Harmony Café is a nonprofit with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, yet affordable, meals to all who walk through their door. They’re a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation.

Catching Snowflakes “We have only this moment, sparking like a star in our hand ~ and melting like a snowflake.” ~ Sir Francis Bacon As we approach the end of 2017 and look ahead to the new horizons of 2018, we reﬂect. Each year is full of its own moments, ﬂeeting instants of happiness and sadness, anger and elation, all coming together to form this composite of life as we know it. And in those moments, we form the memories which carry us forward to the next chapter. There are two schools of thought relating to this; the first is that things have the ability to change in the blink of an eye, to take on an entirely new, often unexpected

direction. This can be in the form of a beautiful surprise, or a tragic turn; there is simply no telling. We are well aware of these possibilities. In fact, we will often remark how grateful we should be for the present, how appreciative of our blessings and those whom we love dearly. And yet, somewhere along the way, we tend to forget how very lucky we are.

Research Skills Young scientists showed off their research skills during the Copiague Middle School’s annual science fair on December 12th. This year, 28 projects completed by seventh- and eighth-grade students were chosen for submission. Students enrolled in a science or science research class conducted experiments, either alone or with a partner, and explained and displayed their results on a poster board. This year’s judges included Copiague Chamber of Commerce members, SUNY faculty members, Walter G’ Connell Copiague High School and Copiague

Middle School science teachers, Copiague School District administrators, Copiague alumni and Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School science research students. Students presented their findings and spoke about their research as the judges walked around the gymnasium. On December 19th, science fair participants gathered in the library for a special awards ceremony and recognition. Copiague Middle School Science Chairperson Dr. Daniel Lecesse and Copiague Middle School Principal Andrew Lagnado distributed trophies, certificates, monetary awards and a laptop to

the winners, donated by the Copiague Chamber of Commerce. First place was awarded to Kuba Szulejko for his project on “Distracted Walking.” Second-place honors went to Amani Hodge for “Does Age Affect the Ability to Remember a Dream?” and Johnell Hankerson II for “Glove Expansion.” In third place, the winners were Sebastian Ortiz for “Does Surface Area Affect Evaporation?;” Bradley Williams for “Burning Calories;” and Jennifer Calderon for “Ph. vs. Plant Growth.” Six other projects were recognized for honorable mentions.

Of course, all the theorizing in the world can only accomplish so much. A life on paper is not a life at all; the words must take shape in our actions and follow through in order to make any discernible difference. And, in that, we create our very own snowﬂake, a composite of our unique qualities and circumstances, our passions and personalities. No two are alike, and each one is exceptionally fragile and should be handled with care.

The second rationale follows the logic that, simply because the calendar has ﬂipped its pages does not mean that any other substantial changes are destined to follow. New year, new you… but only if you take the necessary steps to make it so. Students demonstrate their problem-solving skills, creative thinking, teamwork, competitive play, sportsmanship and sense of community. During all FIRST Tech Challenge tournaments, teams work in alliances with the goal of scoring more points, awarded through accomplishing the aforementioned tasks, during 150 seconds of game play, which includes

autonomous and drivercontrolled periods, on a 12-by-12-foot playing field. Last weekend’s scrimmages were the first events in the 2017-2018 FIRST Tech Challenge season on Long Island. Long Island students will then use these robots to compete in Qualifier tournaments at Lynbrook High School (Sunday, January 7th, 2018); Center Moriches High School (January 13th-14th, 2018); and Sewanhaka High School (January 27th28th, 2018). Students will compete at these events for a chance to ultimately advance to the Championship tournament at Smithtown High School West (February 11th, 2018). “FIRST Tech Challenge is growing rapidly on Long Island and we are excited to see what this season holds,” says Janet Anderson, Program Director and

The FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition season will once again kick off at the Jacob Javits Lecture Center at Stony Brook University. On Saturday, January 6th, 2018 at 9 a.m., FIRST Robotics Competition teams from across Long Island will gather in anticipation of learning about the forthcoming season’s robotics competition. Knowing only that this year’s theme is FIRST POWERUPSM, the local FIRST teams, and the more than 3,000 teams around the world, will receive this year’s game rules via NASA satellite transmission from FIRST headquarters in New Hampshire. During the Long Island Kick Off, SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), which presents the event, will also hold a special informational session for parents of participating students, during which they will learn about the organization, its mission and the importance of the robotics programs. Students and parents alike will also be treated to presentations from alumni, mentors and

sponsors regarding the impact of the program on the local communities and businesses. Towards the close of the event, each team will then collect its kit of parts to construct a 120-pound robot over the six-week design and build period leading up to the FIRST Robotics Competition tournaments. Following last year’s record-breaking registration for the SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition, the organization will now be hosting two regional tournaments across two sets of consecutive dates. Planned as a double header, these back-to-back regionals will be held April 9th to 11th and April 12th to 14th, 2018 at Hofstra University’s David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. Each event will serve as a separate regional, with different teams competing in separate alliances and tournament rounds. Some of the teams set to participate in the local regionals will move on to compete at the 2018 FIRST Championship in Detroit. Leading up to the regionals, SBPLI students will work with engineering mentors to apply

concepts of math and science learned in the classroom to build their robots. Students will also learn important concepts such as teamwork, problem solving and healthy competition. Many SBPLI students use these skills while pursuing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) studies and careers. Over the years, FIRST students from Long Island received millions of dollars in scholarships for higher education.
