Physical activity is one of the best ways to improve overall health and manage stress, yet 1 in 4 U.S. adults are sedentary for more than eight hours each day, which can have negative consequences on physical and mental health. The American Heart Association, the nation’s oldest and largest organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke, established National Walking Day to encourage people to move more throughout their day. This year, in celebration of the organization’s Centennial, communities across the country are invited to gather on Wednesday, April 3 to take a walk and raise awareness of the benefits of

movement.

“The American Heart Association is a relentless force for building healthier communities, one step at a time,” said Evelina Grayver, M.D., President of the American Heart Association on Long Island and Director, Women’s Heart Program, Katz Institute for Women’s Health, Northwell Health’s Central Region. “National Walking Day demonstrates the progress that can happen when people come together and take steps, big or small, to improve the health of their communities.”

Walking is one of the simplest ways to get and stay active. Physical activity such as walking can help reduce stress, improve mood and

Mercy Soup Kitchen Seeking Volunteers

It is an exciting time at the Mercy Soup Kitchen of Wyandanch as it is preparing to launch its new and expanded post Covid operation.

Located in the basement of Trinity Lutheran Church at 17 South 20th Street, the Kitchen served its first meal to hungry people in 1980 and currently serves an average of 108 people per day.

During the pandemic, however, Kitchen procedures had to be modified in order to provide hot, nourishing meals safely and continuously to those in need. Indoor sit-down dining was discontinued and only take-out dining was available.

But today the Kitchen is posing for a postCovid reopening – a reorganizational rebirth of sorts – where Kitchen procedures can finally return to again offering guests dignified, indoor

sit-down dining.

The Kitchen relies heavily on its generous volunteer support and, as such, numerous onsite and off-site volunteer opportunities are now available.

While there are openings for on-site positions, such as helping to prepare and serve meals and to perform various maintenance functions, there are also openings for diverse off-site positions in areas such as finance, grant development and preparation, legal compliance assurance, marketing duties, social media facilitation and fund raising/donation coordination.

Only with the efforts of its volunteers can the Kitchen succeed in its mission to provide food security to those in need. Please consider sharing some of your time and talents with the Kitchen to make this happen. We invite you to join our team.

Legislator Donnelly Attends Deer Park FD Juniors Installation Honors New National Honor Society Members

Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park), a four-decade decorated member of the Deer Park Fire Department (DPFD) and a retired FDNY Lieutenant, joined DPFD Chief Robert Macaluso and his fellow DPFD members

on Monday, February 12 at the installation of DPFD Juniors. At the ceremony, he also recognized 12 of the new volunteers for their induction into the Deer Park High School Chapter of the National Honor Society. Held at DPFD headquarters

on Lake Avenue, 27 Junior Firefighters and EMS personnel were installed. The 12 members of the Juniors Program who were inducted into the National Honor Society in December were presented with Suffolk County Certificates of

Disaster Loan Outreach Center in Babylon. The center is located at Babylon Town Hall and will assist constituents from across the Fourth Senatorial District who suffered losses as a result of the January 9-10, 2024 storm that impacted the region with heavy rain, high winds, and coastal flooding. Representatives of the SBA will assist eligible residents and businesses in Suffolk and Nassau

Counties who suffered economic losses as a result of the storm to apply for low-interest loans. Those who can apply include businesses, homeowners, renters, and private nonprofit organizations. They must be in a declared disaster area and meet other eligibility criteria

Senator Martinez Joins Effort To Provide Tax Assistance

Journalists who have been looking for something good to report on may soon be able to turn the lens on themselves as the New York State Senate advances tax credits to local news outlets for the employment of community-oriented news journalists in its One-House budget proposal.

If included in the 2024 New York State budget, the Local Journalism Sustainability Act, sponsored by Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal and co-sponsored by Senator Monica R. Martinez, would provide news organizations with a 50% refundable tax credit against the first $50,000 of each newsroom employee’s salary, up to $200,000 per outlet. This benefit would be limited to print and online newspapers and broadcasters with 100 employees or fewer that cover local community news.

“Local journalists tell the stories of America’s

communities,” said Senator Martinez. “They highlight the achievements of our neighbors, the successes of our school teams, and the efforts of our public officials. Unfortunately, with the contraction of local media over the past decade, these stories are being lost, and in their absence, misunderstanding and mistrust have taken hold. These narratives unite us, and without them, we will continue to drift further apart.”

According to a study issued by the Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications at Northwestern University, an average of 2.5 local newspapers per week ceased operations in 2023. This has resulted in over half of all U.S. counties now having limited access to reliable local news, and more than 200 counties are considered “news deserts.” In New York

Adventureland Announces

Details of Multi-Year, $10 Million Redevelopment Plan & New Rides

Adventureland has announced the details of its multi-year, five-phase $10 million redevelopment plan of Long Island’s most popular amusement park, as well as a new partnership with Catholic Health. This marks one of the biggest investment projects in the park’s 62-year history since the installation of the ride called ‘Turbulence’ in 2015, which cost $5 million.

The most visible and immediate change is the addition of two new rides for the upcoming 2024 season, which include the ‘Jr. Pirate Ship Ride’ and ‘Moon Chaser.’

The second phase involves the addition of a first-of-its-kind custom-made ride called ‘Wave Twister,’ which is expected to open in time for the spring 2025 season. There are at least two more planned rides that are to be added over the next three phases. These will be the first new rides since the addition of the ‘FireBall’ in 2022, which was a $2 million investment.

Adventureland estimates that by the end of the fifth phase, there will be a 10% growth in employment to support the new ‘Legacy Corner’ section, which is expected to be completed in 2028.

Catholic Health Partnership

Catholic Health is sponsoring the main entrance and the City Hall Building, which has now been renamed the Catholic Health Wellness Center. This area is home to ‘Guest Relations,’ ‘First Aid,’ and the ‘Lost and Found.’

Another addition is a blue line throughout Adventureland that will direct guests from anywhere in the park to the Catholic Health Wellness Center. Catholic Health will also have a presence in the park during family-friendly events like the ‘Egg Scramble’ and ‘Pumpkin Park’. Catholic Health will also feature a variety of health-focused educational programs for park guests throughout the season.

Legacy Corner

A large part of the investment will be the creation of the ‘Legacy Corner,’ which will be on the front southeast side of the park about a little over an acre in size. In addition to at least four new rides, brand-new concession stands, restrooms, and other amenities will be constructed. Annually, Adventureland hires over 650 part-time employees. The full five-phase project is expected to be completed by 2028.

Retired Rides

In the weeks leading up to its 2024 season opening, Adventureland announced the retirement of the ‘Log Flume,’ ‘Pirate Ship’ ride and ‘Spinning Cars’ to make way for new rides.

New Rides

The ‘Jr. Pirate Ship’ ride is geared towards—but not limited to—children who are from 5-to-8 years old. It is similar to the larger scale ‘Pirate Ship’ ride which was recently removed to make room for the ‘Moon Chaser.’ The ‘Moon Chaser’ is a 45' tall galaxythemed thrill ride which spins, twists, dips, and inverts riders. This ride is unique because it is currently the only one in the park that goes upside down. This ride is geared towards children who are 11 years old or older. The second phase will introduce the new ride— ‘Wave Twister.’ This is a first-of-itskind ride that was custom built for Adventureland. The ‘Wave Twister’ is a family ride. It was made in Switzerland by RES Rides.
