New York State Senator Mario R. Mattera (2nd Senate District) is proud to join with Long Island Cares to help protect pets throughout our region. To assist the organization’s 12th Annual Legislative Pet Food Drive Challenge, Senator Mattera’s district office will serve as a collection point for pet supplies to help the charity restock Baxter’s Pet Pantry to help ensure that Long Island families in need are able to care for their pets.

Senator Mattera’s Office will be collecting pet supplies for cats, hamsters, dogs, fish, birds, ferrets and others. To make it convenient, a donation box will be at Senator Mattera’s District Office located at 180 East Main Street, Suite 210, Smithtown, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Long Island Cares has stated that its most needed pet items are:

Long Island Cares, in partnership with the Animal Relief Fund Inc. (ARF), created Baxter’s Pet Pantry in 2009 to help pet-owning families throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties get the supplies they need. In addition to providing pet food, the Pet Pantry offers toys, pet clothes and other pet necessities.

From now until Wednesday, May 31st,

• 5 or 10 pound bags of dog and cat food

• Canned food for dogs and cats

• Dog and cat treats

• Collars and leashes

• Food For all animals including birds, fish, ferrets and hamsters

• Fish food

• Cat litter

• Small new toys

According to the organization, all donated pet

When a family falls on hard times, as many in our community have in the past couple of years, it is difficult for them to provide for everyone – including pets. The Charity of the Month for April is Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together

Long Island (RTLI) is a nonprofit organization, headquartered in Farmingdale, serving Nassau County and most of Su olk County. As an a liate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together, their mission is repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.

To accomplish their vision of safe and healthy homes for everyone, they provide free essential home safety repairs and modifications for economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, whether they are older adults, veterans, families or persons with a disability or limited mobility.

The beneficiaries of RTLI’s work, lowincome homeowners struggling to get by, are so appreciative of the repairs and modifications that this organization does to keep them safe and improve their quality of life. “I was desperate,” said a widow of a Navy veteran who welcomed RTLI’s helping hand. “Now I have so much less stress and a more comfortable and safer house.”

Another recent client said, “Thank you for treating my home like it was yours. You all showed professionalism, caring and impeccable workmanship. You made my home more livable and safer. You are doing a beautiful thing and should be very proud.” These words lift the spirits of the hardworking RTLI volunteers.

Their small o ce in Farmingdale has only one employee, so their volunteers are really a significant part of what they do. “Our volunteers are the heart and soul of our organization,” said Stella Hendrickson, President of RTLI. “Almost all are retired. They give their time, their talents, their expertise and their hearts

to those who need a helping hand.”

The volunteer teams work tirelessly to help our neighbors, traveling throughout Long Island, using their own cars and tools. They come from all walks of life and professions, from teachers to principals, business owners, social workers, administrative assistants, accountants and truck drivers. The list goes on and on, but they all have one thing in common; their commitment to do the right thing, give back, lend a hand and be there for someone in need.

Here are ways you can get involved:

•If you know someone who may benefit from their services, have them call the RTLI o ce at 631.777.7894, Monday – Friday, to see if they qualify for the free program.

•Join the RTLI team! Volunteers can sign up at rebuildingtogetherli.org/ volunteer-today. Currently they are looking for individuals who are fluent in Spanish and for an o ce person, particularly if they are familiar with Salesforce. Additionally, if you are handy with tools, the Nassau and Su olk crew teams are always looking for more help.

•Donate at rebuildingtogetherli. org. RTLI relies on the donations of our neighbors, some grants and corporate sponsorships, as they do not receive any government funding.

•RTLI encourages local business to get involved and sponsor a project. The organization can find the right project for your business to sponsor and you can then promote your generosity on social media to show your commitment to improving the health and safety of someone in need locally.

When we work together, we can bring about transformational change quickly in our communities.

Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) joined Town of Babylon dignitaries, league officials, parents, neighbors and young sluggers as the Deer Park Little League opened its 2023 baseball season with the annual parade and ceremony on Saturday, April 15.

After stepping off from John F. Kennedy Intermediate School on Lake Avenue, marchers paraded up Deer Park Avenue and turned on to Old Country Road, making

their way to Pine Acres Park where they were greeted by Deer Park Little League President Joe Geosits, Baseball Director Chris Walker, Legislator Donnelly, Town of Babylon Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and Councilman DuWayne Gregory. Councilman Gregory threw out the first pitch and then Legislator Donnelly, at the invitation of league officials, provided the familiar and spirited “Play ball!” to officially start the season. The event was wellattended by excited players

and parents, eager to once again hear the crack of the bat.

“As a diehard fan, I always look forward to the start of baseball season, and I am thrilled to once again see our children having fun on the same fields I played on as a youth in Deer Park,” said Legislator Donnelly.

“I thank the directors, volunteers, coaches, parents and the entire community for continuously supporting our players.”

External Diploma Program

The National External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. NEDP, is a competency

based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for NEDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare better without the structure

of tests. This program is an alternative to other programs.

Long Island Music Hall of Fame Now Accepting 2023 Music Scholarship Applications

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHoF) it is now accepting applications for their 2023 Student Scholarship program. The Deadline for applications is Friday, May 12th, 2023.

LIMEHoF will award $500

scholarships to graduating students. These scholarships will provide funding for eligible graduating high school students from Nassau, Suffolk, Brooklyn, Queens, or Kings (Brooklyn) Counties who have shown an interest in pursuing a career

Eligibility criteria is:

• Graduating high school senior from Nassau, Suffolk, Brooklyn (Kings) or Queens counties

• Minimum 2.5 GPA

• Accepted full-time at an accredited college or university

• Demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in music

• Demonstrate Financial need

• U.S. citizen or legal resident with I-55 permanent residency
