Benefits Of Leisure Activities
Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. An analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problemsolving, and map reading, among other activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

Outdoor Stations Of The Cross – 1.5 Mile Walking Service – Offered By Catholic Cemeteries Of Long Island At Cemetery Of The Holy Rood On Good Friday
Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island welcomes the Catholic faithful across Long Island to participate in its Stations of the Cross prayer service at Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury this Good Friday, April 7th. This prayer service, which is one of the largest attended events at Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island each year, is celebrated annually on Good Friday, one of the most solemn days of the Christian calendar. During the prayer service, the Catholic faithful will follow a 1.5 mile walking route throughout Holy Rood to commemorate Christ’s redemptive sacrifice through the 14 Stations of the Cross.
Each station is signified by a different cross/sculpture at the cemetery. Deacons from Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island will assist in leading the service for attendees.
Hundreds of Catholics are expected to take part in the Good Friday services at the
Cemetery of the Holy Rood.
Faithful can also experience Holy Rood’s Stations of the Cross on their own with selfdirected tours or via a virtual option for those who wish to partake from their homes.
The Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island’s Virtual Stations of the Cross can be viewed by visiting YouTube at the following link: Virtual Stations of the Cross Video.
Faithful utilizing the self-directed option who are walking the Stations of the Cross on their own can download the Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island Stations of the Cross Prayer Booklet as a guide with specific prayers at each station:
Stations of the Cross Prayers – Easy Print Format
Prayer booklets may also be picked up at Holy Rood Chapel. The Cemetery of the Holy Rood, located at 111 Old Country Road in Westbury, is open every day from 8 a.m.
to 5 p.m., with the Chapel closing at 4:30 p.m. daily.
“Offering families the opportunity to connect with our Lord’s sacrifice is critical for our mission as Catholics as the Lord’s journey leads to his triumph over death and the promise of eternal life. For those who wish to gather and follow Jesus’ journey, our in-person Stations of the Cross services – both guided with our deacons and selfdirected – are available and we expect large numbers of faithful from across Long Island to attend,” said Richard Bie, President/CEO of Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island.
Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island owns and operates four cemeteries across Long Island including Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Coram, Queen of All Saints Cemetery in Central Islip and Queen of Peace Cemetery in Old
Westbury. Queen of Peace is the first new Catholic cemetery to open on Long Island in decades and its chapel is expected to formally opened and available for the public to visit by the summer of 2023.
Catholic Cemeteries of
Long Island is dedicated to meeting both the spiritual and physical needs of the more than 1.4 million Catholics across the Diocese of Rockville Centre, the eighth largest Diocese in the country, which encompasses Nassau and Suffolk counties
on Long Island, NY.

Exploring Differences At Diversity And Inclusion Assemblies
Deer Park elementary school counselor Angeline Ramos recently presented three Diversity and Inclusion assemblies, in which students were able to learn about diversity through engaging activities and discussion, as well as the importance of inclusion.
The entire student body at John F. Kennedy Intermediate School recently participated in two sessions, featuring a performance by the Deer Park High School step team, directed by teacher Brianne Hertzog. Assemblies were later presented to second
graders at John Quincy Adams Primary School and May Moore Primary School.
“Our students explored the differences that make them unique, and how we can include each other regardless of our differences,” Ramos said.

