Deer Park Third Graders Exhibited At SCALA Children’s Show

This year’s Suffolk County Art Leaders Association Children’s Show features the artwork of Fatimah Imran and Zoe Thompson, both third graders at Deer Park’s John F. Kennedy Intermediate

School. Both students were invited to a reception on March 25 along with their families, teachers and SCALA members, where all could view the displayed art. The exhibit will run through April 26

at Babylon Old Town Hall. “This show is such a nice opportunity to showcase student artwork and see all of the talent within our community,” art teacher Briana Nussbaum said.

2023 Memory Walk And Spring Festival

The Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center (ADRC) will host its Annual Memory Walk and Spring Festival at Marjorie R. Post Community Park, 451 Unqua Road, Massapequa, NY on Saturday, April 22, 2023. The walk will begin with registration at 8:30 am, a light breakfast, and opening ceremony. The Memory Walk and Spring Festival is being held on Earth Day and will have activities celebrating the planet as well as a Memory Tree to honor loved ones, archery activities, music, photos, food, beverages and more! In addition, many other community organizations are joining us and will be sharing resources with participants. This is an event you do not want to miss.

Each year, the Memory Walk serves to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia, honor and remember those impacted by the disease, and raise funds for ADRC to continue to provide support and services to families on Long Island.

All funds raised stay on Long Island and are put right back into serving local families impacted by the disease.

It is $25 per person to participate and Children 12 and under are FREE. Consider creating a Team and having friends and colleagues join you in raising funds and awareness. When Times Get Tough, Watch Your Money

When I started my business in 2021, I read as many articles as I could about finances and cash flow. I heard dozens of horror stories about people who went out of business because they ran out of money; I didn’t want to join them on the failed business line.

Rebuilding Together

Long Island (RTLI) is a nonprofit organization, headquartered in Farmingdale, serving Nassau County and most of Su olk County. As an a liate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together, their mission is repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.

To accomplish their vision of safe and healthy homes for everyone, they provide free essential home safety repairs and modifications for economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, whether they are older adults, veterans, families or persons with a disability or limited mobility.

Security and comfort should come to mind when we think of home...but what if your home didn’t make you feel that way? Maybe there’s no heat or hot water for your family, or your doors don’t lock so you prop a chair under the doorknob each night. When you’re living on a fixed or low income, making repairs or modifications is typically just a wish, not a reality. Homeowners know that taking care of small problems today can help avert larger, more costly problems tomorrow and this is where Rebuilding Together Long Island can come into play and help out! For more than 30 years, RTLI has focused on improving the living conditions of our neighbors and fulfilling those dreams of a safe, warm and accessible home.

Primarily a volunteer organization, they are neighbors helping neighbors and there is never a charge. From minor to sometimes major repairs, they improve the safety, health and well-being of every household. From handyman type repairs to modifications for our aging population and those with physical limitations, they’re ready to lend a hand.

Recent studies have shown that for people 65 and older, falls account for approximately 60 percent of all injury-related emergency department visits and over 50 percent of injuryrelated deaths annually. Also, up to 80 percent of falls in the home occur in the bathroom. RTLI can install grab bars and ADA height toilets, widens doorways where possible and can even have bathtubs converted to walk-in showers. Wheelchair ramps are one of their most requested modifications and can be constructed in two days. So how can you help?

•If you know someone who may benefit from their services, have them call the RTLI o ce at 631.777.7894, Monday – Friday, to see if they qualify for the free program.

•Join the RTLI team! Volunteers can sign up at rebuildingtogetherli.org/ volunteer-today. Currently they are looking for individuals who are fluent in Spanish and for an o ce person, particularly if they are familiar with Salesforce. Additionally, if you are handy with tools, the Nassau and Su olk crew teams are always looking for more help.

•Donate at rebuildingtogetherli. org. RTLI relies on the donations of our neighbors, some grants and corporate sponsorships, as they do not receive any government funding.

•RTLI encourages local business to get involved and sponsor a project. The organization can find the right project for your business to sponsor and you can then promote your generosity on social media to show your commitment to improving the health and safety of someone in need locally.

When we work together, we can bring about transformational change quickly in our communities.

I wrote down some great tips about finances and cash flow that helped me deal with all the uncertainty over the past few years. Here are a few tips that almost any business owner can use today:

Keep Two Eyes on Your Receivables. Thankfully I don’t have to extend credit to my clients; my business is transactional. When the sale is done, I get my check. If you have customers on credit, avoid having a “net 30” client become a “net 60” client, or worse. When times get tough, payments will slow down. A friend of mine in business uses the “squeaky wheel” method on late paying customers. They will call until they connect with someone to find out if the late payment was an oversight or if it’s something bigger. He does everything

he can to minimize any damage to his business.

Keep Two More Eyes on Your Payables and Purchases. All business owners should know exactly how much money needs to go out every month between fixed and variable expenses. If cashflow is starting to get tight, avoid making unnecessary purchases, especially ones that can wait a few months. Besides, it’s possible that the cost of whatever you plan to buy will come down in a few months as more and more people slow their spending. Remember, in tough times, cash is king.

Take the 30-Day Test

This is something every-

one should do today! If something happened in your business, good or bad, how much money could you raise immediately or in the next 30 days? If your delivery van needed a new engine, your commercial freezer broke, or if you landed a huge account and needed to hire people and buy more inventory, could you do it? These are great questions to ask BEFORE they happen.

If You Need Help, Ask!

Admittedly, when I started my company, managing my financials wasn’t something I enjoyed doing. So, I hired a bookkeeper and an Accountant (now my Accountant also does my bookkeeping). It means having an extra set of ears and eyes watching over my business and making sure I avoid as many financial nightmares as possible. It also allows me to build on my financial security and take advantage of opportunities in a down market.

