Deer Park’s Rebuilt Marching Falcons Program Flies High

Deer Park High School’s storied marching band program is on the rise, rebuilt to new heights.

The Marching Falcons have a long tradition of competitive excellence and enthusiasm, but the program had diminished in recent eras. Now, guided by current Band Director Derek Schmelter and boasting 45 student participants, the band is poised for bigger and better things.

The seeds for the band’s reinvigoration were sown when Schmelter was hired in 2020, and the marching band came up in discussions with District Administrator of Fine and Performing Arts Bradley Murphy.

“At that time, the marching band was a mandatory part of the band program, meaning if students were enrolled in band, they were required to participate in marching band,” Schmelter explained. “Brad and I decided that making it a volunteer program would give students the agency to choose whether or not to participate. Additionally, this opened up the opportunity to have after-school rehearsals, which has allowed us to improve the quality of our performance. In 2020-2021, we had a small number of students who participated both virtually and in person, but as we moved into the 2021-2022 school year, we nearly doubled in size. We had our first performance in a number of years as a voluntary co-curricular program and it went really well. Students saw the potential in the program, and we doubled in size again, going into this year. After our first summer band camp in a decade, we were set to perform in our normal halftime capacity and were able to schedule outside performances.”

Recent successes include participation in the Huntington New

York State Field Band Conference Competition and Newsday Marching Band Festival.

“Our musicians had the opportunity to see how supportive and positive the marching arts community is, and how other schools perform,” said Schmelter, who has been involved in the marching arts for over 15 years as a participant, designer and instructor.

“My primary goal for the band is for students to have a space to perform for and support the community of Deer Park, at football and basketball games, both as a pep band and marching ensemble, and marching in parades,” Schmelter said. “We may revisit competing locally. Whatever the kids want to do, I am here to explore that with them. There is a great history with the Deer Park Marching Falcons, and it’s clear the band’s presence in the community is longstanding. I am just trying to create a group that represents the school and community to the best of its ability.”

Schmelter is keenly aware of how much value the Marching Falcons bring to a school like Deer Park.

“A marching band helps develop a sense of pride and school spirit,” he said. “I feel that performing at school and community events gets everyone excited. We all listen to music in our daily lives, and I think that having a live ensemble enhances the joint experience. As the band is now more visible, I hope that parents and kids coming up through Frost and JFK will see what this program can bring to the Deer Park community. Only about half of the members at this time are enrolled in band. Color guard and percussion members participate in chorus, orchestra, or don’t even take part in a school ensemble. I love that we have such a variety of students in our

band, and that reflects the community we’re a part of.”

For the students, being in marching band brings multiple and diverse benefits, and their reasons for joining up are equally varied.

“When looking at it during football games, it would always catch my eye,” senior Riya Shah said, while sophomore Destiny Gavin said, “I had friends say that I should try it out, and I wanted to do more stuff related to music.”

“I wanted to get involved with band activities and feel the type of connection you would feel with a sports team or activity,” freshman Lauren Marable said. “The people have really made this an enjoyable experience. There’s no barriers or differences in school grades or interests, everyone finds a way to bond.”

“I love being in marching band because it allows me to meet so many new people and gives me new experiences that I would have never experienced before,” junior Hannah Ferguson said.

“I always remember watching videos of big college marching bands like Ohio State or USC, and just thinking, ‘I want to do that someday,’’’ senior Anthony Bruno said. “Once Deer Park started to grow its marching band, the decision to join was a no-brainer, and it was one of the best parts of my high school career. The best part of being in the band has to be the people. From the director and assistant directors to the seniors and underclassmen, the band becomes your second family. When you join a marching band, the experiences you have, and the friendships you make, they’ll stay with you for life.”

LIPA Announces New Community College Scholarship

Officials from the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) joined with representatives from Nassau Community College and Suffolk County Community College to announce a new community college scholarship program.

The LIPA Scholarship is designed to provide education and training for students from households with incomes below the median income of Long Island and the Rockaways (approximately $100,000 for a family of four) living in historically underserved communities.

The LIPA Scholarship is a $350,000 commitment over the next five years to provide 50 full scholarships for students to attend either Nassau Community College or Suffolk County Community College to obtain an associate degree or certificate that will help them pursue a career in the electric utility or clean energy sectors.

This investment is an effort to ensure that our workforce represents all the communities LIPA serves and that all of our customers can participate in the growing career opportunities available in the electric utility and clean energy industry.

Thomas Falcone, Chief Executive Officer of LIPA, said: “Electricity is the clean fuel of the future. Studies predict electricity will provide more than 70 percent of New York’s energy needs by 2050 and that it will be entirely carbon-free. With this growing industry, LIPA’s commitment to fund 50 scholarships at Nassau and Suffolk Community College over the next five years will ensure that our workforce represents all the communities LIPA serves and that all our customers can participate in the fabulous and growing career opportunities available in the electric sector.”

Dr. Edward T. Bonahue, President of Suffolk County Community College, said: “The Long Island Power Authority’s generous scholarships will help us recruit and sustain students entering the STEM fields, transforming our workforce and our region’s economy. With this support, LIPA joins the college in bridging our promising students from financial need to the high-need, high-wage disciplines that lead to a rewarding career.”

