He later advanced to the prestigious and elite Rescue Company 1, where he proudly serves today. Cullen attended the game with his wife and three children, who watched with pride as their father was honored in front of thousands of fans. His father, Dara Cullen — a United States Army veteran who served in Vietnam — was also in attendance, making the recognition even more meaningful for a family with deep roots in military service. His oldest daughter, Riley, said the moment was overwhelming in the best way: “Seeing my dad on the jumbotron made me so proud. And when the entire UBS Arena stood up and clapped for him, it made the moment even better. We’ve always known he’s a hero, but it was amazing to see everyone else recognize it too.”
The nomination for this honor came from longtime friend and Town of Babylon Councilman Terence McSweeney, also a member of the FDNY, who has known Cullen for most of his life. “Brian has been part of my life for as long as I can

On Tuesday, December 2nd, North Babylon’s own Cpl. Brian Cullen was recognized as the Military Hero of the Game by the New York Islanders — an honor befitting a man whose life has been defined by courage, sacrifice, and service. Cullen served in the United States Marine Corps from 1994 to 1998, writing his “blank check” to the nation before continuing his career in public service. After completing his military commitment, he joined the NYPD’s 75th Precinct and, in 2001, became a member of the FDNY. Beginning his firefighting service in Ladder 138, Cullen earned the Medal of Valor from thenMayor Michael Bloomberg for re-entering a burning apartment building to rescue a trapped occupant — a moment that showcased the bravery he would continue to demonstrate throughout his career.

The guidance department is hosting its annual pajama drive, gathering brandnew pajamas that will be distributed to local families through the school’s social worker. In addition, Ms. Zipkas is leading the
schoolwide John Theissen Children’s Foundation Toy Drive, where both students and staff are donating new toys to brighten the holidays for children across Long Island. The school’s LEO Club,
advised by Ms. Lemmo, is also spearheading its annual Adopt-A-Family initiative, organizing gifts for 30 local families facing hardship this season. Beyond the donations, LEO Club members will participate in
the heartwarming tradition of boarding the Kids Need More “Cheer Bus.” Students will visit 10 local families who have children with medical needs, spreading cheer by singing carols, playing games, and
delivering toys. Together, these efforts highlight the generosity, compassion and community spirit that define the West Babylon High School family during the holiday season.