Tough times shouldn’t be the only time you watch your finances. Think of it as exercise; the more you do it, the better you will feel and sleep at night.

New York Senator Monica R. Martinez’s Bill Passes, Providing Timely Death Benefits For Volunteer Firefighters And Ambulance Workers

Senator Monica R. Martinez’s bill S.4711 has passed the Senate, ensuring timely payment of death benefits for volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers who die in the line of duty. The bill amends Section 7 of the Volunteer Firefighters’ Benefit Law and the Volunteer Ambulance Workers’ Benefit Law, mandating payment of benefits within ninety days upon the filing of application.

“Delaying payment of death benefits causes significant financial and emotional distress to the beneficiaries of our

volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers,” said Senator Martinez. “It’s unacceptable for families to wait over six months to receive the compensation they are entitled to. This legislation will provide much-needed relief to those who have lost loved ones in service to their communities.”

The bill encourages communication and coordination between volunteer fire and ambulance service organizations, workers’ compensation boards, volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers and their families to work

together and determine whether a death or injury occurred in the line of duty. This process can be a long and daunting one and this legislation will remove the burden of excessive delays in payment.

“I’m proud to have sponsored this bill and grateful for the support of my colleagues in the Legislature,” said Senator Martinez. “Volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers put their lives on the line every day to protect our communities. It’s our duty to ensure their families are taken care of in the event of a tragedy.”

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony And 9/11 Monument Unveiling

On March 26, 2023, the Sons & Daughters of Italy in America (OSDIA) Constantino Brumidi Lodge #2211 of Deer Park held a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and 9/11 Monument Unveiling.

In attendance were Constantino Brumidi Lodge Members, Members from neighboring Lodges, OSDIA National and State reps, representatives from the Town of Babylon, FDNY, NYPD, SCPD, USMC, Deer Park FD, Dix Hills Fire

Department, Community Leaders/Members, family and friends. The ceremony was MC’d by Lodge President Sabrina Savino and was opened with a joint Color Guard from the USMC and FDNY. Pastor Gius from Ss. Cyril & Methodius Church provided the Invocation.

The Garden includes a park for the community to enjoy featuring beautiful plants along with engravable Bricks, Park Benches and Trees in the front of their building on Deer Park

Avenue.

The 9/11 Monument includes a piece of steel commissioned by the FDNY from that fateful day. It also includes and a tribute to their deceased members including Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient Anthony Casamento and those heroes lost on September 11, 2001.

Deer Park Teens Earn Prestigious Girl Scout Silver Award

The Girl Scouts of Suffolk County recently celebrated local Girl Scouts who have earned the prestigious Girl Scout Silver Award during the annual Silver Award Ceremony and Breakfast, which included a keynote address by the Commissioner of the Suffolk County

Department of Labor Licensing and Consumer Affairs, Rosalie Drago.

The Silver Award program recognizes the power and dedication shared by each recipient as they join an elite group of young women who earn the highest Girl Scout honor a Cadette Scout can achieve.

Members of the Deer Park Service Unit 607 and Dix Hills Service Unit 610; Iyana Carpenter, Maddie Kleiber, Allie Fade, Jaidyn Schabe, Rebecca Comba, Patel Anjli, Caitlin Rafferty, Samaya Vsyali, AnnaBelle Deaner, Jillian Lyons, and Isabelle Eisdorfer were among those

acknowledged for this great accomplishment.

“The Silver Award is the highest distinction that Girl Scouts in this age range can earn,” said GSSC President & CEO Tammy Severino. “It takes a great deal of responsibility, dedication, and confidence for these Girls to complete these important projects as they create a notable positive impact in their community. I applaud these girls’ commitment to making a difference and joining a highly distinguished group of accomplished young women.”

To achieve a Silver Award, Girl Scouts each tackled a project that held a deep significance to them and would greatly benefit the world around them. To be eligible for a Silver Award, each recipient must complete their Cadette Journey before beginning their Silver Award project. To meet the Girl Scout Silver Award requirements, each candidate must complete at least 50 hours toward their project.

Girls in grades 6-8 begin their Silver Award journey by identifying a civic or social issue they care about. Next, a Girl Scout builds a team to support her project with the mission to create a positive

impact in her community by addressing an issue she feels passionate about. Through the process, Silver Award Girl Scouts build invaluable problemsolving, organizational, and leadership skills while educating and inspiring others.

Troop 518 member Iyana Carpenter helped share the importance of being environmentally responsible with her community. She worked towards bringing awareness throughout her neighborhood and keeping the community clean and green to keep a sustainable shared environment.

For her project, Rebecca Comba made pet adoption kits for the animals at the Babylon Animal Shelter.

Maddie Kleiber and Allie Fade created an outdoor classroom for the local school. The outdoor space will give the students a new and fun learning environment.

Jaidyn Schade created memory boards to help patients with dementia remember and start conversations. She also donated book carts that included craft supplies and booklets with educational information on dementia.

Troop 6100 member Patel Anjli made and donated compost bins to different members

of our community. She also taught them how to compost and the benefits of composting.

Troop 1062 members Caitlin Rafferty, Samaya Vsyali, and AnnaBelle Deaner worked on a project to help build self-esteem, self-confidence in teens. They made hygiene kits, inspirational bracelets, and cards that were given to teens who were seeking counseling.

Jillian Lyons and Isabelle Eisdorfer made fleece blankets, collected towels and food and donated them to the local animal shelter. They also created an informational brochure for families who were seeking to adopt a pet at the shelter.
