It’s Safe Digging Month: PSEG Long Island Reminds You To Call 811 Before You Start A Project

April is National Safe Digging Month and PSEG Long Island reminds customers, contractors and excavators that the law requires them to call 811 before digging to ensure underground pipelines, conduits, wires and cables are properly marked out.

Every digging project, even a small project like planting a tree or building a deck, requires a call to 811. It’s the law. The call is free and the mark-out service is free. The call must be made whether the job is being performed by a professional or a doit-yourselfer. Striking an underground electrical line can cause serious injury and outages, and result in repair costs and fines.

“It’s spring once again, and people on Long Island and in the Rockaways are starting outdoor improvements to their homes and businesses. Calling 811 ahead of time helps protect underground utility lines and, more importantly, the safety of anyone digging,” said Michael Sullivan, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution Operations. “Customers are getting the message. Last year there were more than 215,000 mark-out requests in our service area, and so far this year, there have been more than 44,000 requests to 811.”

According to Common Ground Alliance, a member-driven association of nearly 1,800 individuals and 250 member companies in every facet of the underground utility industry, 40% of active diggers in North America do not call 811 because they think their project is too shallow to require

it. All digging projects require a call to 811.

A free call to 811 in the service area automatically connects the caller to the local New York one-call center, which collects information about digging projects. The one-call center then provides the information to the utility companies, which send representatives to mark the locations of nearby underground lines with flags, paint or both. Once lines have been properly marked and confirmation from all of the utility owners is received, projects may proceed as long as caution is used around the marked areas.

Here’s important information to consider:

· Underground gas and electric lines are everywhere, even on private properties. These facilities can be easily damaged if dug into, with the potential to cause serious injuries. Digging into these lines can also disrupt vital utility services, resulting in costly delays, expensive repairs and environmental or property damage.

Whether the job is a major home improvement project or something as simple as a fence or mailbox post, a call to 811 must be placed beforehand to determine where it’s safe to dig.

Call 811 at least two business days before the commencement of each job to have underground pipes, wires and equipment located. Each facility owner must respond by providing the excavator with a positive confirmation indicating that marks are in place where utility lines are buried or that there are no existing facilities in the area of the proposed work. This service is free of charge.

Be sure to wait until all of the utilities have responded. Don’t dig until lines have been marked or you have received confirmation that the area is clear of facilities.

Property owners must maintain and respect the marks. Always hand dig within 2 feet of marked lines to find the existing facilities before using mechanized equipment.

If gas lines are damaged or there is a gas smell when excavating, call 911 immediately from a safe area.

Calling before you dig is more than a good idea − it’s the law. Additional information, including a booklet on safe excavating practices and the protection of underground facilities, can be found on the PSEG Long Island website.

Students rotated between 10 different stations, including stories, crafts, camping games and an amazing star lab, where students were educated by Deer

Park High School science teacher Katelyn O’Brien, Deer Park High School English as a new language teacher Amy Pellegrino and constellation expert Mark Levine.

“We were so happy to bring Camp Read Away back after a long hiatus,” teacher Beth Ann Vahl said. “We started to do Camp Read Away as a way for children to come and listen to stories, read by

wonderful JFK teachers and staff while sitting in tents and ‘roasting marshmallows.’ We have a very supportive PFC at JFK. Stephanie Baio and her team set up snacks for parents and gave each child a free book as a gift. The principals and I were so excited to have our students attend this event, and every single one left with a smile on their face.”

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The organization, which encompasses New York State’s Nassau, Su olk, Queens, and Kings (Brooklyn) Counties, was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music in all its forms. To date, the organization has inducted more than 100 musicians and music industry executives, and also o ers education programs and scholarships to Long Island students, sponsors the Long Island Sound Award, and features traveling educational exhibits, including a state-of-the-art mobile museum.

Last year, the organization opened its doors to their new awe-inspiring 8,800 Sq Ft facility in Stony Brook, NY, which features a large exhibition area, theater, performance area and an o cial “Hall of Fame Museum.”

All entry tickets include free parking and access to all their location has to o er. As a non-profit, your admission fee and donations help to support their Education Scholarship program for high school students and their Health and Harmony program, bringing musicians and entertainers to senior centers, hospitals and other places of need.

