Sarah Naqvi Named To All-County Jazz Ensemble

Deer Park High School senior Sarah Naqvi was recently selected to perform with the Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association’s All-County Jazz Ensemble. Naqvi had the distinction of being selected after auditioning for the group last spring and was one of only two alto saxophonists selected for the group from Suffolk County. In addition to playing the saxophone, Naqvi is an accomplished flutist and member of both the wind ensemble and jazz ensemble at Deer Park High School.

“I’m very pleased that Sarah received both the recognition and the opportunity to perform alongside other talented and dedicated students from Suffolk County who are interested in pursuing jazz studies,” Band Director Louis Nicolosi said. “I couldn’t be happier for her. She worked very hard for this.”

to nearly 600 member agencies in the first 10 months of the pandemic, Long Island Cares seeks to heighten public awareness about hunger and provides skills training to foster self-sufficiency among the population that benefits from their services.

Many times hunger and poverty are hard to see. By outward appearances, we may not know a family is struggling or that a school age child does not have

enough food at home. People needing help are often filled with shame when they seek assistance and no matter how kind the food pantry worker may be, the worried parent keeps thinking, “I can’t feed my kids.”

On behalf of all of the children and families served by Long Island Cares, they are truly grateful for your support.

Based in Garden City, observing 27 years of service, The Corporate Source (TCS) has a presence throughout the Greater New York Metro Region, along with the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. They create value for individuals with disabilities by providing well paying jobs along with the necessary training, job coaching and support to be successful in the workplace. TCS creates value to companies and organizations by providing important outsourcing services and by increasing diversity at these sites.

With nearly 400 employees, this organization provides services such as janitorial, maintenance, call center services, mail room and courier, and kennel services to federal, state and public organizations. Recently, TCS moved into another area o ering tremendous growth potential for individuals with disabilities - Information Technology (IT).

The Bureau of Labor Statistics has projected a 12 percent growth rate in the IT field between 2018 and 2028, which is much faster than the average for all occupations. In December 2022, employers across the United States listed over 18,000 open positions for IT support specialists, according to CompTIA’s monthly “Tech Jobs Report.” This expressed demand on the part of potential employers is echoed by the disability community, which has expressed tremendous interest in the IT sector.

TCS has partnered in a key initiative with CompTIA to train and certify people with disabilities for lucrative positions in the IT field. The “TCS IT Training and A+ Certification Program” is a comprehensive 13 week program with instruction provided virtually with individualized support for program participants that is provided by TCS’ Vocational Rehabilitation unit. The structure of the training is adapted to meet the needs and learning

styles of the participants. At the conclusion of the virtual classroom, instruction students will have the opportunity to earn two professional certifications – CompTIA IT Fundamentals, an introduction to basic IT knowledge and skills, and CompTIA A+, the industry standard for establishing a career in IT. The objective is to teach marketable IT skills, along with appropriate work behaviors, to ensure that graduates will be qualified for jobs such as: help desk technicians, desktop support people and field technicians who assist with hardware and equipment setup.

At their 2022 Long Island SummIT Awards Dinner, The Long Island Software & Technology Network recognized TCS for its innovative e orts and leadership to recruit people with disabilities to fulfill IT sector jobs.

On February 28, 2023, the second class coming through the TCS IT Training & Certification Program will be graduating. These graduates who are mainly from Nassau and Su olk counties are eager to begin their careers!

One of the initial graduates, Ayisat, expressed that she was thrilled to take advantage of this opportunity to further her career. She had been working for TCS as a Telephone Operator for the Veterans Administration Hospital in Manhattan when she was approached by her manager about the opportunity to participate in the IT Training Program. After successfully completing the program and obtaining her certifications, Ayisat secured a job as a Help Desk Technician. She is now working remotely and excited about her career potential.

Have you reviewed your insToo often people file claims for damage that will not be covered by insurance.

To be an eligible claim, the damage must be caused by something that is ‘unexpected and unpredictable.’ Homeowners have an obligation to maintain their property. Insurance policies do not provide for maintenance.

Too often an insurer will hear from a client that a fence fell down in a windstorm or that there is a leak from the roof. When the adjuster sees that the wood fence is rotten or that the roof is aged and decrepit, the claim will be denied. One should expect that a rotten fence will fall in the wind or that an old roof will leak. These should be repaired or replaced before they become a pile of debris or a sieve.

With Winter Heating Season Here, PSEG Long Island Customers May Be Eligible For Assistance

As winter heating season approaches, PSEG Long Island recognizes that many households are facing challenging times and wants to remind its customers that programs exist to help people struggling with utility bills. There are also many ways they can lower their bills by using energy wisely.

