Children will enjoy a large number of additional

activities and “freebies,” including face painting, photo booth, balloon animals, popcorn, cotton candy, train tables, water ice samples, and an 8 ½ foot snake and other animals to touch. Admission is $5 per person and free for ages 2 and younger and includes everything listed. Ever year the fun-filled All Kids Fair offers exciting educational and health activities to interest kids and their families. The Fair

offers choices for toddlers through high school, including kids who have special needs or are gifted. Over 80 exhibitor spaces and many classes provide valuable information. Exhibitors include schools, camps, after school activities, birthday party ideas, and college planning. Some of the many classes that children can share with their parents and grandparents are drama, robots and a Boomers!

these children. Upon sponsorship, you will receive a photo and bio of the child you chose to sponsor. You will be able to write letters or send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages! Kevin and his wife often travel to Meru to visit the orphanage and welcome sponsors to travel along to meet firsthand the child they sponsor. Another way you can become involved is by hosting a craft fair right here on Long Island to sell Kenyan crafts made by the Meru Women’s Collective. You will be provided with the goods, and all the profits generated will go back to the children at the orphanage. Contact Kevin Mann for more information. On Febraury 18th, Hope Children’s Fund will host its first Gala at East Wind in Wading River! All are welcome to attend and enjoy a night out to support this charity and its cause. The Gala will include dinner, a unique art auction, music by the band X-Sessions and a possible Skype call with the children at their orphanage in Meru. Contact Kevin Mann to purchase your tickets now ($200/person) and be a part of something that truly matters!

Centro Cultural Hispano ~ Oyster Bay www.cchoben.org This non-profit works towards the educational, social and economic development of the Hispanic community of Oyster Bay, East Norwich and surrounding areas. They are seeking volunteers to help students at their after-school program from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in Oyster Bay. For most of these students, English is not the first language spoken at home and, as a result, their parents do not understand English sufficiently enough to help them with their schoolwork. Caring For Older Adults (NAPSI)—With a growing aging population, the amount of family caregivers in the United States is also on the rise. There are nearly 45 million people who serve as a caregiver for a family member or friend who is 50 or older. Serving as a caregiver can be rewarding but difficult. Often, caregivers are unaware of local aging resources that might be able to assist them. The Eldercare Locator is a free, public service that connects older adults and caregivers to information about local resources and services such as meal delivery

programs, transportation options, home modification assistance and in-home support services. Additionally, caregivers can find out about support groups in their community and programs that offer a break from caregiving responsibilities. The Eldercare Locator also has free informational brochures for older adults and caregivers on topics such as medication management, preventing falls in the home, transportation options, avoiding financial exploitation, and brain health. All brochures can be ordered

by calling 800-677-1116 or downloaded online at www. eldercare.gov. If you are a caregiver who is seeking information about caring for your loved one and you want to learn about community resources that may be able to assist, call the Eldercare Locator at 800-6771116 or visit www.eldercare. gov. The Eldercare Locator is a public service of the U.S. Administration on Aging and is administered by the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging.

Cracking the Classics “Do not read, as children do, to amuse yourself; or, like the ambitious, for the purpose of instruction. No, read in order to live.” ~ Gustave Flaubert Winter being one of those seasons best suited for indoor activities, I have recently taken up the hobby of reading; well, by taken up, I mean I have ordered several selections with the intent of reading them (hopefully) before spring arrives. I always say I want to read at least one book a month; generally, this amounts to a single magazine, perhaps a chapter or two of a cast-aside novel from several years ago… rarely do I seem to make any considerable progress in this literary department. This year, on New Year’s Day in fact, I made it my mission to use one of my holiday gift cards to order a handful of the “classics” - The Wind in

the Willows, Walden, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, and Wuthering Heights - a veritable collection straight from the pages of an old English department syllabus. Some, I had read bits and pieces of years ago; others, I had always wanted to peruse more thoroughly, but had never taken the opportunity to dive into. Of course, nearly six weeks later, and I have yet to make it past the introduction to The Wind in the Willows. An hour a night, I told myself. Simple. Just make it a habit, and the pages will fly by, I theorized. This is recreational reading - no obligation, no required deadline. Read at your leisure, because you want to. And still, somehow, the pile of books remains virtually untouched. Perhaps I should join a book club. Maybe I need the structure, the faux “assignment” to push me

