RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY - The Copiague Chamber of Commerce recently held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of Wing It On! - Wings ’N Wiches at 854 Montauk Highway in the Merrineck Plaza Shopping Center in Copiague. For the first time since 2018, Copiague’s Great Neck Road Elementary School hosted its popular Veterans Day Breakfast on Nov. 10. Honored guests included members of the local V.F.W. and relatives of students who have served or are currently serving in the Armed Forces.

During the ceremony, attendees were treated to

performances and a video tribute. Performances included a patriotic kindergarten singalong, recitation of a poem by fifth graders and a musical tribute sung by the special Veterans Day chorus.

As an added touch, members of the student council took photos with polaroid cameras of the veterans and put them in a

frame as a special keepsake.

“Today, the students and staff of the Great Neck Road Elementary School proudly honored the members of the United States Armed Forces for all they have done to make the United States of America the great country in the world,” Principal Tameka Eason stated.

NYS-Sourced Food Brings Fresh Options To Copiague Students

Copiague School District’s food and nutrition program is now participating in a New York State initiative to provide locally sourced produce and meat from New York State farms.

The district has New York State Thursdays, where they will have several menu items that are from local New York State farms. According to MaryAnne Metzak, Copiague School District’s director of cafeteria

services, some items will be offered daily such as milk, yogurt and cheese sticks. “On Thursdays, we will have different dishes that feature New York sourced pasta, beef, chicken, fruits and vegetables.”

There are numerous benefits to implementing this type of program. Using food products from local sources supports local farmers and also provides healthy choices for students in school meal programs, while also

helping the local economy. The initiative is intended to provide healthy New York sourced food products, such as farm fresh products, to students as part of their lunch meal in school.

To incentivize school districts to use more New York State farm products, the initiative increases the reimbursement schools receive for lunches from 5.9 cents per meal to 25 cents per meal for any district that purchases at least 30%

of the ingredients for their school lunch program from New York farms.

At Copiague’s high school cafeteria, one

serving line will be dedicated to New York State certified goods. Ms. Metzak works closely with a co-op of other school

districts to help bring costs down. The menu will change each month, based on availability.

The Charity of the Month for November is Association for Mental Health and Wellness

As home to 72,000 military veterans, Suffolk County has more veterans than any of the other 61 counties in New York State. With Veterans Day occurring in November, this month is a fitting time to recognize local organizations that serve the veterans community, such as our Charity of the Month, the Association for Mental Health and Wellness (MHAW).

MHAW offers a wide spectrum of assistance to Suffolk County veterans in respect to affordable housing, medical and mental health assistance, peer support, and other services. This column focuses on MHAW’s permanent housing for veterans with support services.

In October of 2021, MHAW celebrated the opening of three new homes, adding to their capacity to offer permanent residences for formerly homeless veterans. The three houses became available through Suffolk County’s “Housing Our Homeless Heroes Act” where abandoned properties are transferred to non-profit organizations that serve at-risk and homeless veterans. The initiative is funded through New York State’s Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance’s “Homeless Housing and Assistance Program.”

Ashanta Murray, a Navy veteran of eight years with three young children, is now living in one of the homes. “I was so proud to serve in the Navy – and to come home and try to find housing was such a struggle,” Ms. Murray said. “To serve your country and come home to face homelessness should never happen. This home for me and my children has been such a blessing.”

Aside from a new home, veterans receive such support services as employment and training opportunities, counseling, peer support, independent living skills training, linkage to primary healthcare, substance use disorder treatment, mental healthcare, childcare and other benefits.

The goal of this kind of permanent housing and support services is to prevent

chronic illness, promote a healthy and safe environment, promote wellbeing, prevent mental health and substance use disorders and

to help veterans continue to live in their communities in a manner consistent with their abilities and goals. MHAW aims to purchase and rehab additional homes in the future.

“We owe our veterans deep gratitude and must ensure that they have the opportunity to thrive,” said Colleen Merlo, CEO of MHAW. “They cannot do that without safe and consistent housing. It is an honor to be part of this program.”

For several years, MHAW focused its attention on offering temporary housing for homeless veterans at a shelter in Yaphank. Through the efforts of MHAW along with community and government partners, Long Island has made significant strides in addressing homelessness among veterans in recent years. “We have reached a point where when a veteran is homeless, they do not remain homeless for very long,” said Ms. Merlo. “We are proud to have helped to support this trend through our affordable and permanent housing work as well as our focus on employment opportunities and support services to veterans and their families.”

New Boxing Club Launches At Copiague Middle School

NEW BOXING CLUB LAUNCHES - Copiague Middle School students are putting on their boxing gloves and getting fit after school thanks to a new cardio kickboxing class. The club meets every other week under the direction of Copiague Middle School physical education teacher Ms. Havdoglous. The club is open to all middle school students and teaches the basics of boxing while burning calories and having fun. Suffolk County PAL sponsored the program and purchased all the equipment for the club.
