The Charity of the Month for October is

Long Island Coalition for the Homeless www.addessthehomeless.org Long Island Coalition for the Homeless (LICH) was originally founded in 1985 as a grassroots local advocacy effort to bring nonprofits and other community partners together to unite around the cause of homelessness, seeking to expand and enhance services to meet local needs.

As a small local entity, LICH has always relied on partnerships and joint efforts in order to adequately provide support for those that were experiencing homelessness on Long Island.

This non-profit is excited to tell you about their 33rd Annual “Keys for the Homeless” Conference, which will be held on November 10, 2021 from 9am-3pm virtually. This year’s theme, “#StopInequity, Challenges Opportunities Resilience Equity for Homelessness”, was adopted from their experiences and challenges during the pandemic along with the opportunities that have been created in the face of those challenges, the resilience of those most affected by COVID and the need to ensure equity for our most vulnerable neighbors. The theme is a call to action and in their opinion, it’s long overdue.

Over time, homelessness has continued to become a growing community challenging, through deinstitutionalization, national de-funding of safety net programs in the 1980s, the war on drugs, housing market crashes, recessions, natural disasters and most significantly (as the number one cause of homelessness on Long Island and nation-wide) the extremely high costs of housing and other expenses to live on Long Island, amongst other things. The mission of LICH is to end homelessness on Long Island and alleviate the issues associated with homelessness and poverty for homeless and at risk persons in Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

American Cancer Society Announces Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walks on Long Island this October

MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER - Long Island will again unite in the fight against breast cancer with two Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks this year, on Sunday, October 17 at Jones Beach and Saturday, October 20 on Main Street in Riverhead. Photo credit: American Cancer Society Long Island, home to the largest Making Strides Against Breast Cancer movement in the United States, again will host two powerful Making Strides walks on Sunday, October 17, 2021 at Jones Beach State Park and Saturday, October 30, 2021 on Main Street in Riverhead, providing reimagined and new ways to support and fund the future of breast cancer research and programs.

Both events will be held in accordance with CDC and NY State guidelines to ensure the safety of all attendees. Last year’s walk became virtual events due to the pandemic. In 2019, an estimated 65,000 participants joined the effort raising more than $2.5 million.

The Society is requesting that all individuals sign up in advance to be kept abreast of important details, which will be updated regularly.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed among women in the U.S. In New York, the American Cancer Society estimates 17,540 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year and 2,510 will succumb to the disease. Nationwide, 2,650 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021.

HEALING A WRINKLED HEART - The kindergarten students in Ms. Nugget and Ms. Caputo’s class at Deauville Gardens West Elementary School in the Copiague School District learned about kindness by reading “Chrysanthemum,” by Kevin Henkes. In the book, the children make fun of Chrysanthemum’s name. The kindergarten students each were given a paper heart, and each time Chrysanthemum was teased, they crumbled up the heart. At the end of the story, the students were asked to fix the crumpled heart and make it smooth and straight again. The class discussed how unkind words can wrinkle someone’s heart, and it’s not always easy to fix words or actions. Students were encouraged to think before they speak and use kind words. October is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual international campaign to shine light on the impact of breast cancer and show support for those who have been affected by the disease. “On Long Island alone, over 2,600 women are affected by breast cancer every year, 17 percent of them between the towns of Babylon and Islip,” according to Dr. Deb Salas-Lopez, senior vice president of community and population health at Northwell.