along. Nightly chapter summaries, on the teacher’s desk by morning! But, in all seriousness, it is truly remarkable how difficult we find the task of simply enriching our lives in a cultural sense. Binge a series on Netflix over the course of a few days? Not a problem. Spend hours mindlessly browsing social media? Done. Priorities, indeed. As much as I never thought I would wish for winter to prolong, I am somewhat glad that another month remains to tackle this self-imposed task. Five weeks, to be precise. One book per week or so. Doable? Sure, with the proper focus. Such is the extent of my winter “To Do” list. Not a bad way to spend an evening. Don’t worry, dear readers, you shall have a full report of my progress - or lack thereof by next month. {Side note: they still make Cliff Notes, right?}

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance to succeed. Sleep Better, Stress Less (NAPSI)-Here’s eyeopening news: Recently published research from Oklahoma State University suggests that improving quality of sleep not only reduces stress, but also helps us manage everyday

stress. “When you’re stressed and tired, every aspect of your life is affected,” says lifestyle expert and spokesperson for the Better Sleep Council, Lissa Coffey. “Controlling stress

and getting a good night’s rest start with evaluating your lifestyle.” Dr. Douglas MacKay, N.D., vice president, scientific and regulatory affairs, Council for Responsible Nutrition,

agrees: “Eating a healthy diet, taking vitamins and other supplements, exercising regularly and getting adequate amounts of sleep are all part of a healthy lifestyle.” Here are more tips to

help you sleep better and stress less: 1. Eat a well-balanced diet. 2. Take your vitamins, including a daily multivitamin. Ask your doctor about other

supplements, like valerian, for healthy sleep. 3. Evaluate your mattress--consider replacing it if it’s five to seven years old or older.

A Creative Clue the live performance. The cast included Nolan Maggio as Wadsworth, Tori DiTomasso as Mrs. Peacock, Michael Colombo as Colonel Mustard, Saraphina Morano as Mrs. White, Evan Hytner as Professor Plum, Madi Steddick as Miss Scarlet, Aashish Joshi as Mr. Green and Alexa Bellotti as Yvette. The production also included mug shots of each character on display in the lobby, and participation cards for the audience to help them solve the

murders. The Deer Park Arts Council provided a step and repeat banner in the lobby, giving the evening the feel of a red carpet cinema event. “Adapting a movie transcript for the stage was a difficult task,” said Wallace. “The students were so enthusiastic about developing such rich and iconic characters, and the cast and crew worked tirelessly to bring this show to life. I am so proud.”

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Councilmen Anthony Manetta and Terry McSweeney and Town Clerk Gerry Compitello recently presented Larry Hickam with the Town of Babylon Heroism Award. Hickam, a Vietnam veteran and Deer Park resident, saved a man’s life when his wheelchair became stuck in a railroad crossing in the path of

an oncoming train. Deer Park School District Superintendent Eva Demyen and Assistant School Transportation Supervisor Pat Shea were also in attendance. Schaffer commended Hickam for his bravery and decision to put himself in danger to help someone else. Martinez echoed that, and added that he was there for a reason that day. Hickam, who was on his way to complete his

Deer Park High School took a creative tack for this year’s winter play, “Clue,” which started out as a murder mystery board game in 1949, and was later made into a movie in 1985. Guided by Director Kristen Wallace, the school’s dramatic arts students adapted the movie for the stage, including a multimedia element in which the students filmed sections of the story at the Scully Mansion at Seatuck and then integrated these prerecorded segments into

Hero Bus Driver afternoon shift, claims that he took a slightly different route to the bus depot when he saw the man in danger. After flagging someone else down to assist him, Hickam freed the wheelchair tire that was jammed in the track and lifted him to safety. The Town of Babylon Heroism Award is the highest honor given by the Town.