Board Of Education Honors Student Writers And Influential Educators
The Deer Park Board of Education commended seven exceptional young writers who participated in the National Council for the Teachers of English national writing competition at the board’s March 22 meeting. Robert Frost Middle School eighth graders Arianna Ahmad, Vincent Cacciola, Victoria Hernandez and Cayden Zappola, and Deer Park High School juniors
Mohammad Fahad, Eadie Liu and Stephanie Sheeler were presented with certificates from both the board and the NCTE.
This is the first year that Deer Park has nominated students to the competition, which recognizes the top 1 percent of student writers in 8th and 11th grade nationwide. Last year, only 266 juniors and 116 eighth graders were selected. As part of the program, student nominees submitted portfolio writing to the NCTE national jury, who will name finalists in May.
“Our schools’ ELA teachers identified the ‘best of the best’ at Deer Park,” said Justin Uliano, Deer Park’s curriculum associate for ELA, reading and library. “Every NCTE competition student who is a representative of their school is unbelievably outstanding, and every student who is a representative of their state
is top-notch.”
Additionally, the board recognized three influential educators – District Administrator of World Languages and ENL Alicia Rosenberg, Deer Park High School Associate Principal Dina Pannone and world language teacher Nicole Bjarnason – for organizing the recent Passport to Culture Night at the high school, which invited Deer Park students to learn about some of the various cultures and traditions of peers in order to get a better understanding of those around them.
After an opening ceremony led by Bjarnason and Rosenberg, the attendees were treated to a performance by Gabrielle Mayne, Gabriella Ortiz, Fimitra Pavlatos and Gianna Sanchez from the high school’s women’s choir. Student leaders from the French Honor Society, LatinX Student Association, Muslim Student Association, South Asian Culture Club and Spanish Honor Society ran 12 different rooms representing 11 different countries – Afghanistan, Bangladesh, China, El Salvador, Greece, Haiti, Jamaica, Morocco, Pakistan, Peru and Vietnam – and the territory of Puerto Rico. In each room, elementary, middle and high school student attendees
participated in analyzing the culture studied, as well as participating in or creating a practice or product of that culture.
After visiting a room, student attendees received stamps that verified their “visit” to the nation in their personalized passports. Students also visit the International Cafe, where they sampled various delicious foods from the students’ cultures. The night ended with students dancing the night away with the Arts Horizons Dance Around the World assembly.
“The Deer Park community is well known for its immense diversity, and this was an amazing night,” Bjarnason said. “Many thanks to our amazing high school students for sharing their passion for their roots and beautiful diverse backgrounds.”
“It was an opportunity for our students to teach the community, staff members and other students about their culture and where their families come from,” Superintendent James Cummings said.
“It was a night of sharing, of learning and of really just celebrating our students and their heritage,” Board of Education President Donna Marie Elliott said. “It was such a wonderful experience.”

The Charity of the Month for April is Rebuilding Together Long Island
www.rebuildingtogether.org
Rebuilding Together
Long Island is the local chapter of the national nonprofit organization, Rebuilding Together. The charity provides free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with disabilities and families young children. Those who receive the free home repairs must meet their financial criteria. Their mission is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They proudly help economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence.
In 1992, a small group of retirees were looking for ways to give back to their community. They saw how many homeowners were struggling to keep up with the expense of maintaining the homes. Seniors needed modifications so they could age in place safely. They reached out to the national organization Rebuilding Together, Inc. and soon became the local a liate, Rebuilding Together Long Island. Currently there are approximately 120 a liates across the country.
Today they have 100 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. These individuals come from all walks of life and work tirelessly to lend a helping hand with carpentry, electrical, plumbing repairs, along with home modifications weatherization, yard clean-up and more. They have provided repairs to over 2,600 local homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Su olk counties.
Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard work worth it. There are countless testimonials from those who have received assistance, including the touching letter below.
smoothly it all came together! Not only is the ramp functional, it’s beautiful and brightens up the dark patio! It was a great moment when I first wheeled my father down the driveway, onto the sidewalk, and he raised up his arms with a big smile and loudly exclaimed “Hello world, I’m here!” I can hear my mom saying “God is good” and I want to add, thank God for good people.”
With the support of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work and involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island, however they need your help to keep up the momentum! There are three main ways you can get involved with their organization:
1) Volunteer: They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills; training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection (those fluent in English and in Spanish is a plus!)
2) Sponsor a Project: Attention business owners! You can sponsor a project they are actively working on, giving you the opportunity to demonstrate your commitment to community service and to improving the quality of life for people on Long Island.
STUDENT WRITERS AND INFLUENTIAL EDUCATORS HONORED - At the Deer Park Board of Education’s March 22 meeting, District Administrator of World Languages and ENL Alicia Rosenberg, Deer Park High School Associate Principal Dina Pannone and world language teacher Nicole Bjarnason were recognized for organizing the recent Passport to Culture Night at the high school. “I just want to reach out again to thank all involved with the preparation and construction of the ramp for my dad. It has been a sincere pleasure; from the first meeting with Marian and Kathy, to meeting Joe and coming up with the plan, and then witnessing the building process. The crew were all so wonderful and inspiring! I was amazed at how quickly and
3) Donate: Consider making a donation at www. rebuildingtogetherlongisland.org! Funding is a continuous requirement to support their e orts and all donations are greatly appreciated. The money you donate stays on Long Island to help our neighbors! If you would like to get involved through any of the ways listed above, please call 631.777.7894 or email rtliorg@ gmail.com. Stay tuned for next week’s article for more information.

