Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer recently presented local students with scholarship prizes for their environmental science projects at the Town’s Annual Earth Day Celebration. Deer Park High School student Angelina Selkirk’s remarkable work of art, My Stars, was selected for the recent Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at the Heckscher Museum of Art Gallery Show. Selkirk was one of only 85 Long Island student-artists to be recognized, among more than 300 who submitted. In Long Island’s Best, a prestigious and comprehensive artsin-education program integrating Huntington’s Heckscher Museum and high school art classrooms in Nassau and Suffolk, school art teachers partner
with Heckscher Museum educators to help students find inspiration in works on view at the museum. These chosen works serve as springboards for the students to create their own original artwork in various media. The program culminates with a juried exhibition, the only one on Long Island to provide high schoolers the opportunity to display their artwork in an art museum. “My artwork was inspired by Joseph Constantino’s photograph ‘Guggenheim with Calder,’ whose upward viewpoint reminded me of stars,” said Selkirk, who
attended a special opening reception and awards ceremony at the museum. “Stars are important to me because I’ve moved around my whole life. Everything constantly changed but the stars and moon remained the same.” Selkirk found the gallery exhibit and reception an eye-opener. “For the first time, I had a piece of my artwork hanging on a wall in a museum being viewed by so many people, next to so many other extraordinary pieces,” she said, describing the experience as “epic.”

program is a public/private partnership between the Town and Covanta, which operates the energy-fromwaste facility in West Babylon. It is designed to encourage students who are doing science fair projects or advanced study projects in environmental science courses to focus on renewable energy sources, greenhouse gas reduction, development of alternative building materials or any other means to reduce global warming and environmental degradation. This year’s contest featured over fifty projects by students from seventh to twelfth grade from school districts across the Town. The top three prizes this year were all claimed from students from Babylon Junior-Senior High School. Two years ago, the school received
a sizeable donation from local nursing home owner Theresea Santmann for a dedicated science lab, which has led to projects from the school being showcased as part of exhibits at Brookhaven National Laboratory and Rockefeller University in New York City. Deputy Superintendent Peter Daly, Principal Al Cirone and teacher Claire Birone were in attendance for the scholarship presentation, where they were honored for their schools great accomplishments. Also recognized at this year’s event was science teacher Dr. Daniel Leccese of Copiague Middle School, who had the highest rate of participation in this year’s competition. There were twenty seven projects submitted to this year’s competition from Dr. Leccese’s classes. This year’s winners

Golf Outing Set Angela’s House will hold its annual golf outing at Indian Hills Golf Club in Northport on June 9th to support its mission of helping care for medically frail children and their families. The event, now in its 12th year, helps cover the cost of medical supplies, equipment and services for children with special health needs. The outing is one of a series of events held annually to support
the agency, which was founded 20 years ago by Bob and Angie Policastro, whose daughter Angela suffered severe brain damage during birth. The outing features putting tee and driving range activities beginning at 9:45 a.m., followed by an 11 a.m. shotgun start and 18 holes of golf on one of Long Island’s most challenging and breathtaking private courses. Golfers are
also treated to breakfast and lunch, with play followed by a cocktail hour and awards dinner. Foursomes are $1,350, while sponsorships start as low as $100. Did you ever have one of those days when... well, let’s just leave it at that. We’ve all surely had them, whatever it is they entail, which usually leads to unnecessary levels of irritation and aggravation. And, more often than not, we are quick to blame others for the series of events which unfolds. Seems only fair. Maybe there is something to that old “got up on the wrong side of the bed” excuse; perhaps our days are destined to
progress precisely how our respective moods dictate. If this is true, then we may as well just crawl back under the covers and call it a day, no? No sense even trying to give it a go and turn things around. Or so many would have you believe… The thing is, if you want to walk around being miserable, go for it. Raising The Level Deer Park science teachers David Knuffke and Jon Steigerwald were among only 42 Long Island teachers named as New York State Master Teachers by the governor’s office. These honorees are the first group from Long Island; a total of 215 teachers statewide have been named Master Teachers to date. Many districts had no honorees, and few districts had more than one make it through the extremely rigorous selection process. The program, which began last October, recognizes science, technology, engineering and math educators who have demonstrated exceptional
skills in mentoring peers and furthering their professional development, part of the state’s mission to upgrade science education and assist students in preparing for careers in the STEM subjects. Knuffke has taught AP biology and honors chemistry at Deer Park High School for a decade, after obtaining his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in biology and education at Stony Brook University. “I really like teaching science,” he said, noting that his selection was enhanced by the fact that he is very active in the AP bio community, serving as a forum moderator.

