and 60 years as the congregational spiritual leader of Suffolk Jewish Center, as he expanded the synagogue, established meaningful educational programs and promoted community compassion and advocacy. Remarks were given by elected officials and leaders on the state, county and local levels.

Rabbi Maza led the creation of the Suffolk County Task Force on Anti-Semitism, which significantly decreased antisemitic crimes in Suffolk County through collaborative efforts with clergy, law enforcement and media. His role on the Special Advisory Committee on the New York State Senate Task Force on Vandalism, Religious Desecration and Bigotry directly led to the enactment of hate crime legislation and national statutes. Rabbi Maza also enhanced education on the Holocaust and minority contributions, as well as the restoration of desecrated sacred scrolls to their rightful places, in his work on the New York State Advisory Committee on Bigotry in Textbooks, Congressman’s Committee on Education and Programs on the Holocaust and Israel and the New York Police Commissioner’s Committee on the Identification of Torahs. His inspiring work was furthered during his service as the President of the Suffolk Board of Rabbis, President of the Long Island Board of Rabbis, as a member of the Board of Governors of the New York Board of Rabbis, the Deer Park Clergy Council, and as Chaplain of the Deer Park Fire Department.

Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly Honors Rosaria Luppy Of Deer Park As His 2024 Woman Of Distinction

Rosaria Luppy, a resident of Deer Park who generously volunteers her time in the community, has been selected by Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) as his District 17 Woman of Distinction for 2024.

Legislator Donnelly honored Ms. Luppy during the annual Suffolk County Women of Distinction luncheon, held this year at the H. Lee Dennison Building in Hauppauge on May 7, where he detailed her compassion and selflessness and presented her with a County Proclamation. They were joined by her twin daughters, Giovanna and Arianna, students at Deer Park High School.

A community leader known for her extensive volunteer work, philanthropic initiatives and advocacy, Ms. Luppy is active with the Deer Park Columbiettes, the women’s organization affiliated with the Knights of Columbus, Our Lady of the Rosary Council and her parish, Ss. Cyril & Methodius Roman Catholic Church. As a

result of her initiative and under her direction, the Columbiettes created 435 handmade “Sock Cupcakes” during the holiday season that were hand delivered to local nursing homes and spread joy and warmth to residents.

Seven years ago, Ms. Luppy founded the Deer Park Juniors, a volunteer group that engages local youth to help and give back to the community through activities that include cleanups, assisting the elderly and supporting healthcare workers during the pandemic. She initiated numerous other impactful projects, including dedicating a Tiny Library in memory of fallen police officers, providing essential items to the homeless, donating gloves and hats to the Veteran’s Administration hospital and sending care packages and cards to military personnel stationed abroad.

“Ms. Luppy is a vibrant important member of the Deer Park community who is passionate about helping others. Her desire and

dedication to doing good through giving back is both astonishing and inspiring,” said Legislator Donnelly. “It was a privilege to select and honor her as my Woman of Distinction for 2024 and, on behalf of the entire community, thank her for all that she does.”

The Suffolk County Woman of Distinction Recognition Program was established in 2002 to give each County Legislator the opportunity to honor an outstanding woman who resides in his or her legislative district and has demonstrated leadership, involvement and commitment to community. Ms. Luppy and the names of the other 2024 honorees were read into the record at the May 7 Legislative General Meeting. Legislator Donnelly’s previous winners include Bonnie Rosen of Melville (2023), Valerie St. Bernard of Deer Park (2022), Lisa Karrer and Deborah Porretto of South Huntington (2021) and June Hunt Margolin of Huntington Station (2020).

Meet Deer Park’s 2024 Valedictorian And Salutatorian

Deer Park High School’s

Class of 2024 valedictorian and salutatorian are Jordan Trojan and Calvin Nguyen, respectively.

Trojan, a National Merit Commended Scholar and AP Scholar with Distinction, serves as vice president of the Math Honor Society and treasurer of the Italian Honor Society and National English Honor Society, and is a member of the National Honor Society, Science

Honor Society and Tri-M Music Honor Society. He was named a Long Island Scholar of Mathematics and earned a perfect score on the AP Computer Science Principles exam.

An accomplished ScholarAthlete, he has competed on Deer Park’s varsity cross-country, spring track and winter tracks as well as the junior varsity soccer team. Trojan will attend Stony Brook University, majoring in mechanical

engineering and computer.

Nguyen, an AP Scholar with Distinction, serves as president of the Science Honor Society and vice president of the National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society, and is a member of the Math Honor Society and National English Honor Society. He is also a 2024 U.S. Presidential Scholar; New York State Seal of Biliteracy recipient for Spanish; National Spanish Examination silver medalist in 2021 and 2022; co-captain of the school’s Science Olympiad team; a member of the Academic Team, Math Team, DECA club and DECA Honor Society; coding leader of the STEM Club; DECA State Career Conference qualifier in 2023 and 2024 and DECA Suffolk County

Competition human resource management second-place winner; Deer Park’s representative at the 2024 Long Island BOCES Student Regional Forum; a 2021 Breakfast for Champions world language winner; and a member of the 2023 homecoming court. In athletics, after two years on the junior varsity boys soccer team, he earned a spot on the boys varsity soccer team in his junior and senior years, earning Academic All-County honors for the 20232024 season. Nguyen will attend Rochester Institute of Technology, studying through RIT’s combined bachelor/accelerated master’s program and majoring in software engineering and artificial intelligence.

Top 10 Seniors Recognized By Deer Park Board Of Education

The top 10 academically ranked students of Deer Park High School’s Class of 2024 were recognized at the district’s April 30 board of education meeting. With their proud families in attendance, guidance staff and administrators honored valedictorian Jordan Trojan, salutatorian Calvin Nguyen and the remaining top 10 ranked seniors: Eadie Liu (third), Kathy Lin (fourth), Stephanie Sheeler (fifth), Evan Attrino (sixth), Fatima Nawaz (seventh), Alexis Lazarte (eighth), Shirley Bhuiyan (ninth) and Kaliya Hull (10th).
