The U.S. Small Business Administration says $48 out of every $100 spent at a small business stays in the community. On the flip side, when a person spends $100 at a big-box store or a national chain, only $14 remains in the community. Local businesses are more likely to utilize other local businesses, such as banks, service providers and even farms. Small businesses also pay employees,
whom are local and shop local, thereby keeping even more dollars in their communities. Did You Know?

Kiwanis Club Of Copiague Oktoberfest

KIWANIS CLUB OF COPIAGUE OKTOBERFEST - On Sunday, October 9th, the Kiwanis Club Of Copiague held an Oktoberfest at Tanner Park, to honor Marie (Mrs. Claus) Odell. The goal was to collect food for Our Lady of the Assumption and the Town of Babylon food pantries. It was a beautiful day. The Fire Department brought their trucks for public display and offered handouts to the kids. The Boy Scouts were there and played games. The famous band, Onwined, performed and many line danced to their music. There were vendors, and food trucks and the Kiwanis sold pumpkins and apples. Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Councilman Tony Martinez, and Councilman DuWayne Gregory also attended to honor Marie and present a Pediatric Trauma Kit that the Copiague Kiwanis purchased for the Copiague Fire Department. Marie was known for making baskets, that she paid for and donated for raffles. It was very fitting that her Daughter-in-law Chris made arrangements for two baskets to be raffled off in Marie’s name.

Your Vote Is Your Voice

As a member of the League of Women Voters (LWV), a 102 year old nonpartisan organization that encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government, this is my “busy season.” With my LWV colleagues, all volunteers, I speak to groups, answer countless questions, organize and moderate debates, and write articles; all as outreach during election season. Additionally, we encourage all citizens to vote responsibly in every election in which they are eligible, whether that be fire districts, libraries, school districts, local, state or federal. Your vote is your voice and I urge you to use it this Election Day, Tuesday, November 8th. Below is some significant information to keep in mind:

• Be sure you are registered to vote prior to heading to the polls.

• Because of redistricting, mandated by the US Constitution after the (2020) census, some of your district numbers may have changed! You can find your polling place easily on the NYS Board of Elections (BOE) website at www.voterlookup. elections.ny.gov. If you don’t have access to the internet, go to your local public library, where you can find assistance to get on one of their computers. Your information is private.

• You may have applied for an absentee ballot. If you plan to vote this way, the same website allows you to track your ballot to be sure it’s been received and will be counted by your county’s BOE. With a new tracking system now in place, if you have applied for an absentee ballot, but you decide you’d rather vote in person, you will not be able to cast your vote in a machine during early voting or on Election Day. Instead, you’ll be given an “affidavit ballot” and the BOE will check your records

to confirm whether or not your absentee ballot was received. This is to ensure no one’s vote is counted twice.

• This year you’ll be voting for your local member of the House of Representatives, one US Senator, NYS Governor and Lt. Governor and your local member of the NYS Senate and NYS Assembly. In Suffolk County, you’ll also vote for County Comptroller and County Clerk. There may be some local races on the ballot too.

• There is a NYS Environmental Bond proposition on the back of your ballot. If approved, this would allow the NYS Comptroller to issue and sell $4.2million in bonds to be used to fund environmental protection, natural restoration, resiliency, and clean energy projects. This is not a tax, investors buy NYS bonds.

• Suffolk County also has a countywide proposition clarifying the wording of the term limits law and four Suffolk townships have local propositions too. Nassau does not have a county proposition on this year’s ballot.

Please plan ahead; learn about the candidates and know what’s on your ballot. You can visit www.vote411. org, enter your address (no need for your name or personal info) and you will see the offices, candidates, and propositions that will be on the ballot. All candidates were sent questions and given the opportunity to answer them on the site; sometimes candidates refuse to respond, this is indicated. No one ever should be too busy, too disinterested or even too frustrated to vote. Your vote is your hard-earned right, but also your obligation as an American citizen.

Dominican Village’s Fall Frenzy Auction

RECOGNIZED FOR THEIR DEDICATION TO STUDENTS - For its unwavering support of the students at Copiague School District, the board of education was recognized during the Oct. 17 meeting. The New York State School Board Association designates the week of Oct. 17-21 as School Board Recognition Week. The recognitions kicked off with a performance by the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Madrigal Choir. Copiague’s clerical unit made a donation to the Neil Schweitzer Scholarship Fund in the board’s name, while Copiague Teachers Association donated to three local food pantries. The Copiague Association of Supervisors donated to the district’s Eagle’s Nest food pantry and the Copiague Association of Principals donated funds to the Chris Madden Scholarship. Copiague PTA Council provided refreshments for the celebration and donated to the American Association of Suicide Prevention and the Carmyne Payton Memorial Scholarship. From left, Copiague School District’s Board of Education members Rosemary Natoli, Brian J. Sales, Kenneth Urban, Anthony S. Pepe, Michael Higgins and Ledy Torres were honored during the Oct. 17 meeting. Board member Paul Daubel is missing from photo. Photo courtesy of Copiague School District

Plans are well underway for Dominican Village’s annual Fall Frenzy Auction (formerly known as the Chinese Auction Extravaganza).

