and celebrate the official arrival of summer.

• Light a campfire. Traditional Mid-summer’s Eve/summer solstice celebrations featured bonfires. Hold on to the tradition by gathering people around a campfire or backyard firepit. S’mores make the perfect complement to a campfire scene.

• Grab some ice cream. Cool off on the summer solstice by visiting a nearby ice cream shop and indulge in a sundae or triple-decker cone.

• Go on a nature hike. Enjoy the great outdoors with a relaxing hike through a park or nature trail.

• Participate in a beach clean-up. Make a beach trip even more enjoyable by signing up for a cleanup to clear the sand of litter. Organize an impromptu beach cleanup session either solo or with some like-minded friends.

• Pick fresh fruit. Many berries come into season in the summer. Head to a nearby pick-your-own farm and grab fresh fruit to enjoy right away or utilize your pickings in recipes.

• Plant a flower garden. Clean up garden beds or go to the nursery and grab some colorful annuals to spruce up areas around the yard.

The summer solstice is an opportunity to celebrate the arrival of summer and all the fun that comes with it.

Gift Ideas For Graduates

The class of 2024 soon will be donning their caps and gowns and receiving their diplomas. After commencement ceremonies, graduation parties will soon follow.

For party guests, that means finding the right gifts for grads. Some high school graduates will continue their studies at colleges and universities. Others may pursue careers in various trades.

Still, some graduates may be ready to enter the workforce right away. No matter the direction, these gifts can treat graduates to something special.

Streaming TV device

While it's certainly possible to watch favorite shows or films on mobile devices, viewing is that much clearer on televisions. Rather than graduates having to invest in cable television wherever they go, streaming devices like AppleTV or Roku are portable, which means they can be used at home, in a dorm room or on vacation.

Secured credit card

Individuals typically are eligible to apply for credit cards once they reach age 18, which is the age most students are when they graduate high school. Credit cards are one method of establishing solid credit, so it can be beneficial for a teen to have one. But it can be challenging for individuals with no credit histories to get approval. A secured card, according to CapitalOne, is a credit card that requires money

deposited with the credit card issuer in order to open the account. This security deposit is held by the issuer as long as the account is open. Often the security deposit is the same as the credit limit. Gift-givers can help establish secured cards for grads by providing the funds for the security deposits.

Framed memorabilia

Whether a graduate was a star athlete or a premier member of the marching band, gift-givers can provide special memories of time spent in school. Frame ticket stubs, sports jerseys, show programs, or other memorabilia that commemorates a graduate's glory days at their alma mater.

Travel accessories

Graduates may want to go on a trip before they take the next step in their lives. Quality travel gear is a worthy investment. Select luggage that won’t

exceed airport carry-on limits so grads can cut the baggage check lines when they dart away to locales near or far. Carryon bags also fit easily in bus cargo areas or in the trunks of cars. Pair the gifts with standard or digital luggage tags.

Wireless earbuds or headphones

Upgrade grads’ audio with the newest wireless earbuds or headphones. This way they can take them to the gym or use them to listen to shows or music while sharing spaces with others, including college roommates.

Smartphone wallet case

Teenagers are seldom without their phones. A smartphone wallet case enables graduates to stash IDs, credit or debit cards and some cash into specially designed pockets built into the phone cases. This keeps all essentials in one spot.

HOME & GARDEN

Painting Vinyl Siding?

Vinyl siding is not something that many homeowners consider painting, but it can be done. However, some contractors may not recommend it as the best option to overhaul a home. Painting siding means it will only be as durable as the paint used. It’s also essential to determine if painting vinyl will void warranties. Wood or engineered wood or fiber cement siding tend to be better options than vinyl should you want to switch colors down the line. Vinyl siding can be painted if it is done right, and it can be an affordable way to change the look of a home without investing in new siding. According to Benjamin Moore

Paints, vinyl siding that will be painted will need to be cleaned thoroughly, including the removal of any mildew, chalk or dirt, to enhance paint adhesion. Pitted or porous vinyl siding always must be primed, but others may not require priming. Choose an exterior paint designed for painting on vinyl. Two coats of paint are recommended.

According to BobVila.com, paint for vinyl has acrylic and urethane resins that accommodate the expansion and contraction of vinyl and help the paint stick. Also, for the best results, the home improvement experts on the site advise painting when temperatures are mild and there is low relative humidity and an overcast sky.

Deep breathing exercises can help individuals maintain personal health and well-being. According to the American Institute of Stress, 20 to 30 minutes per day of “belly breathing,” also known as abdominal breathing or diaphragmatic breathing, can reduce stress and anxiety. The American

Sleep Association reports that focusing on breath might be able to help induce sleep for people struggling to fall asleep. In addition to helping reduce stress and promote relaxation, breathing techniques are useful during labor to focus and release tension. Individuals with COPD often find it

difficult to breathe, which can compound anxiety and make it even harder to breathe. But the COPD Foundation notes that two different breathing techniques can help an individual take in air without working hard: abdominal breathing and pursed-lips breathing.