The curricula offered at Nassau Community College and Suffolk County Community College include courses relevant to the work LIPA does to meet the clean energy goals set by New York’s Climate Act, as well as to fulfill LIPA’s mission of providing clean, reliable, and affordable energy to Long Island and the Rockaways.

The LIPA Scholarship will support income-qualified, graduating high school seniors, allowing them to extend their educational development and enter the utility and clean energy sectors. Participation in the LIPA Scholarship will provide graduates with a competitive edge in applying for employment at LIPA and its contractor, PSEG Long Island, who plan to hire hundreds of entry-level workers over the next five years.

This five-year program will provide annual funding for ten full-time, two-year scholarships for low- to moderateincome students who reside in disadvantaged communities, as identified by New York’s Climate Justice Working Group,

planning to attend Nassau Community College or Suffolk County Community College. Residents of the following communities served by LIPA are eligible for the LIPA Scholarship:

Nassau County

· Westbury Village, New Cassel, Elmont, Hempstead Village, Uniondale, East Meadow, Valley Stream Village, South Valley Stream, Inwood, Oceanside, Roosevelt, Long Beach City, Glen Cove City, and East Massapequa.

Suffolk County

· Huntington Station, East Farmingdale, Wyandanch, West Babylon, North Amityville, Copiague, Lindenhurst Village, Brentwood, Islandia Village, Bay Shore, North Bay Shore, Central Islip, Ridge, Patchogue Village, Yaphank, Shirley, Mastic, Calverton, Flanders, Westhampton Beach Village, and Tuckahoe.

Queens County

· The Rockaways.

Awardees of LIPA’s Scholarship will have the opportunity to:

· Obtain a scholarship toward an associate degree or certificate program at either Nassau Community College or Suffolk County Community College.

· Attend LIPA Workforce Seminars with utility executives and subject matter experts.

· Receive job placement support for available positions at LIPA, PSEG Long Island, and other LIPA contractors and suppliers.

Deer Park HS Celebrates Top 10 Students

Deer Park High School celebrated the accomplishments of the school’s top 10 ranked seniors during a breakfast held in the library on Dec. 14, joined by parents, administrators and guidance counselors. Each student was called to the podium where their counselor introduced them and talked about their hard work and outstanding accomplishments.

Upcoming valedictorian Sophia Zorakhsh was ranked first with salutatorian Sarah Naqvi ranked second. Rounding out the top 10 were Steven Mendell (third), Brett Patrick (fourth), Jimmy Jiang (fifth), Ryder Min (sixth), Tiffany Bala (seventh), Gabriella Ortiz (eighth), Kayley Eising (ninth) and Ryan Klivansky (tenth).

Principal Charles Cobb congratulated the students and their parents and guardians on this momentous occasion and the culmination of 13 years of the students’ hard work, dedication and constant pursuit of perfection in their academic pursuits. He noted that being named a top 10 student doesn’t just start at the end of their high school career, but instead, starts with the foundation laid and fostered by teachers, parents and guardians.

“I encourage and implore all of you to not stop here,” Cobb told the students. “Continue to do what you are doing with passion and vigor.”

The Charity of the Month for January is Pal-O-Mine Equestrian

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian is a local non-proﬁt organization that began in 1995 as a therapeutic horseback riding program for individuals with disabilities and other vulnerable populations. They grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today!

“Our mission has been, and continues to be, to provide a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing,” said Lisa Gatti, Founder and CEO of Pal-O-Mine Equestrian. “We proudly serve individuals with disabilities, those who have been abused or neglected, the military and the impoverished.”

Their location in Islandia offers an unequaled setting for equestrian activities, with a 20-stall barn on 13 acres, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of-the-art-footing and a rider hoisting system, 3 outdoor riding arenas, classrooms, accessible playground, a greenhouse and a wellness center.

Looking back on 2022, Pal-O-Mine logged 4,250 hours of Volunteer Hours and 86,400 Client Contact Hours. “2022 was about inspiring one another to reach common goals and emerging stronger,” said Lisa. “Our volunteers are an integral part of the day to day

operations at Pal-O-Mine. We all work together to serve our clients the best we can.”

They also aded four new animals to their gang; three horses and a Great Pyrenees Mountain Dog, Luca who is a natural at his job of watching over the herd. Bubba, one of the horses was generously donated to them by the Morris Family. He is an amazing lesson horse and is a client favorite in their equine yoga program. Another one of the horses is Alana, a pro at teaching new students to ride independently. Lastly, Sunﬂower is their newest horse, which is enjoying to learn about all the different programs held at Pal-O-Mine.

“2023 will be a year of physical growth with our new educational center and treatment clinic, as well as spiritual growth by continuing to serve the many who need our 13 acre farm and herd to help them heal from trauma, grow in personal strength and learn new things to brighten their future.”

Students Earn Distinguished Youth Award Gold Medals

Deer Park High School seniors Emily Franciscovich and Dimitra Pavlatos and freshman Muntazir Mehdi recently received Distinguished Youth Award gold medals from the Suffolk County Legislature. The three students were honored at a Nov. 22 ceremony. For Franciscovich and Pavlatos, it was their second consecutive year earning this distinction.

The Distinguished Youth Award program challenges Suffolk County’s youth to become more involved in civics in their communities and requires 200 hours of volunteer service, 100 hours of personal development, 100 hours of physical fitness and exploration through visits to 15 Suffolk County parks.

administrators at a BOCES holiday dinner.