There will be countless raffle baskets with separate raffles for “gold prizes” including flat-screen TVs, designer handbags/wallets, lottery trees, gift cards, and more. The event will also include a wine grab raffle.

Register early for the dinner auction to be held Friday, November 4th from

6:00 – 10:00 p.m. located on the grounds of Dominican Village in the Helen Butler Hall. The general public is invited to view and submit raffle chances on Thursday, November 3rd, and on the same day of the main event, from 12:00 – 4:00 p.m. in the Helen Butler Hall. Winners need not be present.

It takes several months for a group of exceptional volunteers to coordinate, wrap, and record the many baskets for raffles, so we

are asking our friends and supporters for the following new items large baskets, children’s bikes, board games, gift cards, wine, and mystery gifts.

Donation items may be dropped off daily at Dominican Village, 565 Albany Avenue, Amityville, NY. Attn: Community Relations Dept. As we celebrate 30 years of dedicated service to our residents and community, we look forward to seeing you at the event.

Black Tea Drinkers

A small study from researchers at University College London found that black tea drinkers had significantly lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol than non-tea drinkers within 50 minutes of experiencing a stress-inducing event. The study also found that black tea drinkers expressed themselves in a more relaxed way than non-tea drinkers within 50 minutes of a stressful experience.

Assemblywoman

Posthumously Honors Bolivar Rodriguez

Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean - Pierre (D-Wheatley Heights)

joined Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer in honoring Bolivar Rodriguez in recognition of his contributions to the Copiague community as part of Hispanic Heritage month.

Rodriguez was the owner of the Vaquita Deli Corp. in Copiague for

29 years and was a resident of Amityville for over 30 years. He moved to Amityville from the Dominican Republic, and in 1993, he bought the property that would become Vaquita Deli. This establishment is a known staple and is treasured by community— loved for its fresh and hot Hispanic-American fusion

of food and the kindness and generosity of Mr. Rodriguez himself. Unfortunately, Mr. Rodriguez tragically lost his life almost two years ago on December 12, 2020 in a shooting which took place within the deli itself. His legacy lives on through his siblings, wife, children and grandchildren.

“Bolivar wasn’t just a

businessman trying to make ends meet—he was somebody who gave back as much as he received from the community he called home,” said Jean-Pierre.

“This was a man who was an incredibly important, wellknown and loved figure in the Copiague community.

He always gave aid to churches and individuals

who didn’t have enough to buy from his business. His loss was a tragedy not just to the family and his business, but to the community as a whole. The least we can do as elected officials is officially recognize his impact on all of us here in the community and present that recognition to his family, friends and loved ones.”

On The 80th Anniversary Of The Sherman Tank, The Museum Of American Armor Seeks Those Who Crewed These Legendary Vehicles

On the 80th anniversary of the iconic Sherman tank that spearheaded America’s liberation of Europe during

World War II, the Museum of American Armor is seeking to honor those veterans who crewed these legendary

vehicles along their families.

The Armor Museum has put out an “All Points Bulletin” for Sherman tank

families to join the Armor Museum in observing the milestone anniversary on Thursday, November 10th at 12 Noon, on the eve of Veterans Day 2022.

“Sadly, we recognize that many of the Sherman tank crews are gone but their legacy is lasting. The invitation is out to all surviving Sherman tankers but we are also asking the families of Sherman veterans to join us in ceremonies that mark the 80th anniversary of when this iconic tank was introduced into combat,” stated Kevin Carroll, the Armor Museum’s Community Affairs Director.

Armor Museum’s founder and president Lawrence Kadish stated, “The Armor Museum continues to offer a powerful presentation that keeps alive the legacy of our nation’s military and the gift of freedom they have given all of us. The Sherman tank is an important part of that

story and so we are asking tanker veterans or their survivors to come forward and help us preserve their legacy.”

In recognition of its considerable importance, the Armor Museum’s acquisition of a Sherman tank was one of the first actions undertaken by Mr. Kadish when he undertook the creation of the museum.

“You can’t effectively tell the story of American courage during World War II without this particular tank on operational display,” observed Mr. Kadish.

