DECA Team Puts On Strong Performance At Regionals

In a strong performance, 73 Deer Park High School students recently participated in DECA’s Suffolk County Regional Competition, competing against over 900 students from 26 other schools. A total of 34 Deer Park students earned trophies while another 11 were given honorable mention designation.

Jaidyn Schabe took first place in Principles of Business Management. Winning second place were Jade Griffin (Apparel and Accessories Marketing); Shujana Aurin and Katia Papailler (Hospitality Services Team); and Sasha Khellawan and Brandon Lanaro (Buying and Merchandising Team).

Finishing in third place were Shubat Alam and Adib Shaikh (Travel and Tourism Team); and Ayush Manchanda and Brett Patrick (Hospitality Services Team).

The Charity of the Month for March is Canine Companions®

Canine

Companions

is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people by providing highly trained service dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. They proudly o er their support services free of charge to recipients.

Clients come to Canine Companions because of their reputation, the quality of their dogs, the experience of their training sta and the desire to lead a life with greater independence. The organization is proud to have various chapters and training centers across our nation, with their Northeast Region (Long Island Chapter) located right here on Long Island, in Medford.

Did you know this non-profit runs a Veterans Initiative™? Through this initiative they place service dogs with veterans. Canine Companions’ expertly trained service dogs can perform physical tasks to enhance independence including opening doors, picking up prosthetics and alerting a veteran with hearing loss to important sounds in their environment. With the increase in veterans facing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Canine Companions launched a program in 2018 to directly place service dogs with veterans with PTSD. Dogs are trained to identify each veteran’s unique stressors and perform tasks that directly disrupt escalation of symptoms, thus enhancing their quality of life. The dog supports their handler in crowded public situations by creating barriers and distance that might provoke anxiety for individuals with PTSD. Additional tasks such as nightmare interruption, turning on lights and retrieving items are taught to support veterans’ daily lives.

“When I see a veteran with a Canine Companions service dog, it still gives me goosebumps,” said Colonel E. David Woycik Jr., a highly decorated retired Army O cer and an active Canine Companions Board Member. “I see the satisfaction these veterans get...

the fulfillment of their lives through these dogs. The service dogs are not just partners, they are their right hand, their left hand, their legs and more. We can’t pay the veterans back enough, and I’m proud to be part of an organization serving them.”

Mr. Woycik helped organize a Veterans Day event, Salute Independence , which awards local veterans who continue to serve their communities.

Thanks to his tireless work, this annual event has raised more than $500,000 in total so far to support the organization’s Veterans Initiative™.

Looking to make a di erence? You can become a Puppy Raiser with the Long Island Chapter today. Canine Companions volunteer puppy raisers provide specially-bred puppies a safe home, take them to obedience classes, serve up a healthy diet, provide socialization opportunities and give lots of love. Volunteers are warmly welcomed in other capacities as well, such as Front Desk Reception, General O ce Support, Puppy Transporter and Event Support, amongst other fields. Without loyal volunteers, this organization couldn’t fulfill their mission, so they are beyond grateful for each individual that gives their time and e orts to help.

BOE Honors Outstanding Track Athlete Alex Geosits

At the Deer Park School District Board of Education’s Jan. 24 meeting, Deer Park High School junior Alex Geosits was honored for finishing in first place in both the 300-meter and 600-meter races at the Molloy Stanner Games, held on Jan. 15 at The Armory in New York City. Her incredible day earned her the Outstanding Individual Performer award.

“Alex, we are so proud of you and your accomplishments,” board of education President Donna Marie Elliott said.

“Many years ago, I was the track coach, so I know how much goes into this,” Superintendent James Cummings said. “Alex was honored as the most outstanding individual athlete, which is incredible considering there are hundreds of runners at these events. She was presented with the Karina

Vetrano Memorial Plaque by Karina’s father. Karina tragically lost her life six years ago and was an avid track athlete. Mr. Vetrano was so pleased to hand the award to such a deserving and humble person as Alex.”

Legislator Tom Donnelly, a Deer Park alumnus who ran track for the high school

himself, was in attendance to laud Geosits.

“Alex really makes our community shine, there’s no better way to say it,” Donnelly said. “It’s a pretty significant feat to run two races in that period of time at a really big tournament.”

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc. (www.pal-o-mine.org, Islandia, NY), a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, announced that it will holding an art show and auction on Thursday, May 4th, 2023 from 5:30 PM–8:30 PM at its facilities located at 829 Old Nichols Rd, Islandia, NY 11749. The Stable Spirits Art Show and Auction Fundraiser will feature the artwork of local artists of all ages and art mediums and styles. In addition to the art show and auction, the event will include a selection of wines from local vineyards paired with small bites by Sommelier Jun Xi Chen, assisted by restaurant professionals and fellow Culinary Institute of

America graduate, Megan Henne. Event ticket prices are $60.

“We are very excited to give local artists an opportunity to show their work, while also helping Pal-O-Mine raise funds for our new 2,000 square foot educational center, which will expand our onsite therapy and vocational services,” said Pal-O-Mine founder and CEO Lisa Gatti. Under the guidance of Splashes of Hope artists, attendees will also participate in an interactive mural process creating art to hang in the new center.

Artists will be notified of acceptance by email on March 17th, 2023. Artists must agree to donate 20% of each sale made at the event to Pal-O-Mine and donate one piece of art to Pal-O-Mine for use in future fundraisers.

Mike’s Team Up For Second Consecutive Day Of Giving

Special Olympics

New York is pleased to announce that 41 Jersey Mike’s Subs locations around the state will participate in the Day and Month of Giving campaigns for the second consecutive year.

During March, customers can donate to Special Olympics NY at participating Jersey Mike’s restaurants. The campaign culminates with a Day of Giving on Wednesday, March 29, when local Jersey Mike’s restaurants will give 100 percent of the day’s sales to the athletes of Special Olympics NY.

“I would like to extend a personal invitation to you and your family to visit Jersey Mike’s Subs throughout the month of March, and especially on Day of Giving when 100 percent of sales – every penny – goes to help a great local cause,” said Peter Cancro, Jersey Mike’s founder and CEO.

“Jersey Mike’s is a true champion of champions. Every dollar donated during the Month of Giving –and every dollar spent at partner locations March 29 – will help change lives for people with intellectual differences,” said Special Olympics New York President & CEO Stacey Hengsterman.

South Shore Audubon Offers Scholarships

The South Shore Audubon Society has begun accepting applications for two $1000 Environmental Scholarships. The scholarships will be awarded to college juniors, seniors, or graduate students earning a degree in areas of biological or environmental science, or sustainable and renewable energy .

For the Evelyn and Jerry Bishop Environmental Scholarship, applicants must be residents of one of the areas listed at www. ssaudubon.org/areas-weserve.asp and/or attend a college in Nassau or Suffolk County.

For the Jay Koolpix, Environmental Scholarship, applicants must be residents

of Nassau County and/or attend a college in Nassau or Suffolk County.

May 31,2023 is the deadline for submission of applications. Completed applications include a brief explanation of the reason for applying for the scholarship and the plan to use the money, a copy of the most recent transcript

SADD Club Promotes Importance Of Kindness

Deer Park High School’s SADD Club recently hosted Kindness Week, celebrating the many ways that students can become

a positive influence in each other’s lives. The week culminated in a showcase in the main lobby, where SADD members greeted

students by handing out information on the importance of kindness and how to spread kindness to both friends and strangers at the school. Students received encouraging notes, bookmarks and a list of 50 ways to participate in a random act of kindness in their daily lives.

“A small and random gesture of kindness can go a long way in making someone’s day,” SADD Club president David Perez said.
