and, oh yeah, actual missed calls and voicemails, I suppose the easiest course of action for some is to simply “ignore all” and move on. Too bad there are those of us on the receiving end of that dismissive approach – people who, for all our technology and gadgets, actually yearn for that human connection in the form of a personal acknowledgement that said communication was received, processed, appreciated for what it was worth and responded to appropriately. In a timely manner.

MUSIC’S PLACE IN THE DIGITAL AGE I have a deeply ingrained love for music, particularly listening to new things and looking further into the artists I find interesting. Unfortunately, what I have noticed as a high school freshman is that I often struggle to find people to share discoveries with who are willing to explore new musical grounds. The general trend seems to be that young people don’t recognize music as a main focal point in their lives like past generations have. Instead, the idea of immersing oneself in this highly spiritual, universal experience is being practiced less, which is evidenced by many of my peers. On countless occasions, my parents have recounted their time in high school with stories that can all be drawn back to a mutual appreciation for music.

When people my age find themselves without something to talk about, discussion about a new favorite tune is hardly ever even considered. It is easier to simply default to social media or other means of digital distraction to break the tension. There is also an astounding lack of devotion to artists nowadays. With the advent of streaming services like Pandora and Spotify, individual songs are played on stations created by the user. Allowing unfavorable songs to be skipped and offering unlimited access to an endless list of tracks gives young people no reason to purchase a musician’s entire

album. To constantly browse through fragments of what is really a large cohesive work does a great disservice to the listener. In order to allow yourself to grow with the artist, you must see the whole picture. This develops a story that can be interpreted differently for anyone and is what should drive people to become engrossed in other similar compositions. A fast paced society is creating a youth who undervalue music and cannot fully appreciate it. We are neglecting many opportunities for expanding our knowledge of the world of music and are failing to forge lasting bonds with others within it. While this may be very disheartening, popular culture can embrace new ideas very rapidly, providing some hope for fully inviting music into our lives.

Volunteers Needed Family & Children’s Association, Long Island’s leading human care agency is seeking volunteers for its new Friendly Visitors program set to begin in May. Family & Children’s Association serves nearly 9,000 seniors each year providing case management, financial counseling, health insurance counseling and other support services. They will provide training and on-going support to volunteers enabling them to provide companionship and once-a-week visitation to a local, homebound senior. inception of integration and the ongoing work she does through the “Ruby Bridges Foundation” to promote the values of tolerance, respect and appreciation of differences, further deepened their understanding of all that she has come to represent. Other activities included learning about Jackie Robinson and using Smart Boards to catch videos of his historic moments at bat. Their favorite new vocabulary word of the week was “persevere” – the idea of continuing to try at something, even when it seems the hardest, really seemed to appeal to the youngsters. They took part in an exercise writing and drawing pictures about a time they have had to persevere while learning or doing something and the surprising answers that came from the these young minds were inspiring

indeed. Fifth graders studied the Civil Rights Movement and integral figures such as Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rosa Parks. They particularly focused on all of the positive themes that Dr. King stressed, promoting that peace and love will conquer all negativity and violence. The students wrote about their own dreams for their futures…for themselves, their family, their school and the world. They also did mini-projects on what the word “peace” means to them and ways that they feel they can promote it in their own environment. Projects, essays and artwork are on display for all students and visitors at SSCM and students came home to their families with prayers of peace for the month, something we could all use a little more of every month of the year!

On January 14th the St. John the Baptist D.H.S. Jazz Ensemble had the great opportunity of playing with Jazz Musician Glenn Drewes. Mr. Drewes, a West Babylon native, eagerly shared his musical talent with our students. Mr. Drewes taught a master class to the students in the Jazz Ensemble led by Performing Arts Department Chair Mr. Chris Donohue. Mr. Donohue has worked together with Mr. Drewes doing clinics and workshops at Nassau Community College, Adelphi, and SUNY Purchase for their Jazz Programs. They have also have done workshops together at High Schools around Long Island

He also considered Old Dominion and Boston College, but visits to UD’s Newark campus – the homecoming game last fall and an official visit last month – solidified his choice. “I like the campus, the fun environment, the

atmosphere and setting, and all of the coaches I talked to,” Thompson said. “I’m very excited and can’t wait to go there, play football and get a great education.” Older brother Aaron plays football closer to home at Stony Brook, where he is a sophomore defensive lineman. Black History Month, or National African American History Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in U.S. history. Students in every grade at Saints Cyril and Methodius (SSCM) School in Deer Park kicked off the start of the month by doing just that. Second graders read stories on the life and times of Martin Luther King, Jr., then wrote up passages about how each of them can help to make the world a more peaceful place. Thoughts from these 7 and 8 year-olds included everything from not being afraid to take the first step to make a new friend to ending violence.
