United States Army

Serving to protect the freedom of the seas, the Navy is another branch of the military that reports directly to the Department of Defense. Among its many missions, the U.S. Navy serves to make the seas safe for travel and trade.

United States Air Force

The Air Force also reports directly to the Department of Defense and trains for and maintains global superiority in air, space and cyberspace. Air Force personnel fly planes, helicopters and even satellites.

United States Marine Corps

The Marine Corps is a component of the Department of the Navy. It carries out global missions on both sea and shore, and serves as an expeditionary force.

Marines are a rapid-reaction team and are usually the first boots on the ground in a conflict.

United States Coast Guard

The Coast Guard safeguards maritime interests through both civil and military missions. The Coast Guard operates around the world and in domestic waterways and ports.

United States Army National Guard

The oldest branch of the U.S. military, the National Guard serves as a complementary force to active duty.

Those in the National Guard are trained to be versatile, providing for humanitarian aid, domestic emergencies, combat missions, and homeland security operations.

The Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard, Army Reserve, Coast Guard Reserve, and Navy Reserve are the other branches made up of servicemen and servicewomen who primarily work civilian jobs but may be called to full-time military duty if necessary.

The U.S. Armed Forces are headed by the President of the United States. The Secretary of the Department of Defense reports directly to the Commander-in-Chief.

The DOD controls each military branch, except for the Coast Guard, which is overseen by the Department of Homeland Security.

November’s Charity of the Month is:

The Book Fairies is an organization located in Freeport, NY. Six years ago, founder Amy Zaslansky heard about a classroom that had no books to offer to its students.

Amy decided to start a book drive for used children’s books so she could hopefully be able to donate books to this classroom.

By word of mouth and hard work, this drive took off and resulted in a final donation of about 3,500 books!

Driven by her desire to make a difference in her community, Amy later created The Book Fairies, a 501C3 non-profit. The Book Fairies accepts donations of new and gently used books, and connects them with libraries, schools, veteran organizations, soup kitchens and more organizations throughout all five boroughs and on Long Island that do not have the funds to foster the love of reading.

Reading materials can not only foster literacy and academic success, but they can also provide a respite from personal struggles and nature a love of reading across age groups. 50% of schools that this organization works with does not have libraries. 64% of fourth graders in New York State read below their grade level. Books can be expensive and many people do not have the funds to afford reading material.

Thankfully, Book Fairies are there to help!

Their first year as a non-profit, The Book Fairies collected 35,000 books. As of today, they have surpassed 1.4 million books collected!

They function out of their main office in Freeport, but they also work with 40 different special needs sites that pickup book donations and bring them to their office. Every book that they collect goes through sorting, their process of thoroughly examining the type of book and condition it’s in. With only 2 staff members, The Book Fairies heavily relies on the work of selfless volunteers, who generously give of their time to help this charity! The Book Fairies receive help from about 1,500 volunteers each year!

Because of their book donations, many people have been able to experience the joy of reading. One local school that received many book donations through this organization in turn saw their school wide reading level increase 400%!

If you would like to get involved with The Book Fairies, you can! They are in need of sorting volunteers to come to their Freeport location on one of their sorting days (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) and help sort through all their current book donations. First time volunteers will go through a brief training for about 10-15 minutes and then they can continue to volunteer without addtional training as much as they would like. If you are 13 or older you can come alone and if you are younger than 13 you will need a guardian to accompany you. If you’re interested in volunteering as a sorter, there is no need to reserve your space. Simply show up at their Freeport location (70 North Main St. Back Entrance) on one of their sorting days between 10AM and 3PM! Additionally, book donations are always welcome! If you would like to donate books, you can do so at their Freeport location during those same sorting hours or you can drop off books at any time behind their office at their book-drop location.

You can also visit one of their local book donation sites or arrange for your books to be picked up if you have five or more boxes of donations! Also, if you are interested in supporting their mission and donating financially, you can simply donate to their cause on their website at www.TheBookFairies.org/Donate.

When people ask me how I landed my first job in journalism, I often have to laugh and say, “I didn’t. I made my own job.” Or as I like to put it, “No one offered me a seat at the table. I had to get out some wood, a hammer and nails, and build my own chair.” It was the winter of 2005 and I happened to have a friend who was getting into the arena of online press release distribution. I inquired if he was planning to add any articles to the mix, and offered up my writing services free of charge.

I hadn’t yet written professionally, but I knew a bit about writing and a bit about the entertainment industry.

When I was asked to pitch the creative direction for an editorial (articles) portion of his newswire, I suggested interviewing celebrities and newsmakers.

