Sea Tow is proud to announce that the “StuffA-Boat” donation drive for the 2013 holiday season was a huge success. Sponsored

badly needed assistance and cheer during the 2013 holiday season. The Southold “Stuff a Boat” donation drive hosted by Sea Tow Services International, Inc., took place December 7th through 14th. All collected donations benefited CAST (Community Action of Southold Town) as well as NFAWL (the North Fork Animal Welfare League) and were delivered on Tuesday, December 17th despite the snow. Sea Tow International employees gathered in the morning and stuffed the Sea Tow Twin-Vee boat that had been servicing Montauk boaters this past summer with all the donations. Students from Mattituck High School as well as Southold Pack 6 Cub Scouts volunteered to be at Sea Tow International headquarters and collect donations. Sea Tow hosted a raffle for the Cub Scout

Snowscape By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Remember when you were a kid in school, just dying for that first snowfall to cancel classes? The only plans for the day revolved around making snowmen and snow angels, and then maybe curling up on the couch with some hot cocoa and cookies to watch a movie. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? Fast forward twenty or so years, and the words “chance of flurries” immediately

inspire mass panic and a stampede to stock up on milk and bread. And shovels. Because, you know, you can never have too many. Gone are the days of crossing your fingers for a “snow day” – now, it’s a mad rush to dig out, defrost and brave the slippery slopes on your way to work. Ah, the joys of adulthood. Of course there are days when the snow is insurmountable for even us adults, and we get to stay home and play in the snow too – or at least watch the

neighborhood children from the window, cup of cocoa in hand, reveling in memories of simpler times. How far away those seem. We are fortunate to live in an area where we experience the full force of Mother Nature in all her four-seasoned glory. We may as well enjoy it while we can. Think of the snow as an escape from the routine – or, at the very least, a great way to kick off that New Year’s resolution by burning a few calories while shoveling!

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today honored Fred Pollert for his 37 years of service to Suffolk County residents by presenting him with the distinguished Suffolk County Public Service Award. The Suffolk County Public Service Award, is the highest honor to be bestowed on an individual for extraordinary and exemplary service to the people of Suffolk County. “I can’t think of anyone who could be more deserving of being honored with the County’s highest award than Fred Pollert.” Bellone said. For almost four decades, Fred has worked to make government more efficient and save taxpayer dollars. He is one of the most dedicated public servants I have ever encountered and I will be forever grateful

to him for coming out of retirement in 2012 to help navigate the County through the worst fiscal crisis in its history.” Pollert worked for 27 years for the Suffolk County Legislature’s Budget Review Office, serving as Director, six years as Deputy County Executive for Finance under County Executive Steve Levy and two years as Vice President for Administration for the Long Island Power Authority. For the past two years he has served as Deputy County Executive for Finance and Management under County Executive Bellone, returning to County service in order to work with County Executive Bellone on fiscally responsible items to put Suffolk County back onto strong fiscal footing without piercing the tax cap.

The award was created during the administration of County Executive John Klein and designed by then Chief Deputy County Executive Arthur Bergmann. It was first presented in 1973 and

over the past 40 years, it has only been presented to 17 individuals. The first was presented to H. Lee Dennison, who served as Suffolk’s first County Executive.

On Thursday December 26th at 3:21 p.m., Suffolk County EMS First Responder, Christine Hogan, answered a 911 emergency call for active maternity help. Christine’s over the phone instructions would prove vital in successfully bringing a bouncing baby girl into this world. As delivery became eminent, Christine began to provide postdispatch and pre-arrival instructions which included clearing the infant’s airway and tying off the umbilical cord. Christine answered the call with one patient, and quickly found herself with two. She smoothly transitioned to a multiple patient scenario while maintaining a professional demeanor throughout the entire call. “Christine provided care for a Suffolk County

resident, and her family, at a level consistent with both, the National Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch and the Suffolk County Department of Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Services,” said Commissioner Joseph Williams, Fire, Rescue, Emergency Services (FRES). “Christine should truly be commended for a job well done.”

Christine consistently remained calm and reassuring toward the caller as she assisted in the successful delivery of the newborn baby girl. The Suffolk County Police Department along with the Brentwood Legion Ambulance arrived on scene post-delivery, to take over pre-hospital care of both the mother and her newborn. “Our men and women

of Emergency Medical Services in Suffolk County have consistently gone above and beyond to ensure the safety of our residents,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “I am proud of Christine’s unwavering composure and thank her for her commitment to serve the people of Suffolk County.”