“I focus on inquiry education,” he said of his less traditional teaching method, which he noted, keys into where science education is heading. “I train students how to ask questions and give them the tools they need to collect their own data.” Steigerwald, who teaches eighth-grade science at Robert Frost Middle School, has been at Deer Park for nine years. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in secondary science education at Dowling College, and an advanced certificate for school administration from Hofstra University. “Constant education and professional development” is what he cites as the basis for his Master Teacher honor. “I continually take a lot of classes and workshops, and pass on my tech knowledge to coworkers.” As for his teaching style, he said, “I make it fun and make it relevant,” with extensive
use of technology. He utilizes laptops for data collection, assessing students to address issues before testing. Both Knuffke and Steigerwald emphasize the future of the teaching profession, how skilled, knowledgeable educators are using new methods and technology to improve learning for students. “This is a singularly amazing time to be a teacher,” said Knuffke. “Our understanding of how students learn continues to advance. We are provided with access to a technological palette that, if used properly, can fundamentally shift instruction. With a few clicks of a button, I am able to create and share materials with my students, colleagues and the entire world. I am eager to continue in my own progression as a Master Teacher, and to help others do the same,” said Knuffke.

Deer Park’s Robert Frost Middle School recently hosted the New York State Science and Engineering Fair, involving participation from dozens of districts and hundreds of high school and middle school students from across Long Island. Four of Frost’s own young scientists successfully competed in the Broadcom Division of the STEM-oriented fair. Anthony Machuca researched ways to make

Engineering Fair fuel from wood, while Kirat Singh’s research explored ways to create energy from sound. Tamara Beauchamp’s work pertained to water purification. Fabiha Kahn, whose project involved experimenting with methods of oil removal from spills, placed for an award, which will be revealed at the NYSSEF award ceremony on May 21st at Jericho High School.

Audiences at Deer Park High School’s recent annual musical were enthralled by the colorful costumes, fun dances and warmhearted social commentary of the school’s production of Hairspray, directed by James Henry. Based on the 1988 John Waters film of the same name, the musical was written by Marc Shaiman, Scott Wittman, Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Meehan and reflects a theme of acceptance. The original 2002 Broadway production won eight Tony Awards. Set in 1962 Baltimore, it features a memorable set of songs reflecting the era of racial integration and TV dance
programs, which were delivered with precision and verve by the Deer Park actors. The high-octane cast included Sabrina Rudden as Tracy Turnblad, David Reyes as Corny Collins, Joseph McGarty as Edna Turnblad, Jaclyn Miano as Velma von Tussle, Ashley Casella as Penny Pingleton, Jerline Aristide as Motormouth Maybelle, Alexa Serrano as Amber von Tussle, Sam Henkel as Link Larkin, Alce Winters as Seaweed J. Stubbs, Mauricio Montes as Wilbur Turnblad and Jessica Orelus as Little Inez. Henry praised his students, saying, “This is the 10th musical I have

