The Charity of the Month for October is: The Cemetery of Lost Souls (lostsoulsli.com) Benefitting Melissa’s Wish The Cemetery of Lost Souls is a grass roots organization that gears up each year to create an elaborate Haunted House on the founder’s property, located at 350 Broadway in Massapequa Park. Every bit of money raised through their annual event (admission, donations, sponsorships, etc.) is given to a chosen charity.

They have raised a lot of money over the years in donations alone and have donated to charities such as Autism Speaks, The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Ronald McDonald House Charities and Long Island Cares.

This year they are bringing the community a new interactive experience with the second Lost Souls Walk-Thru haunt, new rooms, new scares and new thrills! Each event has been going great, with up to hundreds of guests each night! The remaining events will run on October 31 and November 1-2 from 7PM-11:30PM. On Halloween, their event will be kid-friendly! There will be no actors and walk through tours of their haunted house will be given.

The chosen charity for 2019 is Melissa’s Wish, a nonprofit organization founded with the purpose of providing short term, nonmedical financial aid in the form of a grant to caregivers who are assisting those afflicted with a serious illness, injury or end of life event.

After explaining the significance of each piece of artwork, students went outside to recreate it. Two groups focused on Leonardo Da Vinci, with one replicating “The Last Supper” and another drawing the “Mona Lisa.” A third group focused on the Northern Renaissance

and depicted Jan van Eyck’s “The Arnolfini Portrait.” by Jan van Eyck.

Teacher Matthew Tomasi said this is the third year students from the AP European History class have completed this project and they enjoy the experience of recreating famous artwork from centuries ago.

6 Tricks For Storing Halloween Treats

Halloween is a favorite day for many children and even a number of adults.

Halloween offers revelers the opportunity to dress up in costume, play tricks on unsuspecting individuals and cap off the day with treasure troves of candy.

Approximately 600 million pounds of Halloween candy is sold each year in the United States. Around 90 million pounds of that is chocolate. The National Retail Foundation notes that more than two billion dollars is spent on candy come Halloween. But most of that candy will never be eaten. Many households take in more candy than they know what to do with on Halloween. Couple that with any leftover candy that may not have been grabbed by trick-ortreaters, and that’s quite a bounty of lollipops, chocolate bars, candy corn and taffy to manage.

Rather than relegate candy to the trash can, proper storage and some other tips can preserve treats long after Halloween has come and gone.

Keep original packaging. The wrappers used to house the candy were designed to keep it fresh. Candy that has been exposed to the elements will degrade faster. When original packaging is unavailable, glass or plastic containers with airtight lids can keep Halloween candy fresher, longer.

5. Manage moisture.

Candies like mints, caramels and hard candies can absorb moisture. They should not be mixed with other candies that can lose moisture, such as fudge and creamy confections.

The NCA notes that hard candies can stay hard if sprinkled with finely ground sugar and stored in airtight containers.

6. Use candy in other ways. If eating chocolate bar after chocolate bar becomes tiresome, repurpose candy in different recipes. Chocolate can replace chips or morsels in cookies. Use hard candies to garnish cakes. Melt down caramels to use for ice cream toppings or chop up nutty candies to make your own sundae toppings.

Consume candy that is full of nuts first. You can try freezing candy containing nuts, but there is no guarantee the texture will remain the same upon thawing.

2. Keep an eye on chocolate.

Chocolate needs to be kept under cool conditions to prolong its shelf life. The National Confectioners Association says dark chocolate can be kept for one to two years if wrapped in foil and stored in a cool, dark and dry place, such as a pantry.

Milk and white chocolate have a more limited storage time of no more than eight to 10 months. Hershey’s does not recommend putting chocolate in the refrigerator, as doing so can affect texture.

3. Candy corn can endure. This symbol of the season is a durable treat. If left in the original and unopened packaging, candy corn can last a few years. The manufacturer of Smarties says that its candy can last up to three years if unopened. The cooler and drier the conditions for storing the candies, the better.

collected and distributed approximately 185,000 school supplies including backpacks, notebooks, binders, rulers, pens, pencils and more.

“We want children to have the best start to the school year so they can be successful,” she said.

Middle school social worker Beatriz Offitto said that this year was the first time Amityville participated in Stuff-A-Bus. She said that the donations will be provided to any child in need of supplies, and also will be given out to new students enrolling at the school. After the items were sorted by students from the SADD club, supplies more appropriate for younger students were delivered to Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School.

The College Board recently recognized 63 current seniors and Class of 2019 graduates as Advanced Placement Scholars.

With an average score of at least 4 on all AP exams taken and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams, 2019 graduates Aaron Eng, Abigail Romero and Owen Rosenberg were named National AP Scholars.

Sixteen past and current students were named AP Scholars with Distinction for earning average scores of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. They are: Alfred Barredo, Julia

The Copiague Teachers Association donated to Circle of Love and the local food pantry for their Thanksgiving outreach on behalf of the board. The Copiague Supervisors donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and Copiague Association of Principals gave a donation to Friends of Karen, an organization which benefits children with cancer or other lifethreatening diseases.

Mrs. Iris Zervos, a resident of Copiague, LI., died October 17, 2019 at Good Samaritan Hospital, West Islip, LI. She was 91 years old. Mrs. Zervos was born on August 9, 1928 in Glen Dale, West Virginia to Emil and Ruth (Allman) Sommer.

In addition to caring for her family Iris was employed by the Copiague, LI School District preparing and serving food to the students and faculty. Senior advocates are County representatives who come out into the community and assist seniors with information gathering, completion of eligibility or recertification applications and referrals to appropriate community agencies.

NFPA offers these tips to stay safe during the spooky season: Costumes: Avoid fabric that billows or trails behind you, as these can easily ignite. If you are making your own costume, avoid loosely woven fabrics like linen and cotton, which can be very flammable.

Decorations: Many common decorations like cornstalks, crepe paper, and dried flowers are very flammable. Keep these and similar decorations far away from any open flames or heat sources,

like candles, heaters, and light bulbs.

Candles: Using candles as decoration can be risky if not done correctly. Keep them in a well- attended area out of the path of potential trick-or-treaters.