Heading to LI Championship The FIRST® Tech Challenge season – dubbed FIRST RELIC RECOVERYSM (presented by Qualcomm) – will culminate this weekend with the SBPLI Long Island Championship tournament. Presented locally by School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), FIRST® Tech Challenge inspires students age 12 to 18 to pursue an interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. Twenty-four teams (noted below) from across Long Island will compete in the event at Smithtown High School West on Sunday, February 11th. The participating teams earned the opportunity to compete during one of five regional qualifying tournaments that took place at Lynbrook, Center Moriches and Sewanhaka High Schools throughout the month of January. Working alongside adult mentors, more than 46,000 students in nearly 20 countries have spent the last several months

designing, building, programming and operating robots to play a floor game in an alliance format on a 12-foot by 12-foot field. This season, FIRST Tech Challenge teams across the world were asked to don their adventurers’ hats to create robots capable of retrieving opponent-colored jewels from platforms, scoring glyphs into crypto boxes, creating cipher patterns, moving “relics” to a recovery zone and parking their robots on “balancing stones.” During the FIRST Tech Challenge events, students demonstrate their problem-solving skills, creative thinking, teamwork, competitive play, sportsmanship and sense of community. Teams work to score points, awarded through accomplishing the aforementioned tasks, during 150 seconds of game play, which includes autonomous and drivercontrolled periods. Three teams from the FIRST Long Island Championship will

go on to the SuperRegional Championship Tournament “East” in Scranton, Pennsylvania, March 16th-18th, 2018. Teams at the SuperRegional will compete for the opportunity to advance to the FIRST Tech Challenge World Championship in Detroit, April 25th-28th, 2018. “One hundred fifteen local teams competed at regional tournaments this season for an opportunity to participate in the SBPLI Long Island Championship,” says Janet Anderson, Program Director and SBPLI/FIRST Long Island representative. “FIRST Tech Challenge has grown into a powerful program for students across Long Island, and we are excited to see which teams will continue on to the SuperRegional in Scranton as representatives of Long Island’s STEM talent.” For more information on SBPLI or FIRST Tech Challenge, please visit www.sbpli-lifirst.org.

(NAPSI)—Did you know that an estimated one in five adults over age 50 are affected by isolation? This is a problem, as research has shown that prolonged isolation can be as bad for you as smoking 15 cigarettes a day—and these negative health consequences of chronic isolation may be especially harmful for older adults. Here are some suggestions to combat the problem of social isolation and loneliness: • Nurture and strengthen existing relationships; invite people over for coffee or call them to suggest a trip to a museum or to see

a movie. • Schedule a time each day to call or visit someone. • Meet your neighbors. • Don’t let being a nondriver stop you from staying active. Find out about transportation options. • Use social media to stay in touch or write letters. • Stay physically active. • Take a class. • Revisit an old hobby. • Volunteer. • Visit a senior or community center to see what’s going on. • Check out faith-based organizations’ groups and events. To connect to aging

services and programs in your area: Contact the Eldercare Locator, a public service of the U.S. Administration on Aging, a part of the Administration for Community Living. This nationwide service is a trusted gateway to connect older adults and their caregivers with local resources for older adults. Call the Eldercare Locator at 1-800-677-1116 to speak with a knowledgeable Information Specialist or visit the website www. eldercare.gov to find local resources on a broad range of topics and access help today.

Caring For Granite Countertops (NAPSI)—Granite countertops are the most popular option available when it comes to kitchen or bathroom remodeling. They look great, they’re durable, but they can also cost thousands of dollars. Granite requires special care and attention because it’s a natural stone. Here are a few tips to help you protect your investment: • Seal your countertops: According to the Marble Institute of America, an industry group, granite countertops should be sealed so that the stone is more resistant to dirt and spills. Check with the manufacturer or retailer about the best kind of sealer to use on food preparation areas. • Be careful what

you clean with: Never use ammonia—based products-or cleaners containing vinegar, lemon or orange—on your granite countertops. Avoid abrasive cleaners such as dry or soft cleansers. Don’t use cleaning products that contain acid such as bathroom, grout, or tub and tile cleaners. Specialty granite cleaners can be used, but they can be expensive. There’s a way to stretch your dollars. • Mind your budget: JAWS Glass & Hard Surface Cleaner (www.jawscleans. com) cleans granite countertops, stainless steel appliances, glass and even your flat-screen TV. It’s also non-toxic and costs less than most other cleaners because each

