As more people work remotely, electricians and safety advocates are warning that various missteps may be putting people at unnecessary risk of fire and other unsafe conditions. Electrical equipment is necessary to run home offices just like it is traditional offices. Some people may find they have a shortage of electrical outlets to power their devices, and as a result they may turn to extension cords or power strips. While that may seem like an easy fix, it is easy to inadvertently overload outlets and circuits by connecting more than one power strip or extension cord together in a practice known as “daisy chaining.” 17495 + TAX

According to the U.S. Office of Compliance, using a daisy chain in the workplace violates the National Electrical Code as well as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s rules. While it may not break code at home, overloading any outlets increases risk for fire. The National Fire Protection Association indicates that more than 45,000 residential fires are started each year due to electrical failure and malfunction. Overload causes products to overheat, and that can spark fires in the power cords themselves or inside the wall where electrical lines are hidden.

Town Of Babylon Planning & Building Department To Launch New Online Application System Through OpenGov In 2026 new system—launching in February 2026—will provide a more accessible, transparent, and userfriendly experience. Beginning February 1, 2026, all building zoning, planning, rental, and accessory apartment applications must be submitted electronically through OpenGov. The online portal will

allow users to complete applications anytime, from anywhere, and follow each step of their review process in real time. The system will also accept online credit card payments. To ensure a smooth transition, the Planning and Building Department, including zoning, rental and accessory apartment

divisions, will pause accepting applications from January 28 through February 1, 2026 while the migration to OpenGov is finalized. During the month of February, the zoning, planning, rental and accessory apartment review boards will not meet as staff completes onboarding and transitioning.

DeLuca Kindergarten Families Celebrate Holiday Season

On Dec. 12, Mrs. Rebholz’s kindergarten classroom at William E. DeLuca Elementary School in the North Babylon School District was filled with warmth and holiday cheer as students and their families gathered for a special seasonal celebration. Parents and children worked side by side creating festive crafts, including gingerbread men, snowmen and snow globe decorations, fostering meaningful moments of creativity and connection. The celebration continued with a holiday-themed story and cheerful songs that brought smiles to students and families alike. The event concluded with special treats, adding an extra touch of sweetness to the joyful afternoon.
