Mercy Soup Kitchen Seeking Volunteers

It is an exciting time at the Mercy Soup Kitchen of Wyandanch as it is preparing to launch its new and expanded post Covid operation.

Located in the basement of Trinity Lutheran Church at 17 South 20th Street, the Kitchen served its first meal to hungry people in 1980 and currently serves an average of 108 people per day.

During the pandemic, however, Kitchen procedures had to be modified in order to provide hot, nourishing meals safely and continuously to those in need. Indoor sit-down dining was discontinued and only take-out dining was available.

But today the Kitchen is posing for a postCovid reopening – a reorganizational rebirth of sorts – where Kitchen procedures can finally return to again offering guests dignified, indoor sit-down dining.

The Kitchen relies heavily on its generous volunteer support and, as such, numerous on-site and offsite volunteer opportunities are now available.

While there are openings for on-site positions, such as helping to prepare and serve meals and to perform various maintenance functions, there are also openings for diverse off-site positions in areas such as finance, grant development and preparation, legal compliance assurance, marketing duties, social media facilitation and fund raising/donation coordination.

Only with the efforts of its volunteers can the Kitchen succeed in its mission to provide food security to those in need. Please consider sharing some of your time and talents with the Kitchen to make this happen. We invite you to join our team.

Deer Park High School Honors 17 Dedicated And Determined Student Champions

As their proud families watched with pride, Deer Park High School recognized the achievements of 17 remarkable students at the annual spring Breakfast for Champions on April 17. The dedicated and determined students were honored by administrators and teachers in categories corresponding to school departments as well as principal’s and teacher’s awards. Held in the school’s library, the event featured music from a high school string quintet consisting of Jayme Lipiec (viola), Eadie Liu (violin), Liana Luc (violin), Lorelai Silverstein (bass) and John Susana-Mendez (cello).

Students were honored in the 15 school department categories of athletics (Sophie Joseph), business (Summer Eisenberg), English (Muntazir Mehdi), English as a new language

(Maria Tojin Uz), family and consumer science (Nadia Elsergany), fine arts (Kasumi Dennis), guidance (Anaelle Beauchamp), health (Ubaid Iqbal), mathematics (Louis DeAngelis), performing arts (Jaden Carbajal), physical education (Nathaniel Ciuffo), science (Daniel Aguilar), social studies (Sara Garcia), technology (Christopher Pittas) and world languages (Saamir Alfred), as well as the Principal’s Award (Dimaunte’ Gardner) and Teacher’s Award (Georgios Kagiannis-Juliano).

“The students seen here show exceptional conduct and character on a daily basis,” Associate Principal Garret Noblett said. “The stories that we will hear today recognize students for all of their achievement, hard work and accomplishments, and determination to overcome

May ‘Legislator At Your Library’ Community Outreach Program Dates And Locations

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) is pleased to announce that he will be holding his popular “Legislator at Your Library” Community Outreach Programs at the Brentwood, Deer Park, Half Hollow Hills (Dix Hills Branch) and South Huntington Public Libraries on Thursdays in May where he will be providing a range of services to residents free of charge.

At all events, interested community members can speak with Legislator Donnelly, receive Suffolk County Senior IDs and get documents notarized free of charge. He will be joined by the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office who will be providing Suffolk County Medical IDs. In addition, a “Shed the Meds” Safe Medication Disposal Box

will be available at the Deer Park, Brentwood and South Huntington programs. Medications can be placed in plastic bags, but if you are planning on bringing any in their original containers, it is strongly suggested you block out the names for anonymity.

The United States flag was first imagined after the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The Continental Congress authorized creation of the first national flag on June 14, 1777. It was decided that the flag should have 13 stripes, alternating red and white, to represent the original 13 colonies, and that the new union be represented by 13 white stars in a blue field to signify a “new constellation.” Francis Hopkinson, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, is most often credited with the original design.

Today there are 50 stars on the flag to represent the 50 states, while the 13 stripes still represent the 13 British colonies that became the first states. While this may be common knowledge, Public Law 94-344, known as the Federal Flag Code, may not be as widely known. The code dictates that the flag is to be treated with respect and proper etiquette. The code is extensive, but the following guidelines can help private individuals interested in displaying their flags to do so in accordance with the law.

· Flags should only be displayed in public from sunrise to sunset, unless the flag can be properly illuminated during darkness. In this instance, it may be displayed at all times.

· When displayed with other flags, such as on a single staff or lanyard, the U.S. flag should be above all other flags. If flags are displayed in a row, the U.S. flag goes to the observer’s left.

· State and local flags are traditionally flown lower than the American flag.

· During marching ceremonies or parades with other flags, the U.S. flag should be to the observer’s left.

· The flag should be displayed at every public institution and at schools during school days.

· When displayed vertically and not on a staff, the union should be on the left when observed. It should be suspended so its folds fall freely as though the flag were staffed.

· The flag should be hoisted briskly and lowered ceremoniously.

· The flag is often displayed at halfstaff on days of mourning, including Memorial Day. The flag should first be hoisted to the peak for an instant, then lowered to half-staff position, which is half the distance between the top and bottom of the staff.

· On a vehicle, the U.S. flag should be displayed from a staff firmly fixed to the chassis. It should not be draped over the hood, top, sides, or back of a vehicle.

· The flag should never touch anything beneath it, such as the ground, the floor, water, or merchandise. It also should never have anything placed on it.

· A flag in poor condition should be destroyed with dignity, preferably by burning. Most American Legion posts and local Boy Scouts troops will have the resources to retire flags accordingly. Many will host annual flag retirement ceremonies on Flag Day.

Hospital Association Offers $2,000 Scholarship

The Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC) announces a $2,000 scholarship for college juniors/seniors or post graduate students who are studying Journalism, Marketing/Communications, or Healthcare Administration. (The scholarship is not for clinicalbased study.) The Ann Marie Brown Memorial Scholarship honors the late Ann Marie Brown, who served as vice president for government and public relations for the Hospital Council from 1983 to 1993. The scholarship is administered by the Hospital Council’s Communications Committee. Filing deadline is June 14, 2024.