“Everything is more expensive today, and PSEG Long Island continues to work hard to provide our customers with safe,

reliable energy at the lowest possible cost,” said

Lou DeBrino, PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Customer Services.

“To help manage energy use and costs, we offer resources, tips and a variety of energy efficiency programs. We also know many of our customers are struggling to pay bills, and we encourage them to reach out to us to enroll in a deferred payment agreement and learn about available financial

assistance programs. Colder weather is coming, which will mean higher heating costs. We urge our customers to act now, and we’re here to help.”

The costs associated with purchasing fuel for electric power supply are directly passed through to the customers. With energy costs rising due to global conflict, inflation, and high demand as the winter heating season approaches, PSEG Long Island understands the impact this increased financial burden can have on its customers.

In accordance with a policy established by the LIPA Board of Trustees, a hedging program is in place to reduce the volatility of power supply costs for customers. Hedging provides price stability in case of unforeseen commodity market and weather events that drive up prices. In addition, PSEG Long Island and LIPA work to further mitigate the monthly volatility to customers as costs materialize.

How Customers Can Lower Their Bills

The most effective thing customers can to do lower their bills is to use electricity more efficiently. Here are some helpful tips:

• Replace inefficient incandescent light bulbs with LED bulbs since, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, lighting accounts for about 15% of the electricity used in the home, and LEDs use up to 90% less energy and last up to 25 times longer.

• Use a programmable thermostat to automatically manage your home’s heating and cooling needs.

estimates that properly used programmable thermostats can save the average American household about $180 a year. In addition, PSEG Long Island offers rebates on smart thermostats.

• Lower your thermostat by just one degree to potentially reduce your heating bill. Lowering it two degrees during the day and five to 10 degrees at night will save even more.

• Install timers and motion detectors to automatically manage indoor and outdoor lighting and help ensure lights are not on when they’re not needed.

• Ceiling fans can be used to save energy in winter. Setting a fan to rotate clockwise on low pulls cool air toward the ceiling, pushing warm air down into a room.

• Seal windows and doorframes with weather stripping or caulk, and remove or cover window air conditioners to help to prevent drafts that waste energy and money.

• Reduce “phantom power” by using energy efficient power strips or unplugging electronic devices when they’re not in use. Items plugged into outlets use electricity even when they’re turned off.

• Install a high efficiency air source heat pump (ASHP) to lower energy usage, save money and provide greater comfort in cold and hot months. Robust rebates are available from PSEG Long Island’s Home Comfort

Program for ducted ASHP units, ducted geothermal heat pumps and ductless mini split systems. Additionally, PSEG Long Island’s Home Comfort PLUS program offers enhanced rebates for customers who meet certain income qualifications.

Assistance Available To Those Struggling With Bills

PSEG Long Island wants to work with any customer struggling to pay their bills and help them find a solution. The company encourages anyone with a past-due account balance to call 1-800-490-0025 so a representative can help them develop a deferred payment agreement tailored to the needs of their household.

Additionally, PSEG Long Island wants to make customers aware of the financial assistance programs offered by New York State:

· The New York State Electric and Gas Bill Relief Program: Customers enrolled in PSEG Long Island’s Household Assistance Program will automatically receive a credit toward their arrears as of May 1, 2022, via this new, state-run program. Customers who meet the eligibility requirements and have not yet enrolled in the Household Assistance Program have until Dec. 31, 2022 to enroll in the Household Assistance Program to qualify for this bill credit.

· Customers who have received a payment on their PSEG Long Island

account through the New York State-administered Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) also qualify for the New York State Electric and Gas Bill Relief Program. As ERAP payments continue to be received, the New York State Electric and Gas Bill Relief Program will remain open through Dec. 31, 2022.

The Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) can provide a heating fuel grant to eligible homeowners and renters depending on income, household size and how they heat their home. A family of four may have a maximum gross monthly income of $5,485 and still qualify for benefits. This benefit is scheduled to open on Nov. 1. Emergency HEAP, a subset of the HEAP program, offers eligible customers a grant to help low- and middleincome New Yorkers avoid having their home heating disconnected or exhausting their heating fuel source. This emergency portion of HEAP is scheduled to open on Jan. 3, 2023. If customers are experiencing an emergency, they can apply for this benefit by reaching out to their local Department of Social

Services location, which can be found here: https:// otda.ny.gov/programs/ heap/contacts/

· For low-income house-holds facing noheat situations, the State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance is also accepting applications for its heating equipment repair or replacement benefit. Eligible homeowners can now apply for up to $4,000 for repair or $8,000 for replacement of a furnace, boiler or other direct heating equipment necessary to keep the household’s primary heating source working. Additionally, eligible households can receive energy efficiency services, which includes the cleaning of primary heating equipment to allow for its safe and efficient operation. Customers can apply for this benefit by reaching out to their local Department of Social Services location, which can be found here: https:// otda.ny.gov/programs/ heap/contacts/

Customers who apply for and receive one of these state or federal benefits are automatically placed on PSEG Long Island’s Household Assistance rate and the residential energy affordability program providing energy efficiency measures and suggestions to help lower consumption.

What Are Clinical Trials?

Breast cancer treatments are highly effective, which is one reason why the National Cancer Institute can report that the five-year survival rate for non-metastatic breast cancer is 90 percent. However, in certain situations, doctors may feel that the existing standard for breast cancer treatment may not be enough to help women overcome their

disease. In such instances, doctors may discuss clinical trials with women battling breast cancer. The American Cancer Society defines clinical trials as research studies in which people volunteer to help doctors find ways to prevent or treat disease. The National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc.® points out that all current standards of treatment began

as clinical trials. However, that does not mean women diagnosed with breast cancer should automatically sign up to participate in clinical trials. There are pros and cons to participating in clinical trials, and breast cancer patients can speak with their medical teams about the advantages and disadvantages of each trial they’re considering. One

myth worth dispelling is that clinical trials are only an option for people who have been diagnosed with advanced stage cancer. In fact, the NCI notes that clinical trials are available for all stages of cancer. United States Air Force Thunderbirds To Headline 19th Annual

Bethpage Air Show At Jones Beach Taking Place May 27-28, 2023

Bethpage Federal Credit Union, New York State’s largest credit union, and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, are pleased to announce that the United States Air Force Thunderbirds will headline the 19th Annual Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach taking place on Saturday, May 27, 2023 and Sunday, May 28, 2023. This will be the demonstration team’s 9th performance at the Bethpage Air Show.

It was announced at the annual International Council of Air Shows

(ICAS) Convention yesterday that the United States Army Golden Knights Parachute Team and the United States Marine Corps F35B Lighting II will be performing, along with the world famous Skytpers, Long Island’s David Windmiller and Mike Goulian, North America’s most decorated aerobatic pilot.

“Last year, we were very grateful that the Thunderbirds changed their schedule to perform for us on Memorial Day, after the Saturday and Sunday weekend

shows were rained out,” said George Gorman, Regional Director, New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. “Suffice to say, we couldn’t be happier to welcome the team back to Long Island for our 2023 show!”

“The Bethpage Air Show continues to be one of New York’s most treasured events,” said Linda Armyn, Chief Strategy & Marketing Officer, Bethpage Federal Credit Union. “After 19 years, the pilots and performers, show organizers and fans have

grown to become a big family. We look forward to organizing a very special show for our fans this year.”

It was also announced that the United States Navy Blue Angels will return as headliners for the special 20th Anniversary Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach, which will take place on Saturday, May 25, 2024 and Sunday, May 26, 2024.

Remember To Thank All Those Who Care For Our Loved Ones On February 17 In Honor Of National Caregivers Day

James McPeak, Owner, McPeak’s Assisted Living, is reminding everyone that February 17 is National Caregivers Day and is urging everyone to thank those who take care of our elderly and infirm family members every day and recognize them for the hard work they do.

National Caregivers Day, which is held on the third Friday in February every year, honors these healthcare professionals who give their time and energy providing care to those who may require longterm care. Expert caregivers are trained to provide

services around the clock in safe environments; this allows the family members to focus on the loved one’s healing process.

According to the National Alliance for Caregiving and the American Association for Retired Persons (AARP), there are 53 million caregivers nationwide. Of that number, 19% are unpaid. However, many of the paid caregivers wind up leaving their jobs. The National Alliance for Caregiving/AARP poll found that 23% of the healthcare professionals experienced a decline in their health. Other reasons

why they quit, according to Sandata, include poor communication, long hours, lack of recognition, long commutes, poor training and low pay.

“On this day, we should take time out and recognize those who take care of our loved ones when we aren’t able to,” Mr. McPeak says. “Their job is a demanding job and many of them work through the day without receiving even as much as a ‘thank you.’ On February 17, let’s take some time to show our heartfelt gratitude for them and the work they do.”
