Copiague High School ninth grader Jaiden Urbina will have his writing published thanks to his participation in a writing contest. Urbina submitted a piece of writing as part of Lucijan Jovic’s English class last year at Copiague Middle School. “Jaiden was passionate about this and came to extra help during his lunch period for several days prior to submitting his piece,” Mr. Jovic said. “He wrote a wonderful piece, and I am happy to share that he was selected for publication by the Young Writers Association.” Jaiden’s piece would be featured in a publication called “Unsolved Secrets Revealed.” His piece is called “Darkness is in the Eye of the Beholder,” a mystery genre. In honor of ItalianAmerican Heritage Month, Town of Babylon Councilman Anthony Manetta, Town of Babylon Town Clerk Gerry Compitello and the Constantino Brumidi Lodge will host the Town of Babylon Italian Food Festival on Saturday, October 14, 2023. Attendees will learn about
Town of Babylon ItalianAmerican history in the Town board room, enjoy food vendors from across Long Island and a DJ and live music from recording artist Angelo Venuto and explore a Cadillac car show. In addition, Councilman Manetta is conducting his sixth annual pasta and food sauce drive, and attendees are encouraged to bring
pasta and sauce donations to help their fellow Long Islanders in need.
The event will take place at Babylon Town Hall Great Lawn, 200 East Sunrise Highway in Lindenhurst, NY 11757
There will be additional parking with a free bus shuttle service at Lindenhurst Train Station.

G. O’Connell Copiague High School has three student-musicians selected to the 2023 Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association’s vocal jazz ensemble. This is a first for the school district. “This is such a tremendous opportunity for these students and our growing program,” said choral teacher and vocal jazz director Katherine Butera (pictured far right). Ms. Butera introduced the vocal jazz group at the high school last year and is excited to see the potential for this year. Shawn Smaldon (right) and Daniel Kister (left) were selected to the group, and Valery Cedeno (center) was chosen as an alternate. The concert is scheduled for Nov. 4 at East Islip High School. Eagle pride soared during the pep rally to kick off the celebrations on Friday. Even though the rain didn’t stop in time for the parade, the varsity football game went on as scheduled against the Newfield
Wolverines.
Students, staff, parents, community members, administrators and board of education members all made their way to the turf field to root on the Eagles. Despite their best efforts,
the Eagles didn’t capture the win.
During halftime, members of the homecoming court were introduced. To keep the crowd entertained, the halftime show consisted
of performances by the varsity cheerleaders and step team. Later that evening, the district hosted its Hall of Achievement ceremony at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School. Five new
members were honored for their achievements and contributions to the Copiague community.
