Hardworking Winter Sports Teams

Deer Park High School held its winter varsity sports awards night on March 9, honoring the outstanding studentathletes of nine teams: cheerleading, kickline, boys and girls basketball, wrestling, boys bowling, boys swimming and diving, and boys and girls winter track. Members of each

team were presented with certificates and plaques recognizing Most Valuable Player awards, Coaches Awards, Spirit Awards and Scholar-Athlete awards.

“To our coaches and our athletes, obviously everything revolves around what you do, so thank you for all the time that you spend, all the sacrifices

and all the hard work through good times and bad,” Athletic Director Dominick Fontana said. He also lauded the efforts and support of the studentathletes’ parents, the district board of education and administration, and the diligent Booster Club.

The Charity of the Month for April is Rebuilding Together Long Island

Long Island (RTLI) is a nonprofit organization, headquartered in Farmingdale, serving Nassau County and most of Su olk County. As an a liate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together, their mission is repairing homes, revitalizing communities and rebuilding lives.

To accomplish their vision of safe and healthy homes for everyone, they provide free essential home safety repairs and modifications for economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, whether they are older adults, veterans, families or persons with a disability or limited mobility.

Although RTLI’s teams work year round, April is a particularly important month because it is National Rebuilding Month. “Too many Americans su er from the health and economic consequences of living in substandard housing and under served communities,” said Caroline Blakely, President & CEO of Rebuilding Together. “National Rebuilding Month serves as an annual month-long call to service to encourage people to support their neighbors, strengthen their community and ensure everyone is living in safe and healthy homes.”

RTLI together with its 120 sister a liates will all look to surpass last year’s accomplishment of working with over 13,000 volunteers to repair close to 800 homes and over 150 community centers nationwide. As you drive around Long Island, watch for RTLI’s lawn signs. If you see one, you will know their volunteers are hard at work helping someone who needs a helping hand.

Once accepted into the program, each home receives a safety check of every room. Each home has its own challenges. RTLI also listens to the homeowner to determine their priorities. Hazards and unsafe conditions are noted and given to the volunteer crews so they can prepare a materials list and then

get to work. Minor plumbing and electrical repairs may be made, but they may also do weatherization, flooring (if the current floor is a hazard), sheet rock repair and a myriad of other repairs. If someone has limited mobility, a wheelchair ramp may be constructed, grab bars and railings installed, doorways widened where possible to accommodate a wheelchair. Conversions of bathtubs to walk-in showers can also be done and under certain circumstances, a stair glide may be installed. While RTLI cannot always take care of every issue in the home, they will tell you that every home they work on is left safer than is was and the lives of its residents are improved when the project is complete! So how can you help?

•If you know someone who may benefit from their services, have them call the RTLI o ce at 631.777.7894, Monday – Friday, to see if they qualify for the free program.

•Join the RTLI team! Volunteers can sign up at rebuildingtogetherli.org/ volunteer-today. Currently they are looking for individuals who are fluent in Spanish and for an o ce person, particularly if they are familiar with Salesforce. Additionally, if you are handy with tools, the Nassau and Su olk crew teams are always looking for more help.

•Donate at rebuildingtogetherli. org. RTLI relies on the donations of our neighbors, some grants and corporate sponsorships, as they do not receive any government funding.

•RTLI encourages local business to get involved and sponsor a project. The organization can find the right project for your business to sponsor and you can then promote your generosity on social media to show your commitment to improving the health and safety of someone in need locally.

DECA Team Earns Four Trophies At State Conference

Deer Park High School’s DECA club returned with four trophies from the New York State Career Development Conference. Another three Deer Park students earned medals at the annual contest in March at the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center in Rochester. A total of 36 Deer Park DECA students competed, among more than 2,000 high school business students from across the state.