Winter Athletes Honored With many athletes in attendance, 10 Deer Park High School sports teams were recognized at the school’s winter athletic awards ceremony during a recent Board of Education meeting. As their families watched with pride, Athletic Director Dominick Fontana called them to the podium to receive their certificates. Successfully balancing commitments to athletics and academics, seven of the teams – varsity boys basketball, varsity girls basketball, varsity boys swimming/diving, varsity girls track, varsity boys track, varsity cheerleading and varsity kickline – were honored as Scholar/Athlete teams
by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association, a recognition that requires teams to have at least five players and earn a cumulative team GPA of 90 percent or higher. The varsity boys basketball team won the League IV championship and made it to the Suffolk County Class AA playoff finals. Both head coach John McCaffrey and JV coach Ron Langella were named League IV Coach of the Year. Individual students earning accolades included Karon Blackwell (AllLeague, All-Conference, All-Tournament Team), Aaren Edmead (AllLeague, All-Conference, All-County, League IV
Player of the Year, AllTournament Team, Long Island Player of the Year and first-team All-Long Island, along with 1,000 career points), Kahwahn Nipper (All-League) and Tyler Pierre (Academic All-County, Scholar/ Athlete). The varsity girls basketball team, coached by Mike Gennaro, qualified for the Class AA playoffs, led by Sabrina Grunseich (All-League, Scholar/Athlete), Victoria Major (All-Rookie Team) and Kristy Vitucci (AllLeague, All-County, Scholar/Athlete). Led by League IV Coach of the Year Mike McLaughlin, the varsity wrestlers – nine of whom were named All-
League – won 19 dual meets this season en route to being voted Most Improved Team by the Suffolk County Wrestling Coaches Association. Additional accolades went to Thomas Cox (AllCounty, state qualifier), David Hamil (All-County, All-State), Zach Lugo (All-County, All-State) and Valter Piccini (AllCounty). Lugo set new school records for career wins and pins. The JV wrestling team, coached by Greg Schollmeyer, earned their league’s coveted Sportsmanship Award. In varsity boys swimming/diving, coached by Craig Mangio, Deer Park was paced by John Pawelko (All-
League, Scholar/Athlete) and Brandon Peskett (All-League, All-County). Both swimmers were state qualifiers and set school records. All-Leaguer Natalie Tianga was one of numerous Scholar/ Athlete members of the varsity girls track squad, coached by Jim Petti. The varsity boys track team, coached by Tom Brouillard, likewise boasted many Scholar/ Athlete students. Three also earned All-League status: Vincent Cotrone, Nick Fenton and Andrew Schaefer. Coach Kyle McCourt led the varsity bowlers to the Suffolk playoffs. Jennifer Depre earned the league’s Sportsmanship Award,
while state qualifier Adam Zimmerman was named All-League and All-County. Deer Park’s varsity cheerleading squad, coached by Lia Demyen, included 11 Scholar/ Athletes, while the varsity kickline had 13. The kickline team, coached by Ariel Miano and choreographed by Samantha McIllwaine, finished first in the kick category and second in the pom category at the Long Island Kickline Association championships. They also won first place in pom and second place in kick at the nationals.

Celebrating Our Earth On Saturday, May 3rd, the Town of Babylon’s Annual Earth Celebration was held at Town Hall Park in Lindenhurst, with hundreds of residents and dozens of vendors in attendance – making this year’s event the most successful one yet. Over thirty vendors and booths were set up on the lawn of Town Hall to display various environmental displays and giveaways for guests. In attendance for the event were Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilwoman Jacqueline Gordon, Councilman Tom Donnelly, Receiver of Taxes Corinne DiSomma, Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory, Suffolk County Legislator Kevin McCaffrey and Babylon Village Mayor Ralph Scordino. Thirty two booths and presentations were set-up for residents to experience and learn about environmental issues. Representatives from Town’s Department of Environmental Control were on-hand to showcase the Town’s environmental efforts, including the successful Long Island Green Homes program, the Geiger Lake Park Redevelopment,
and storm water management programs. Residents were Several school and community organizations took part provided with free “pooper scoopers” and reusable grocery bags in this year’s event, including two groups Suffolk County made from recycled materials. The Town Animal Shelter was Community College. The college’s Community Service Club painted, prepared and raffled off residential rain barrels, which collect storm water from roofs for preservation and reuse. Also from Suffolk County Community College was Phi Theta Kappa, who collected old sneakers for Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe program, which recycles athletic shoes for use in inner-city playgrounds and sports courts across the country. Students from North Babylon High School’s Environmental Science program also had a booth to display some of their environmental projects while representatives from the West Babylon Main Street Organization sold plants to residents in honor of Mother’s Day. Also on-hand were businesses and vendors, such as Lowe’s Home Improvement and Vivant Solar, to display their “green” products, some of which were raffled off. Residents were invited to also in attendance with pets from the shelter that are currently “spin the wheel” at 7-Eleven’s table to win free coffee and food. looking for their new homes.