JAWS product is actually two bottles in one. (The cartridge refill is attached to the bottle.) There are also some other basic preventive measures you can take to protect your granite countertops: • Use coasters: Place a coaster under all glasses, particularly those containing alcohol or citrus juices that can etch or dull the surface of many stone countertops. • Use trivets or mats: They’ll protect your granite countertop from hot dishes and help avoid scratches. Granite countertops can really add spark to a kitchen or bathroom. Proper care will keep them looking beautiful.

(NAPSI)—Chef Chris Smith (aka The Diabetic Chef), a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and a person living with type 1 diabetes, may have good news for the nearly 30 million other Americans with his condition: Being diagnosed with diabetes doesn’t mean your life needs to lack flavor. There are many ways to prepare nutritious and delicious meals without sacrificing taste. In fact, Chef Smith worked with Equal

0-calorie sweetener to develop a digital recipe guide and tips to take the guesswork out of meal planning. Five other things he suggests: • Use your resources, including your health care provider, dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator. • Understand the relationship between carbohydrates and blood sugar and learn how to manage them. • Monitor how much

sodium, saturated fat and sugar you consume. • Incorporate more fruits and vegetables into your diet. • Read nutritional labels—know what you’re eating. A variety of sweet and savory dishes that use Equal instead of sugar are suitable for people with diabetes and anyone who wants a healthy lifestyle. It tastes great in hot and cold beverages, on fruit or cereal, and in most recipes that use sugar.

No. 1 killer in the U.S. The problem is that high cholesterol and your risk may be greater than you think. According to American Heart Association guidelines, the acceptable level of “bad cholesterol” is 30 percent lower than it used to be only a few years ago. This means that millions of Americans, including those who never dreamed they were at risk, now are. Fortunately, there are natural, nonprescription alternatives for lowering cholesterol. For example, heart-healthy products such as TeaFlavin, an all-natural, caffeine-free capsule made from tea extract, contain as much cholesterol-fighting power as 35 cups of green tea. Older People Improve Life For Others And Themselves (NAPSI)—Many older Americans have discovered that sharing their accumulated wisdom with others who need help can be a big win all around. Here’s a look at two ways you can stretch your mind and show your heart: Experience Corps AARP Foundation Experience Corps unites teachers, schools and older adults to improve children’s academic and social outcomes. This benefits the children, the schools and the volunteers. The program has been proven to help children who aren’t reading at grade level become better readers by the end of third

grade. Last school year, 76 percent of students who were below grade level at the beginning of the year raised their reading and literacy performance by one or more proficiency levels with the help of Experience Corps volunteers. The goal is to improve children’s literacy, strengthen communities, develop cultures of inspiration in schools and support hardworking teachers. It’s already changed the lives of thousands of children in schools across America. Volunteers should be age 50 or older; have at least a high school diploma

or GED; pass a criminal background check; pass a basic literacy screening; attend 25 hours of annual training; and have five to 15 hours a week to offer during the school year. Tax-Aide AARP Foundation also runs Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, giving special attention to those 50 and older. It offers free tax-filing help to those who need it most. You do not need to be a member of AARP or even a retiree to use this free service. IRS tax-certified volunteer preparers in libraries, malls, banks, community centers and

senior centers answer questions and prepare tax returns. In addition to earned and retirement income reporting, they can also help with investment income (interest, dividends, and capital gains for Schedule D), Schedule C for individuals with small businesses that have less than $25,000 in annual expenses, and various health care, education, child and earned income credits. Compassionate and friendly individuals can volunteer for the upcoming tax season. Volunteers receive training and continued support in a welcoming environment.
