The ancient tradition of meditation is still valuable for people of our modern times. People today still face a great deal of turmoil in their private lives, and we see the world is always facing problems. When people face difficulties, many of them feel so hopeless they turn to alcohol and drugs to drown their

pain, creating even more problems for themselves, their families, and society. People who face illnesses or their own mortality undergo spiritual pain in wondering what awaits them beyond this world. Families who lose a loved one also are in pain in wondering where that loved one is gone. People face financial problems all

over the world. There is no end to the problems in life. Although meditation does not take away our outer problems, it lifts us to a place in which we do not experience their pinching effects. During the time we meditate we enter realms of love, bliss, and joy so that we do not feel the stress of our

outer life. Then, when we come out of meditation, we carry that joy with us throughout the day. It helps us see life from a new angle of vision in which we know the outer struggles of life are only temporary and that there is a place of eternal peace and happiness within that

Deer Park Once Again Wins Best Communities For Music Education Award

The NAMM Foundation has once again bestowed a Best Community for Music Education designation on the Deer Park School District’s vigorous music program. Now in its 24th year, the Best Communities designation recognizes outstanding

efforts in making music education part of a wellrounded education. Only 830 districts across the United States were given this award for 2023.

The Charity of the Month for May is LI Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF) is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The organization, which encompasses New York State’s Nassau, Su olk, Queens, and Kings (Brooklyn) Counties, was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music in all its forms. LIMEHOF, located in Stony Brook, is heavily engrossed in our local communities and o ers Long Islanders many ways to get involved.

As like any non-profit, their volunteers play a large role in their e orts. Each and every person who gives their time as a volunteer is dedicated to help support their mission. Additionally, donations of any size are accepted and appreciated. Your donation will help preserve our rich musical heritage and assist in providing music education programs for children and adults, including scholarships to deserving high school students. Specific donation amounts will allow you to get your name/ information in their Hall of Fame, engraved on either a Quarter Note ($250), Half Note ($500) or Whole Note ($1000).

The Hall of Fame is now accepting applications for their 2023 Student Scholarship program, where they will award $500 scholarships to graduating students. These scholarships will provide funding for eligible graduating high school students from Nassau, Su olk, Brooklyn, Queens, or Kings (Brooklyn) Counties who have shown an interest in pursuing a career in music.

Suffolk Awarded $2 Million Navy Workforce Training Grant To Support Submarine Operations

The United States Navy’s Submarine Industrial Base has awarded Suffolk County Community College’s Advanced Manufacturing and Workforce Development program $2 million over five years to recruit and train the next generation of welders and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machine operators in

support of the mission of one Columbia Class and two Virginia Class submarines. The submarine industrial base is the United States’ unique and highly specialized workforce and manufacturing base which supports the skills and technology needed to design, build, repair and

provide support for the Navy’s submarines. The Navy said there are five industrial base pipelines in the United States and estimates more than 130,000 new workforce personnel program-wide will be needed between now and 2030 to fulfill its mission. Long Island is home to one of the densest pockets of manufacturers

for the program.

The $2 million in scholarships will cover the full tuition of 100 students per year -- a total of 250 welders and 250 CNC Machine Operators over the five-year life of the program -- that will help local employers in the defense manufacturing pipeline fill a growing need for skilled workers,

according to Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Edward Bonahue, who said the program will launch in the fall of this year.

“This investment in our welding and manufacturing certificates will allow us to get more trainees into the workforce more quickly,”

Bonahue said. “The need for highly trained technicians in the defense manufacturing pipeline is a national priority, and we’re proud that the Navy and the Submarine Industrial Base recognize the critical role Suffolk’s workforce programs play in meeting that need,” Bonahue said.
