The Charity of the Month for December is EAC Network

EAC Network is a non-profit organization that empowers, assists and cares for individuals in need. Their objective is to reach individuals within our community through innovative programs that improve quality of life. They have five service areas:

It’s the holiday season; a time to be jolly. A time particularly for children to be happy. On Wednesday, December 14th, EAC Network stepped up to support children in need on Long Island who otherwise would not have the possibility to celebrate this Holiday season like every child deserves to by hosting a Holiday Shopping Spree at Walmart in Farmingdale.

More than a hundred children and young adults, from 4 to 19 years old, were able to get a $100 gift card to spend on gifts of their choice. The event was organized in collaboration with Bethpage Federal Credit Union (BFCU) who donated $10,000 and Summit Health-CityMD, who donated $5,000.

Malik and Adrian, both 14 years old, were so grateful to be part of the shopping spree. With sparkles in their eyes as they explored the isles at Walmart and admired the different items on the shelves, their first stop was at the electronic game area, where they eagerly looked at different options available. The feeling of gratitude for the possibility to acquire a game or two, along with other items, was palpable.

Volunteers from Bethpage Federal Credit Union and Summit HealthCityMD spent the afternoon with each child to assist them as they purchased gifts.

After picking up a game, with excitement and humility Malik said, “I now have only one item in my cart, but I have what I was looking for and it feels good. It feels great.”

Sadly, the number of children in foster care is rising throughout the United States. These children are at a much higher risk of incarceration, teenage pregnancy, substance abuse, lack of self-esteem and of ending up on public assistance. However, EAC Network’s Chance to Advance program works to bring meaningful change to the lives of at-risk children and youth in foster care by providing positive outlooks and enrichment opportunities through oneon-one mentoring as well as life skills workshops and activities, with the goal of assisting, caring and empowering children to take control of their lives.

Spread the Warmth with our Mitten Tree

Donations accepted through January 2 Patrons can bring in new mittens, gloves, hats, scarves or socks and hang them on our Mitten Tree in the Children’s Room. The items will be donated to local agencies for distribution to children and adults in need throughout the community. Please drop your donations off at the Library during normal business hours.

VITA Tax Assistance via Zoom

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program provided by Bethpage Federal Credit Union will be conducted virtually for the 2023 Tax Season. Services will be available to taxpayers by visiting lovebethpage. com/vita and completing the “Bethpage Virtual VITA Application.” The application will be available January 18

and space is limited. The VITA program will assist tax return applicants who meet the necessary criteria from the beginning of February through the first week of April. Registration is required.

Supportive Services for Veteran Families

The goal of SSVF (Supportive Services for Veteran Families) is to assist Veterans in achieving self-sufficiency, long term housing stability and an improved quality of life. SSVF is able to provide an array of support services to assist Veterans by addressing the root causes of homelessness. SSVF can also connect participants to health care, daily living services, personal financial planning, transportation, employment search assistance and child

care. SSVF can also assist families who may be facing homelessness, by offering financial assistance on a caseby-case basis. Registration not required.

Winter Bird Watching

Long Island is a great birding spot in the winter! Get the lowdown on local sites, trails, and habitats to observe various birds in the area this season, including shorebirds, waterfowl, and owls. Lindenhurst Moose Lodge Celebrates Its 70th Anniversary

On October 15th, 2022, the Lindenhurst Moose Lodge celebrated their 70th anniversary with a dinner at the lodge. For the occasion, they did a journal book where ads were sold in the journal. Merchants

that took an ad were given a certificate of appreciation or a plaque, depending on the cost. Ads that were $100 received a certificate and a plaque was given for $150 or more. The Lindenhurst Moose Lodge delivered

each certificate and plaque to all merchants who purchased an ad. Some of the recipients included Mr. G’s Pizzeria, Popeyes, Lindenhurst Funeral Home, and in support of Mayor Mike Lavorata.

Copiague Launches New Civics Initiative

in the state that is now offering the Seal of Civic Readiness distinction on high school diplomas. The

Seal of Civic Readiness is a formal recognition that a student has attained a high level of proficiency in terms

of civic knowledge, civic skills, civic mindset and civic experiences. To be awarded the seal, students need to earn points throughout their middle school and high school years that demonstrate civic knowledge and civic participation.

As part of this initiative, all seventh graders and select eighth graders in the Copiague Middle School will work toward completing a

civics capstone project in their social studies classes. During these projects, students will identify, research and develop an action plan related to an issue or problem in the community. By completing this capstone project, students can be awarded one point toward earning the Seal of Civic Readiness before they enter high school.

According to Dr. Allison Weller, Copiague Middle School social studies chair, the ultimate goal of the project is to provide students with a multitude of learning activities and research skills that will allow them to develop civic knowledge and civic mindsets so as to better prepare them to become informed and engaged citizens at the local, state and national levels.

Copiague School District Appoints Two New Administrators

Copiague School District has announced two new administrative appointments. Karla Cangelosi, who previously served as the district’s executive director for instructional support for the 2021-2022 school year, has been named deputy superintendent, effective Sept. 7. Additionally, Jason Strumwasser has been named the district’s new director of technology, effective Nov. 7.

