Two Track Athletes From Deer Park High School Earn County Titles

Deer Park High School girls indoor track athletes Alex Geosits and Natalia Lee were named county champions in the 600-meter run and triple jump, respectively, at the Section XI Girls Small School Championships, held on Feb. 4 at Suffolk

County Community College in Brentwood.

Lee, a senior, jumped a 16-inch personal best 35-5.25 on her first jump to set the tone for winning her first county championship and moving to eighth overall in the triple jump in Section 11.

She also placed eighth in the 300-meter run.

Top-ranked Geosits, a junior, also secured her first ever title by convincingly winning the 600-meter run. Despite battling illness, she managed to not only win but dominate the race.

Both athletes moved on to the state qualifier meet. The Deer Park girls track and field team as a whole finished in ninth overall in the county, with only five points separating fifth from ninth. Freshman Vanessa Cayea hit a personal best in the high jump (an event

ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE RESOURCE CENTER 2023 Memory Walk And Spring Festival

The Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center (ADRC) will host its Annual Memory Walk and Spring Festival at Marjorie R. Post Community Park, 451 Unqua Road, Massapequa, NY on Saturday, April 22, 2023. The walk will begin with registration at 8:30 am, a light breakfast, and opening ceremony. The Memory Walk and Spring Festival is being held on Earth Day and will have activities celebrating the planet as well as a Memory Tree to honor loved ones, archery activities, music, photos, food, beverages and more! In addition, many other community organizations are joining us and will be sharing resources with participants. This is an event you do not want to miss.

Each year, the

Memory Walk serves to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia, honor and remember those impacted by the disease, and raise funds for ADRC to continue to provide support and services to families on Long Island. All funds raised stay on Long Island and are put right back into serving local families impacted by the disease.

It is $25 per person to participate and Children 12 and under are FREE. Consider creating a Team and having friends and colleagues join you in raising funds and awareness. Canine Companions is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained service dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. Independence shouldn’t be limited to those who look or live a certain way, so they are proud to provide their dogs and support services free of charge to recipients.

Clients come to Canine Companions because of their reputation, the quality of their dogs, the experience of their training sta and the desire to lead a life with greater independence. The organization is proud to have various chapters and training centers across our nation that operate o of these six core values:

Canine Companions uses Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers and crosses of these two breeds. Most of their dogs come from their selective breeding program, but occasionally donated puppies are accepted if they meet the strict qualification requirements. Their puppies are raised by volunteers who selflessly take them to classes that teach them basic obedience and house manners. When

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) is pleased to again join Long Island Cares and help it “rain food for cats and dogs” by hosting a pet food drive now through the end of May.

the puppies are old enough to enter their professional training program, they head to one of their six regional training centers, located in Northern California, Southern California, Texas, Ohio, New York and Florida.

The organization typically places between 325 and 375 service dogs per year. Once a dog has completed professional training, it is ready to be matched with a person with disabilities. The match is made at one of their regional training centers during Team Training, a two-week group class.

During Team Training, students learn to manage the service dog’s behavior, to direct the dog to respond to commands it has learned and to assume responsibility for maintaining the health and well-being of the dog.

Each dog can really make all the di erence in the life of its new partner.

A Canine Companions service dog can not only open doors, pick up dropped items, turn on the lights and alert its partner of important sounds, but they can also increase confidence and independence.

Legislator Donnelly’s district office is serving as a drop-off location for the 12th Legislative Pet Food Drive where much-needed pet food and supplies will be collected to benefit Baxter’s Pet Pantry of Long Island Cares (www.licares. org). In previous years, constituents of the 17th Legislative District have

All donations go directly to Baxter’s Pantry. While 5 and 10 pound bags of dog and cat food, canned food, kitty litter and new pet toys are most needed, all pet nourishments are welcome including food for hamsters, fish, birds and ferrets.

Items may be dropped off at Legislator Donnelly’s District Office, located at 130 West Jericho Turnpike in Huntington Station, Monday through Thursday between the hours of 9 am and 4 pm until May 31. As per health code

“Hard times impact all members of the family, including our animal companions,” said Legislator Donnelly. “Families shouldn’t have to decide between feeding themselves and feeding their beloved pets. I am happy to partner with Long Island cares again on this important and much needed cause.”

May Moore Primary School Celebrates Lunar New Year

While the name of the event may be a little different, the beloved annual Lunar New Year celebration at Deer Park’s May Moore Primary School featured the familiar

sight and sound of red-clad first graders banging drums and carrying paper dragons as they paraded through the halls for an audience of pre-K, kindergarten and

second grade students.

“Our students and staff were very excited to celebrate the year of the Rabbit,” Principal Tammy Alcalde said. “The festival

had traditionally been referred to as Chinese New Year, but as this event is not only celebrated in China but in several other countries as well, the term Lunar New

Year is more appropriate.”

This year, the family of one of May Moore’s students generously donated food from their restaurant for the first graders to enjoy after

the parade. The students had an opportunity to eat with chopsticks and were able to sample lo mein, fried rice and spring rolls.