Since I wasn’t yet asking for any money, I got a half-hearted greenlight. “If you can make it happen, then you can run it,” I was told. The very first interview I

landed is still burned on my brain.

It was one of the cast members from the very first season of The Apprentice. At the time, thirteen years ago, it felt like quite a feat to get anyone notable to speak with me for an interview.

My first handful of interviews left me giddy with excitement in a rather childish way, mostly because I couldn’t believe that by simply declaring that I was going to become something, it actually began to happen. Before I knew it, I was interviewing talk show hosts, media personalities; a musician here, an actor there.

The ball was starting to roll.

After eight years and more than one hundred interviews that eventually rose to the level of Oscar winners, Emmy winners, Grammy winners and U.S. presidential candidates, I parted ways from this original position.

For quite a while I felt certain that an opportunity like that would never come my way again.

Time went by (five years to be exact), when I had an epiphany.

Nobody had given me that initial opportunity. I created it, myself.

Completing the first writing assignment of the year was a milestone moment for kindergartners at Northeast Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District.

Children proudly marched around the building with their non-fiction pieces during a celebratory parade on Oct. 19.

Students wrote short narrative pieces as part of their introduction to Writer’s Workshop, an

initiative that creates person writing experiences through the selfselection of topics. For their initial assignment, kindergartners could pick any memory or special moment in their lives to share.

“Celebration,” with the well-known lyric, “Celebrate good times, come on!” played over the loudspeaker during the parade. Three students were then chosen to share

Becoming Good Writers their pieces with the entire school. All of the young writers took their stories home to read to family members.

“They’re writers now, and we wanted to celebrate that,” said instructional coach Theresa McCormack, adding that kindergartners will complete books with a cover sheet and three pages of content as part of their next unit of study.

BUILDER CLUB MAKING STRIDES - Copiague Middle School’s Builders Club participated in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk at Jones Beach on Oct. 21. SOUTH SHORE LIVING - South Shore Living, a local lifestyle magazine, recently opened their Copiague offices. At their grand opening, owner and president Janet Lombardo, and vice president Sharon Fattoruso were joined by family, friends, public officials and chamber members. They received a proclamation from Senator John Brooks, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Assemblywoman Jean-Pierre and Babylon Town Supervisor, Rich Schaffer.

Letting their taste buds do the work, kindergarten students in Marissa Krause’s class at Deauville Gardens West Elementary School in the Copiague School District held an apple tasting on October

12th.

After learning about all the different parts of the apple, the students had a lesson on the various types of apples as well. They taste-tested four varieties of apples and brainstormed

words to describe them.

Afterward, the students colored their own apple to reflect their favorite choice. As a class, they graphed the favorite colors and tallied up the results.

Beautiful Buddy Bench When someone is need of friend at Northwest Elementary School, all they have to do is go to the buddy bench. The BEAUTIFUL BUDDY BENCH - Northwest Elementary School third-graders with Amityville Union Free the new buddy bench that was donated by the Amityville Kiwanis Club. The bench is located between the playground and blacktop area, so children can find a playmate during recess. A child is supposed to go to the buddy bench with a

The music program at Copiague Middle School is off to a successful start for the new school year. Two new staff members – Kevin Miller (instrumental and general music) and Diana Cotrone (general music) – have joined the Copiague Middle School’s music department.

This year, the instrumental and vocal programs have nominated 35 students to the Division I and II All County Festivals in March. Music teacher Courtney Folan takes on a new full-time role as director of choirs and the middle school musical.

The first female coach in the history of the New York Jets provided words of encouragement to students at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District on Oct. 29.

Collette Smith, a coaching intern who worked with the defensive backs during the 2017 training camp, was the keynote speaker to kick off the school’s annual College and Career Week.

Ms. Smith was a professional football player with the New York Sharks in the Women’s Alliance, beginning her threeyear career at 42 before coaching. She became only the third female coach in NFL history and the first African-American woman to coach. After her stint

with the Jets, she founded Believe N You and serves as a motivational speaker.

During assemblies for fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders, Ms. Smith encouraged students to believe in themselves and understand that they can accomplish anything they want. She told students her motto, “Making tomorrow better today,” to remind them that the steps they take now can lead them to future success. Working hard in school, treating others respectfully and making healthy choices are among those steps, she said.

Principal Robyn Santiago said the goal of the program was to boost selfesteem and inspire each child to be his or her own personal cheerleader.

Fourth-graders Liana Diaz, Grace Lewis, Sarai Mullings, Morgen Slinger and Kimberly Torres joined their peers from across Suffolk County for a day of musical experiences.