Ms. Cangelosi has been a part of the Copiague School District since 1999, first as an elementary teacher at Great Neck Road then transitioning to a reading teacher in 2006 and assistant principal in 2011. She served as the principal of Great Neck Road from 2015-2021. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from Dowling College and a master’s degree from LIU Post.

Ms. Cangelosi also has an educational leadership certification from Stony Brook University.

“I have been working in the Copiague School District since 1999,” Ms. Cangelosi said.

“Throughout my career I have learned and grown from a group of talented administrators. I have been beyond fortunate

during my career in Copiague to work with such amazing students, families and staff. I am honored and humbled to have the opportunity to continue working with the Copiague community in this new capacity.”

Mr. Strumwasser joins the Copiague School District from the Irvington School District, where he worked as the director of technology since 2019. During the past 10 years, he also held various educational technology positions at Challenge Preparatory Charter School and Educate, LLC. Mr. Strumwasser holds a Bachelor of Arts in political science from SUNY Binghamton. He also has two master’s degrees in education –one from LIU Post in educational technology and one from Hofstra University in secondary education/social studies. He has an advanced certificate in school building leadership from the College of Saint Rose.

“I’m thrilled to be a part of the Copiague Schools community and look forward to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to continue to help integrate technology in a meaningful way to extend, enhance and engage all users,” Mr. Strumwasser said.

Celebrating Its Student-Athletes In Copiague

To honor and celebrate the accomplishments of its student-athletes, the Copiague School District held its annual Fall Sports Awards Night on Nov. 15 at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School. Sponsored by the Booster Club, student-athletes in gymnastics, girls soccer, boys soccer, field hockey, girls tennis, volleyball, cross-country and football were recognized for their dedication to their sports by family members, coaches, Copiague School

District administrators and members of the board of education.

Throughout the night, coaches praised the student-athletes for their success and distributed individual awards, including the Coaches’ Award, Most Improved and the MVP award, to worthy receipients. Six special memorial awards were handed out to outstanding athletes for demonstrating leadership on and off the field. Zachary Korba (crosscountry) was presented

with the Christopher Urban Award, and Isabella Torres (gymnastics) was the recipient of the Dolores Sandefur Award. The Barbara Day Award was given to Darlin Delcid Calderon (field hockey), and Kayla Higueros (volleyball) received the Debra Tekosky Award. Ashley Matute (girls soccer) was presented with the Michael S. Cohen Award and Ashley Hernandez (girls soccer) was the recipient of the Brittany Walsh Memorial Award.

External Diploma Program

The National External Diploma Program offers adults 21 and over, the opportunity to receive credit for their life experiences, and earn a high school equivalency diploma without the challenge of taking lengthy timed examinations. NEDP, is a

competency based program for students who are unable to attend classes or who prefer to work at home. Successful candidates for NEDP include former ESL students, students who have been out of school for prolonged periods of time, or students who fare

better without the structure of tests. This program is an alternative to other programs.

Local Artist Finds New Success

Kristen Hadjoglou, a local artist from Eastport, New York, truly offers something different to the marketplace. Her signature personalized hand-made coloring books are what really launched her career as an artist, but she has expanded to offer various other products as well.

“I was born an artist,” said Kristen. “I always knew that growing up. I attended Rhode Island School of Design, where I earned a Bachelors of Fine Art in Painting. From there, I worked in multiple industries where I was able to express myself creatively. Life surprisingly led me into obtaining a career as a Financial Advisor, which has been very fulfilling since helping others is something I’ve always been passionate about.” However, Hadjoglou never lost her passion for the arts.

As a long-time Eastport resident, she grew attached to many of the local businesses and what made the town so unique. “One day I drew a few pictures on a couple of pages as a gift for our local general store, and it quickly turned into an entire hand-drawn coloring book, which spotlighted the main destinations in the town. What started as a fun project

I worked on in my downtime turned into something that ended up being sold in local businesses and even on Amazon. People love to open up a physical book and see visuals that bring back special memories, and I love being a part of that.”

Since then, Kristen started her own company, Underdog Nation, where she sells her coloring books, stickers, clothing items, journals, puzzles and other fun gifts (such as crayons in the shape of people and stars)! With recent success, she is starting to focus more and more on her career as an artist. The best part is that Kristen can make something for any age group to enjoy.

“I recently finished a project with the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce, which was a custom coloring book that’s filled with drawings of local businesses. It brought the Chamber Members together in a special way and is being sold around

Patchogue.” Another special project Kristen recently produced is a personalized coloring book that was used by a local fireman’s foundation for fundraising efforts.

“If you dream it, I can probably find a way to make something fun with it,” said Kristen.

“Whether it’s a single page or a full book, everything I draw is by hand in my personal style and reflects how much I care about the project. I’ve been inspired by all things local and historic, and it’s been fun to find a new way to teach kids in our community about local history. Some other projects I’ve worked on came from my love of my Gen X childhood, whether that be vintage toys, movie quotes, thrift shopping or collecting. Each project differs, but I absolutely love what I do, and that means I usually get things done pretty fast! I’m living that dream phrase, ‘If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.’ Looks like I’m almost there.”