Top five overall trophy winners, all finishing in second place, were the team

of Sasha Khellawan and Brandon Lanaro (Buying and Merchandising Team Decision Making), Luis Rodriguez (Personal Financial Literacy) and Sidra Syed (Principles of Marketing). These four trophy winners earned the right to move on to compete in DECA’s International Career Development Conference in Orlando, Florida at the end of April.

Top 10 test medal winners were Shubat Alam (Travel and Tourism Team Decision Making), Jade Griffin (Apparel and

Accessories) and Madison Griffin (Principles of Marketing).

Additionally, senior Ryder Min was inducted into the New York DECA Honor Society, and Katia Papailler was elected to serve as a state officer. Papailler will be the vice president of competition for the 2023-2024 school year.

“Congratulations to all of our students on a job well done,” Deer Park DECA adviser Gregory Menig said.

Legislator Donnelly And County Office For The Aging Announce Local Senior Advocate Schedule

Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) is pleased to inform Babylon and Huntington residents about the local Suffolk County Office for the Aging Spring 2023 Senior Advocate Schedule. Senior advocates are County representatives who come out into the community and assist seniors with information gathering, completion of eligibility or recertification applications and referrals to appropriate community agencies.

“This is an excellent

chance for senior citizens to get the assistance and information they need by connecting with the County’s senior advocates right in their own communities,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I hope all those interested in the services that the Suffolk County Office for the Aging provides will take advantage of this opportunity.”

The Town Of Babylon Hosts The Wall That Heals Exhibit Helps Spread The Healing Legacy Of The Vietnam Veterans Memorial

The Town of Babylon will proudly host the traveling exhibit The Wall That Heals from October 5 to 8, 2023 at Tanner Park. A 375-foot replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C., the traveling exhibit pays tribute to over three million Americans who served in the U.S. Army in the Vietnam War and bears the names of the 58,281 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam. Similar to the exhibit, a smaller replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial wall drew thousands to Town Hall back in 1995.

“When we talked about doing this again, it was a nobrainer,” said Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer.

“We are grateful to have the opportunity to support our veterans in this meaningful manner and provide access to a powerful monument to all in our community. We would like to especially thank Charles Spencer for his instrumental role in bringing this exhibit to the Town.”

The Wall That Heals spreads the healing legacy of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C.. This exhibit aids thousands of veterans in their healing process, empowering them to encounter The Wall in the familiarity of their own communities and emboldening their strength and courage. It also serves as an important source of peace for family and friends of veterans and

learning tool for others in the community.

“It is an honor to host The Wall That Heals,” said Chair of the Town of Babylon Veterans Advisory Council and Councilman DuWayne Gregory. “I believe it will truly have a profound impact on our residents and encourage all to engage with this important exhibit.”

Fight For Charity Seeking Boxers For 2023 Main Event

Long Island Fight for Charity (LIFFC), the nation’s only allvolunteer charity fund raising event and program is now conducting its search for 2023 volunteer charity boxers. Since 2003, over 350 men and women have earned the title of LIFFC Alumni Boxer, volunteering their time to fundraise for local charities and get in shape to box in the annual main event.

The LIFFC 18th Annual Main Event will be on Monday, November 20, 2023 and will feature at least 10 bouts between volunteer charity boxers who have demonstrated their personal commitment to raising a minimum of $10,000 for the Fight for Charity organization, benefiting local charities, endure physical training and participate in promotional activities and media interviews.

Since its inception, the event has raised over $1.75 million for local, Long Island-based charities.

Applications are now being accepted for volunteer charity boxers who will enter training to prepare them to step in the ring at the 18th Annual Main Event. Boxing experience is not required. What is required is a commitment to fundraising, “character,” a willingness to train and be ready to meet a business colleague toeto-toe in the ring in front of a thousand fans. This is a rare opportunity for individuals to make a personal commitment of time, talent and to truly “give back.” Since 2003, LIFFC has distributed funds each year to Long Island charities including: Long Island Community Chest, The Genesis School, National Foundation for Human Potential (FREE) and many others.
