This organization also runs a program called Heart & Sole. This is their middle school program that meets the unique needs of girls in 6th-8th grade. Heart & Sole takes girls as a whole into consideration body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection - in a positive and structured space, where participants can learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy and stregthen connections. Running is incorporated into each lesson to encourage physical wellness. These girls also prepare for a celebratory 5K event at the end of the program. The upcoming spring season

PAWS OF WAR - Being deployed to Afghanistan can be dangerous and stressful for our service members. Some of these service members rescue stray dogs and befriend them. When it’s time to head back to the United States, the last thing they can think of is leaving the dog behind to fend for itself. One soldier, Sgt. Dominick, is desperate to bring his dog, Jonsey, back home with him. In order for Paws of War to be successful at bringing a dog back to America from Afghanistan, they work with Nowzad, the only official animal shelter in Afghanistan, and get financial support from public donations. There’s a lot that goes into bringing a dog back to the U.S., including quarantine, all of which comes at a high cost. They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event.

Deer Park’s Dress For Success Introduces Young Students To Careers

Deer Park’s Dress for Success, recently held on two separate days at John Quincy Adams and May Moore primary schools, introduced career exploration to the district’s youngest students while stressing the importance of working hard in order to achieve academic and career goals. The initiative was prepared by the district in compliance with the state’s Social Emotional Learning Benchmarks. A lesson plan, video and assignment were provided to the students to help connect educational achievement and a strong work ethic with career success. Kindergartners through second graders were encouraged to dress
for the career that they want, and during lunch periods, students were able to pose with career props in a mini photoshoot. Districtwide counselor Angeline Ramos, who organized the Dress for Success initiative, created a puppet video for the students to view that showed the progression of two characters, HardWorking Harry and LaidBack Larry, throughout different stages of their life. Throughout each stage, Harry stressed the importance of studying, doing homework and working hard towards his goal of becoming a doctor. Larry did the complete opposite and pushed everything off. The video
started off in elementary school and ended with Harry obtaining his career as an adult while Larry remained regretful that he didn’t work as hard. “My absolute favorite part of Dress for Success was when students told me that they wanted to be like Hard-Working Harry rather than Laid-back Larry,” said Ramos. “I was happy to see that students made the connection of working hard. I also loved seeing the creativity of MAY MOORE PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS - May Moore Primary School everyone’s outfits. None of students were introduced to career exploration at Dress for Success. SEVENTH GRADERS DEVELOP BOARD GAMES - Seventh graders in Cindy Adriaenssens’ family and consumer science classes at Deer Park’s Robert Frost Middle School recently created educational board games as a team-building activity. Phone Scam Attempts On The Rise With a recent uptick in the number of reported phone scam attempts, PSEG Long Island again urges residents and business owners to make themselves aware of the tactics scammers use to try to steal their money. Phone scammers have become more prolific and sophisticated in recent years. In many cases, the scammers can modify their
caller ID to read “PSEG Long Island.” More than 6,600 calls were reported to PSEG Long Island in 2019, up from 4,088 scam calls reported in 2018. While recent weeks have seen an increase in the number of scam calls, PSEG Long Island’s awareness campaigns appear to have made customers more alert. In 2015, 8.2% of the total number of reported
calls resulted in customers losing their money. Since 2018, that number is down to 5%. “Phone scammers want their targets to panic so they don’t think clearly. If you receive a call about a past-due bill, don’t panic. Look for signs that it may not be legitimate, such as a request for a specific payment type or an imminent threat of
disconnection,” said Rick Walden, vice president of customer operations, PSEG Long Island. “Our representatives will never demand immediate payment and, though we offer a variety of payment options, they do not include pre-paid debit cards or bitcoin. Additionally, if a customer is scheduled for disconnection due to nonpayment, they will
receive written notice on their bill at least 10 days in advance.” What to look out for You receive a call from what looks like PSEG Long Island on your caller ID. The caller threatens to shut off your service and demands an immediate payment by pre-paid card, wire transfer or bitcoin. The caller informs you that you require a
new meter and demands a deposit before the installation can occur. You’re given a phone number to call back that, when called, may sound similar to PSEG Long Island’s automated call system. PSEG Long Island will never ask for a pre-paid card, wire transfer or bitcoin. Scammers ask for

Suffolk County Legislator Susan A. Berland (D-Dix Hills) honored Half Hollow Hills bus driver Janie Lozano and Signal Hill Elementary School student Hunter Javeline for their quick actions that ensured the safety of the students aboard a bus driven by Lozano when it caught fire. The school bus was en route to Signal Hill Elementary School when Lozano noticed a “ball of
fire” emitting from the bus in the rearview mirror. She quickly stopped the bus and initiated its orderly evacuation, which was aided by Javeline, who Lozano indicated was integral in the students’ safe departure from the bus. “It was my privilege to recognize Janie and Hunter for the heroism they exhibited,” said Suffolk County Legislator Susan A. Berland. “As
someone who drove a bus for ten years, I know that the safety of passengers is paramount in the mind of a bus driver. Janie’s actions were nothing short of courageous and Hunter’s assistance in the evacuation was remarkable and brave. They are testaments to the excellence that is typical of the employees and students of the Half Hollow Hills Central School District.”