Become A Certified Soccer Referee Or Assistant Referee
Local Small Business Owner Opens A Refuge For Veterans
By Randy Vogt, Director of Public Relations, Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association
As the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) gets ready to kick off its Spring Season in our 10 leagues from Long Island to the Canadian border, the growth of our programs has created a need for additional referees and assistant refs.
There are many wonderful things that happen when a person starts to ref including earning money, having the best view of the action, learning to manage people, learning more about the game, staying or becoming fit, expanding yourself by leaving your comfort zone as well as meeting the greatest people on soccer fields, including your new officiating colleagues. Becoming a youth soccer ref could be one of the best decisions you ever make!
Eastern New York is seeking new referees to be in the middle and/or on the line as assistant referees in youth soccer games. The minimum age is 14 years old to become certified.
Classes are happening throughout the state and they consist of an online learning process wrapped up by a field session. For more info about certification near you, please contact State Youth Referee Administrator Cheryl Aronson at syra@ enysreferee.org and she will let you know how to get started.
With approximately 100,000 youth soccer players––both boys and girls––and more than 25,000 volunteers, the non-profit Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) stretches from Montauk Point, Long Island to the Canadian border. Members are affiliated with 10
leagues throughout the association, which covers the entire state of New York east of Route 81.
ENYYSA exists to promote and enhance the game of soccer for children and teenagers between the ages of 5 and 19 years old, and to encourage the healthy development of youth players, coaches, referees and administrators. All levels of soccer are offered––from intramural, travel team and premier players as well as Children With Special Needs. No child who wants to play soccer is turned away. ENYYSA is a proud member of the United States Soccer Federation and United States Youth Soccer. For more information, please log on to http://www. enysoccer.com/
Scanlon’s Traveling Salon, a local small business serves vulnerable communities, such as seniors and homeless individuals across Long Island. Owner Eileen Scanlon has a heart for helping others and is actively involved in doing so. When she became aware of the fast growing rate of displaced/homeless veterans, she decided to embark on an effort to create an “intentional home share” for these individuals.
“In New York, rents and home prices are skyrocketing, which is forcing many to leave the state,” said Scanlon. “Even for those who stay here, owning a home is becoming quite unattainable. I wanted to embark on a mission that allowed me to offer a home for veterans in need, where they can live under one roof. They would share expenses and all upkeep the residence, allowing for camaraderie to blossom, but we would keep prices low.”
With a head full of dreams and a heart full of passion, Eileen purchased Ruby’s Whisper, an old 1700’s Tavern turned home in Hyde Park, NY, which she is now converting to a home share
for four to five low income veterans. The property is just a stones throw away from Marist College and the Vanderbilt/Roosevelt Estates, with public transportation nearby.
“The home will offer comfort, solace, space and a feeling of yesteryear,” said Eileen. “There are five lovely sized bedrooms, a spacious living room and cozy kitchen. The home will be furnished with the help of selfless individuals/ organizations that kindly donated items. The backyard offers veterans the ability to grow their own food and the veterans that stay with us can also utilize two large sheds for storage and there are two separate driveways in which will accommodate four vehicles. A family style home share like this for vets might mean the difference between paying rent and being able to pay their monthly food bill; a home share allows them to keep their monthly expenses much lower compared to if they were renting a place on their own.”
The home is undergoing renovations that will hopefully be finalized by the end of this summer.
“I have titled this whole project Heye’s Haven for Heroes, and I’m looking to have it fully incorporated as a 501C3 Non-Profit Organization as soon as possible. I’m so grateful to have this opportunity at this stage in my life, where I can pay forward in a way that I feel would make my father and grandfather, both veterans, rather proud.”
A GoFundMe Page has been created, where donations are being accepted to help assist with the price of renovations.
If you are interested in making a donation, please scan the QR below or visit www.heyeshaven.com/ about-us and click VISIT OUR GOFUNDME PAGE. “I’m so thankful for any donations, they truly help make a difference.”
If you are a veteran in need that is interested in learning more, such as becoming a resident at this special home, please contact Eileen Scanlon at 516.477.0469.

