Hospitals Intensify Flu Prevention Efforts

Flu Shots And Surgical Facemasks Part Of Effort To Stem Flu agencies who are not vaccinated against the flu are required to wear a mask while in areas where patients or residents are typically present. While an annual flu vaccine remains the single best method for preventing the flu, a surgical facemask, worn by employees, provides added protection to patients, employees, and visitors. All hospitals on Long Island and in the Hudson Valley offer the flu vaccine to all employees and also provide employees with surgical facemasks, as required by New York State public health law. As a matter of standard practice, all Long Island and Hudson Valley hospitals enforce universally recognized precautions to prevent the flu. These include hand washing,

the use of hand sanitizers placed conveniently throughout the hospital, as well as goggles and gowns. In addition, all hospitals adhere to rigorous infection control guidelines and policies every day to ensure a clean environment for patients, staff, and visitors. These practices are especially important during flu season. Antiseptic wipes are located in patient rooms, workstations, hallways, and other treatment areas and are easily accessible to hospital employees responsible for sanitizing medical equipment and surface areas. “Flu prevention is a priority at all hospitals on Long Island and in the

Flu virus was declared prevalent by the New York State Health Commissioner on December 6, 2023, and hospitals on Long Island and throughout the Hudson Valley are taking additional steps to prevent the spread of flu, including enhanced efforts to vaccinate all employees and distribution of surgical facemasks. Worn by employees, masks offer a physical barrier to flu transmission. This is a comprehensive endeavor to protect patients, visitors, and employees from exposure to the flu virus. At the Deer Park School District Board of Education’s Dec. 19 meeting, Robert Frost Middle School students Abigail Daniel and Ibrahim Faisal were honored for their participation in the Town of Babylon Veterans Day Awareness Week essay contest. Daniel earned first place in the competition, with Faisal taking second. “I think it’s very important that our students understand the value of service and be able to express their appreciation,” Superintendent James Cummings said. Next, the board recognized five Deer Park High School students attending the Wilson Tech

program at BOCES who participated in the annual holiday dinner: culinary students Adrian Rosario, Andrew Vanegas, Joseph Ventincinque and Ramon Zapeta Leon, and aviation student Zamani Simon. As a result of the district’s partnership with Western Suffolk BOCES, Deer Park juniors spend half of their school day at the high school and the other half learning different trades at Wilson Tech. Every winter, the WSBOCES superintendents and boards of education are treated to a dinner by Wilson Tech’s culinary students. For this event, these juniors get to work in the kitchen, out on the floor serving,

and at the serving and carving stations. During the cocktail hour, all the Wilson Tech students present demonstrations on the programs they are participating in. “In my estimation, it’s a really great way for the board to see the students thriving in a program that we invest in,” Cummings said. “We are proud of them. It’s a nice night, because we also get to sit and meet the students and talk to them in a way that we normally don’t get a chance to. We thank them for giving us such a nice night and sharing their experiences at BOCES with us.”

May Moore Explores Extreme Science Experiments Deer Park’s May Moore Primary School recently hosted magician and science entertainer David Hagerman’s Extreme Science assembly. Hagerman investigated the science behind many things the students take for granted in their everyday lives. Using in-line skates,

Hagerman demonstrated the laws of motion. Armed with a giant bungee cord slingshot, the students witnessed potential and kinetic energy and explored gyroscopes via a balancing act. He used slime to explain polymers, caused water to “vanish” to explain crystallization

and provided a shocking experience to demonstrate electricity. “What an awesome time learning through cool science experiments,” Associate Principal Kimberly Essig said. “We had a blast!”