PJ PARTY - In December the Deer Park Girl Scouts hosted a PJ Holiday Party for all Daisy, Brownie and Junior scouts. The girls donned their Holiday PJ’s, made snowman crafts, sang holiday songs, ate holiday themed snacks and earned a Holiday Party fun patch for participating. The student council at Deer Park’s Robert Frost Middle School recently conducted its annual Soaps for Seniors project. The giving-back effort involves the collection of shampoo, conditioner, combs, brushes, toothpaste, toothbrushes, lotions and other hygiene products for the benefit of local senior

citizens. The members of the council packaged the toiletries and delivered them to seniors at two local nursing homes, Our Lady of Consolation Nursing & Rehabilitative Care Center in West Islip and Sunrise Senior Living in Dix Hills, accompanied by festive musical performances

from the Robert Frost Chamber Choir and a small ensemble comprised of players from the school’s chamber orchestra. “Having the young students visit them is a bright spot in the day of these senior citizens,” said student council adviser Carole DiPietrantonio.

JUNIOR AIDE AWARDS - Recently DP Girl Scout Troop 1163 hosted an event for DP Daisy and Brownie Scouts so that they could earn their Junior Aide Award. First the Junior girls hosted the Brownies to help them earn the Girl Scout Way Badge. Then the Junior girls hosted the Daisies to help them earn their Violet Petal. To earn these awards, the Juniors brought their younger girl buddies through a series of stations. At the end, each girl earned their award, plus a “Helping Hands” fun patch for all helping each other earn their respective awards! Four superlative Deer Park student-musicians – high school senior Noah Roff (viola), John F. Kennedy Intermediate School fifth-grader Julia Catanzano (violin), and Robert Frost Middle School eighth-grader Vy Do (violin) and seventh-grader Alexandra Doogan (bass) – have been selected for this year’s Long Island String Festival. They will be performing with other students from Suffolk County at the festival during January and February. “My congratulations to these students and the district’s outstanding string teachers, Kathryn Attard, Catherine Lubrano and Maria Wingert,” said Dr. Jeff S. Dailey, the district’s director of fine and performing arts. LISFA selection is based on several criteria, including New York State School Music Association solo festival scores and recommendations from school music teachers. “These are truly outstanding students and wonderful kids,” said Wingert, the string teacher at Robert Frost. Roff was also chosen to be principal violist of the NYSCAME All-County Orchestra, an honor indicating that he is the top-ranked high school viola player in

CHRISTMAS PARADE - Junior Girl Scout Troop 1163 recently broke out their angel wings and halos for the Annual DPFD Christmas Parade. The girls walked with all the Deer Park Girl Scouts from the High School to the Fire Department and then watched as they lit the Christmas Tree! It was so beautiful and the girls had a great time while earning a Holiday Parade fun patch.

In the spirit of the season, John F. Kennedy Intermediate School thirdgraders in the class of Maria Giammona, Marie Tortorici and Debra Wasp were inspired to raise money for Heifer International over the course of two weeks. Since 1944, the Heifer organization has brought help, healing and hope to millions of impoverished families across the globe. Funds donated to the

charity go to purchase items such as livestock, which provide longterm solutions to problems of hunger and poverty. The trio of teachers asked students who wished to volunteer for the project to drop their spare change from lunch in the class donation bucket or earn funds by doing extra chores around the house. Once the money was collected, the class

voted on what animals to send, deciding to provide a flock of chicks and a trio of rabbits to nourish families in a village overseas. “We hope this life lesson will help the children feel a sense of pride and also realize what the holiday season is truly about,” said Wasp. “They were very excited and truly enjoyed the sense of giving that they felt.”

Eleven Deer Park High School sports teams were recognized at the school’s fall athletic awards ceremony during a recent Board of Education meeting, attended by many of the athletes and their proud families. A total of eight outstanding teams – varsity cheerleading, boys crosscountry, kickline, boys varsity soccer, girls varsity soccer, girls swimming and diving, varsity girls tennis, and varsity volleyball – were honored as Scholar/

Athlete teams for their successful commitment to both athletics and academics. Teams honored with this award by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association must have at least five players and earn a cumulative team GPA of 90 percent or higher. The varsity girls tennis team, led by three All-League players, was crowned League IV champions. The remarkable junior varsity volleyball team boasted

an undefeated season, finishing 17-0. The boys varsity soccer team – including a number of Scholar/Athlete, AllLeague, All-County and All-Conference players – qualified for the playoffs, as did the varsity football squad, which boasted four All-Conference athletes, while the junior varsity football team received their league’s vaunted Sportsmanship Award for fair play.