Some 50,000 Sherman tanks were built by nearly a dozen different manufacturers during World War II, making them available to the Allies as well as American forces fighting in Europe and the Pacific. While not as well armed as its German opponents, the Sherman proved to be reliable, relatively fast, and

produced in great numbers. As combat evolved during the conflict American tankers changes their tactics to confront and defeat the enemy’s superior armor.

Michael Sapraicone, Senior Armor Museum Trustee said, “This museum is a unique commitment by public and private sectors to preserve and present a seminal chapter in the history of our world that is still defining current events around the globe. But to put that in perspective, we need to hear from our Sherman veterans and their families as we pay tribute to a weapon that was manned by brave Americans nearly a century ago.”

Sherman veterans or their families are invited to reach out to the museum through its web site, www. museumofamericanarmor. com to confirm their attendance.

Helping You Help Others

The Charity of the Month for October is Helen Keller Services

Helen Keller Services (HKS), a nonprofit organization with locations across Long Island and the nation, works with thousands of individuals who are blind, have low vision, are DeafBlind or have combined hearing and vision loss to live, work and thrive in their community of choice.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month, which celebrates the contributions of America’s workers with disabilities past and present and showcases supportive, inclusive employment policies and practices.

Helen Keller Services, located in Port Washington, recently held its 3rd annual National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) event, celebrating The US Department of Labor’s theme, “Disability: Part of the Equity Equation”, recognizing the vital role people with disabilities play in making the nation’s workforce diverse and inclusive.

“Accessibility to job opportunities affects everyone and should be integral to hiring practices, and not just an afterthought,” said Joseph Melillo, National Business & Employment Relations Specialist at Helen Keller Services. “With equal access, people who are blind, have low vision, or are DeafBlind can unlock their inner ability.”

Highlights of the event included a keynote address from Kathy West-Evans, Director of Business Relations, Council of State Administrators of Vocational Rehabilitation (CSAVR)/ National Employment Team (NET), and experts who spoke about disability inclusion, use of technology and the talents of the DeafBlind community in the workplace.

“The DeafBlind community is just like the rest of us; they simply communicate differently. And like the rest of us, they have unique gifts and talents to share that can

If your nonprofit would like

make our world a more diverse and vibrant place to work and live,” said Sue Ruzenski, CEO of Helen Keller Services.

Every year, Helen Keller Services spotlights companies that work with the DeafBlind community at its Access-Ability Awards, held in June.

“We recognize leaders who have made it their business to take action and advance accessibility within their companies or organizations and for the people they serve,” said Sue Ruzenski, CEO of Helen Keller Services. “We continue to make progress towards greater accessibility and inclusivity for and among the communities we work with, but there is still a great deal more of work to be done.”

If you would like to get involved with this organization, there are various opportunities to do so! HKS is actively hiring for multiple positions and they’re also accepting new volunteers. Your HKS experience, whether through a paid or volunteer position, will no doubt be rewarding on a personal level. As a volunteer, you’ll have the opportunity to make meaningful connections with blind or DeafBlind individuals, helping to enhance their quality of life and to expand their social circles. Additionally, you can donate to HKS anytime on their website.

Senator Brooks’ Funding Grant To Provide 28,000 Meals To Long Island Homeless Community

Senator John E. Brooks (SD-8) was proud to present a funding grant of $25,000 to Long Island Cares – The Harry Chapin Food Bank to help support their Hope for the Homeless program. Since its creation in 1980 by the late Harry Chapin, Long Island Cares had been on a mission to feed Long Island’s community and to stamp out the root causes of hunger. Their Hope for the Homeless program currently provides mobile outreach, including emergency food, supplies, and linkages to other resources, to approximately 800 homeless individuals – many of them veterans – on a monthly basis. In August 2022 alone, the Hope for the Homeless program distributed nearly 1,000 meals throughout

Nassau and Suffolk. When able, the organization also assists community members with securing housing or by providing housing referrals.

Having been involved with Long Island Cares since they were first established, Senator Brooks stated, “We are exceptionally fortunate that we have an agency like Long Island Cares that is able to reach those most in need, and that is so in tune with the needs of the most vulnerable members of our community, including our pets. I have seen the work they do — how many people they are actually able to help — and I have been to many of their facilities and have worked in their warehouse to get items ready. I know

the needs on Long Island are very high, so I just think it is a wonderful organization. I have seen firsthand the good work they do here, so I am very proud that I was able to secure this funding grant for them – anything I can do to help, I will do.”

Because of the funding grant that Senator Brooks was able to secure, Long Island Cares will be able to provide 33,750 pounds of food, or 28,000 meals, to be distributed throughout the Long Island Community. Founded in 2011, Hope for the Homeless provides ready-to-eat food and personal care items to the street homeless on a weekly basis. For further information, please visit https://www.licares.org/.