No Kid Hungry Awards $20,000 To The American Academy Of Pediatrics New York Chapter 2 To Combat Child Hunger On Long Island

No Kid Hungry announced that it has awarded $20,000 to the American Academy of Pediatrics New York Chapter 2 to train Long Island pediatricians on how to screen for the effects of food insecurity and connect families in need with food assistance.

One in 7 children face hunger in New York. As trusted family confidants, pediatricians have unique insight into the lives of children and families. In their first five years, the average child visits a pediatrician 20 times.

The American Academy of Pediatrics New York Chapter 2 will use these trainings to develop and implement a screening tool for food insecurity to triage all

pediatric patients. The chapter will host nutrition workshops for parents and patients as well as identify family advisors to support and advocate for patients who are facing food insecurity.

“There is no voice that families trust more than their pediatrician. We are so proud to be partnering with the American Academy of Pediatrics here in New York to mobilize doctors in the fight against child hunger,” said Rachel Sabella, Director of No Kid Hungry New York. “Pediatricians are usually the first to notice a change in a child’s health. This additional training will help them screen children for signs of food insecurity and provide families

with more resources to secure help.”

“Nutrition plays a critical role in children’s overall health and development, and pediatricians are here to partner with families to ensure they have access to healthy food,” said Moira Szliagyi, MD, PhD, FAAP, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Recently highlighted in the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition and Health, this grant is part of a national effort to provide pediatricians with the additional training needed to screen for food insecurity. No Kid Hungry will provide and offer three different learning models to pediatricians based on each

physician’s time capacity and work schedule. Pediatricians will be able to refer patients’ families to grocery benefits like SNAP and WIC, as well as other local and state resources for families through these learning models, which are the following:

A Self-Driven Online Learning Site called PediaLink will offer training materials that physicians can use to learn more about screening and referrals on their own time. An Interactive Training Model lets pediatricians receive training through a self-directive, interactive series of programs.

A Live Virtual Training Model called the “Extension for Community Health Outcomes”

will enable physicians to receive hands-on training.

Creating Healing Mandalas In The Circle Of Life

Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum is excited to host our first-ever in-person grief healing art workshop on Saturday, March 4th with Deborah Adler, MA, ATR-BC, LCAT Registered, Board Certified and Licensed Art Therapist Session 1: 5pm - 6:15pm Session 2: 7pm - 8:15pm!

Mandala is a Sanskrit word that means “Circle.” Mandala-making is a common Art Therapy method often used for insight, healing and selfexpression. It is another way to practice mindfulness. Circles often symbolize the connectedness we have with

all people, including our lost loved ones. Licensed Art Psychotherapist, Deborah Adler, will lead you into creating your very own mandala allowing you to explore your feelings whether they reflect grief, sadness, inspiration or hope. No artistic skill or experience is required.

Get creative, allow your mind to wander and enjoy the process while you design your art piece with colors, images and symbols that inspire you to reflect on your loved one. There will be dedicated time following the art experience to share mandalas and process any

feelings and emotions that came up for you.

South Shore Audubon Offers Scholarships

The South Shore Audubon Society has begun accepting applications for two $1000 Environmental

Scholarships. The scholarships will be awarded to college juniors, seniors, or graduate students earning a

degree in areas of biological or environmental science, or sustainable and renewable energy .

For the Evelyn and Jerry Bishop Environmental Scholarship, applicants must be residents of one of the areas listed at www. ssaudubon.org/areas-weserve.asp and/or attend a college in Nassau or Suffolk County.

For the Jay Koolpix, Environmental Scholarship, applicants must be residents of Nassau County and/or attend a college in Nassau or Suffolk County.

May 31,2023 is the deadline for submission of applications. Completed applications include a brief explanation of the reason for applying for the scholarship and the plan to use the money, a copy of the most recent transcript of grades, and at least one letter of recommendation. Applicants may apply for both scholarships but cannot be awarded more than one.

As a real estate broker, I knew that the boom years of 2020 and 2021 wouldn’t last forever. For two years, houses for sale often had multiple offers before they were ever listed. Many homes went for above the asking price; sometimes well above the asking price.

But, as the saying goes, “All good things must come to an end.” Today, interest rates are more than double what they were a few years ago, home sellers aren’t leaving their 3% mortgage rates, and home buyers are waiting for more homes to hit the market and for interest rates to come down.

What do we do when business, and life, suddenly change directions? Some people put their heads in the sand and wait for everything to blow past them; others run to find a safe spot. What about the ones who stand

and face the obstacle in front of them? Often, they are the winners.

In business, when a good economy turns bad, companies will abandon their projects, lay off employees, and slash expenses. Smaller companies may go out of business because they didn’t prepare for the downturn, and they ran out of money. Look at the stores in town; that will tell you who planned

for a weaker economy and who failed to plan.

Tough times bring stress, anxiety, and tough decisions; they also bring opportunities for the people and businesses that prepare for them. Prices for many items will come down because companies have fewer customers buying their products (think of everything from home appliances to cars). Competitors will go out of business, and their customers will look for new places to spend their money. The same is true for vendors and suppliers.

What is your plan when things don’t go your way? Will you stand and fight while looking for opportunities, or will you wait for everything to blow over? I hope you decide to fight. We need stronger small businesses in our community, and we need our residents to support them along the way.