(NAPSI)—A recent study by Interactive Advertising Bureau shows that 96 percent of consumers begin their car search online. In fact, millennials spend as much as 12 to 13 hours researching cars
Used Car Buying Online
online before making the decision to buy.
Buying a used car requires even more research and there are lots of places online to do so. Here are four points to help you avoid wasting
631.226.2636
time.
1. Know what you want. Have a budget and clear idea of the type of car that’s right for you first. Use online reviews, too. Getting pulled off track will overcomplicate things.
2. Where you shop can be just as important as what you buy. Choose reputable websites and dealerships where vehicle history information is readily available.
3. Get a good handle
on what the car you’re looking at is worth. That way, you’ll know when a bargain looks too good to be true.
4. Find the cars you want and avoid the ones you don’t by starting
your search using vehicle history at Carfax.com. Choose 1-Owner, no reported accidents and more, plus every car there comes with a free Carfax Report.

Finding Hope & Purpose After The Loss Of Your Partner Or Spouse
One of the most traumatic of losses, coping with the passing of a partner or spouse is very difficult and is an acutely unique intimate loss, usually leading to an overwhelming grieving process. But experts say that with thoughtful support, individuals who have experienced the loss of a partner, can find hope and purpose, and learn to navigate holidays and events again that tend to weigh heavily on widows and widowers.
“What’s unique about the loss of a partner or spouse are the secondary losses most experience such as the loss of the person you sleep beside every night, the loss of the person you raise your children with, the loss of income now that your partner has passed on, etc.,” says Grief Coach, Kathryn Monaco Douglas. “And then when you throw in celebrated days like birthdays and holidays, coping with the loss of a partner can be especially
challenging.”
Kathryn Monaco Douglas, who was widowed at a young age, and who now helps widows and widowers through her sought-after support group, Widowed Not Alone, believes that with the right support from the very beginning of their grieving process, individuals who have lost partners do not need to feel as if they are now left to handle life on their own.
In Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum’s recent February 7th workshop, “Finding Hope & Purpose After the Loss of Your Partner or Spouse,” which was developed in partnership with the grief and healing organization COPE, Douglas led individuals through a healing workshop that provided guidance and connection for widows and widowers and shared tips for common trigger days such as celebrated days and holidays.
“Widowhood is a club
that no one wants to belong to, but individuals who participate, are fortunate to have each other,” asserts Douglas, Founder and President of Widowed Not Alone. “At Widowed Not Alone, there is no support group completion date. It consists of an eight week program, but afterwards members continue with us socially. With shared commonalities, participants form lifelong friendships.”
“Our group model supports the bereaved from day one, to help individuals navigate through their loss from the start, whereas most others require grievers to wait up to three months before joining,” emphasized Douglas. “I feel that it’s vital to provide a welcoming community that provides a sense of belonging immediately knowing that mourners who have lost their partner or spouse face emotional and practical concerns and issues right away.”
“Pinelawn’s healing
workshops focus on providing the tools and strategies for healthy coping with the loss of a loved one,” said Justin Locke, President of Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum. “We are privileged to have had Kathryn lead this important workshop and also want to thank COPE, our partner in generating awareness for grief healing services. Pinelawn is proud to make these essential grief workshops available for free to the bereaved.”
“Our community is very fortunate to have had Kathryn leading this important and timely workshop - her work and her wisdom come directly from her own lived experience,” said Adam Rabinovitch, Executive Director of COPE. “We are grateful to Kathryn and to Pinelawn for creating this opportunity for connection and closeness with others - it is a crucial part of the grief experience and healing from the loss of an intimate partner.”
Some ideas and suggestions Douglas shared with participants during the workshop, to help them through the recent Valentine’s Day holiday included, making a plan in advance so that you’re not left alone or without an activity. She also suggested that if you do go out, to take your own car, so that you can leave whenever you’re ready.
Now in its third year, Pinelawn’s online Grief Healing Workshop Series was created during the Covid Pandemic to support those mourning the loss of loved ones, when many remained isolated in their homes. To date, Pinelawn has hosted 25 online grief healing workshops which have assisted over 1,300 individuals coping with grief. Topics covered have included Self-Healing & Resilience Building, Rethinking the Holidays After Loss, Journaling for Life After Loss, Allowing Nature to Hold Us, Healing Through Music, and more.