“For over a decade, the Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame has been delighted to distribute tens of thousands of dollars for scholarships, providing support to numerous aspiring professional musicians and music teachers,” said Tom Needham, LIMEHOF Education Committee Chairman.

The Hall of Fame is now accepting applications for their 2023 Student Scholarship program, where they will award $500 scholarships to graduating students. These scholarships will provide funding for eligible graduating high school students from Nassau, Su olk, Brooklyn, Queens, or Kings (Brooklyn) Counties who have shown an interest in pursuing a career in music.

American Parkinson Disease Association Celebrates The Importance Of Community & Connection During Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month

April is Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month and the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) Information & Referral Center of Suffolk County is hard at work to raise awareness of Parkinson’s disease (PD) and to celebrate the important connections that help foster a supportive community for people impacted by PD. Through

a nationwide network of Chapters and Information & Referral Centers, APDA works tirelessly to provide the support, education and research that helps people impacted by PD live life to the fullest. Often the first line of defense after a diagnosis, APDA connects people to the information they need to feel more in control; to the medical experts who can help them manage their disease; and

to the support and services that can help them feel less alone throughout their PD journey.

During the month of April, the APDA Information & Referral Center at St. Catherine of Siena and St. Charles Hospital in Suffolk County has a full roster of activities planned for the month (and beyond) and many ways for people to get involved, including

a Live Your Best Life with Parkinson’s Disease seminar on April 24 at St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson (to RSVP call 631-474-6797), and also many Parkinson’s support groups, programs such as the Loud & Lyrical vocal group (to register call 631862-3560), and more.

New York State Senator Monica R. Martinez Introduces Legislation To Provide Increased Protections For Wild And Exotic Animals

Senator Monica R. Martinez introduced bill S6211 which establishes a definition for exotic animals and expands the existing definition of wild animals. The bill further prohibits exotic animals from being harbored, traded, imported, sold or owned as pets in the same way as wild animals.

kangaroos are the largest marsupial in the world, growing up to 6ft tall and weighing up to 200lbs. A pet Gray kangaroo, which is roughly half the size of a Red kangaroo, made international news last year after he killed his owner and blocked paramedics from reaching him before being shot dead by the police. Wild animals are not pets and treating them like dogs or cats endangers children and animals alike.”

A Fine First Season For Deer Park’s New Unified Bowling Team

Deer Park High School’s Unified Bowling team recently completed a fine first season, guided by head coach Brian Tower and assistant coach John King. Through six marvelous matches during March, both home games at Strike 10 Lanes in Deer Park, and away contests at Larkfield Lanes and East Islip Lanes,

the participating students developed their athletic and social skills.

Sponsored by the Special Olympics, the Unified Bowling sports program combines unified athletes with intellectual disabilities and unified partners without intellectual disabilities to form competitive teams at

the high school level. In Unified Sports, students with disabilities are given the chance to interact with their peers who do not have a disability in a “typical” school experience, creating new friendships and building confidence and important social skills.

Runner Jasmine Parreno Lets Nothing Stand In Her Way

Jasmine Parreno was an avid runner, and it was a huge part of her day-to-day life. Unfortunately, this passion of hers came under fire when she was diagnosed with COVID-19 in 2021.

She battled a serious case of double pneumonia and both her lungs became severely damaged as a result. It was in those moments where she truly questioned if she would ever get the chance to run again. Persistent long haulers proceeded to present its symptoms with acute respiratory failure. Still, slowly but surely, she began to recooperate and has since recovered– despite some mild symptoms.

According to Jasmine, it was time for her to get back on her feet. She decided to challenge herself and hit the pavement once again. She ran her first 5K with OG Training Academy in Lindenhurst.

She hopes that her story would serve as a means to spread motivation and hope to those that are struggling with any illness, whether it be mentally or physically. “Do not let an illness, of any kind, convince you that something is impossible,” Jasmine said. “It doesn’t mean that it will be easy, but definitely worth trying!”

Currently, Jasmine has signed up for her first Sprint Triathalon with New York Triathalon at Rockaway Beach and will continue her running career, letting nothing stand in her way!

GOLD MEDALISTS - The Hofstra University Dance Team headed to Florida last month to represent the United States at the International Cheer Union World Championship. With over 50 countries represented, all 23 dancers on the team wore their uniform with pride and happily left as Premier Pom ICU Gold Medalists! Hofstra’s dance program currently has ten national
