Navaretta and her agents kicked off their collection drive by first making contributions themselves and are now encouraging the Long Island community to join them in donating non-perishable food items and paper goods to help people in Texas who are facing overwhelming loss and destruction.

“I believe we all have a responsibility to be mindful of what is happening around our country and of those in need,” says Navaretta. “What happened in Texas hit home for so many of us as it could have happened to any of us here on Long Island. Whether we have loved ones living in Texas or not, we as human beings need to extend our help and support for others in need in whatever way possible. We invite Long Island residents to make donations to our collection drive so we can extend a helping hand for those in Texas who have lost so much as they begin their

The 3rd annual Outreach/John Brower, Jr. Foundation 5K Walk at Jones Beach to raise funds and awareness on the opioid crisis on Long Island will be held Saturday, October 7th, beginning at 10 a.m. The event is held each year to honor the memory of John Brower, Jr., who died in 2014 of an opiate overdoes at age 25. Proceeds from the walk support Outreach, the Queens and Long Island-based organization dedicated to helping teens and adults fight drug and alcohol addiction.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced the official launch of the “Experience the North Fork by Trolley” shuttle service that will operate for 10 straight Saturdays beginning September 9th and running through November 11th.

The scheduled service will be divided into two service phases: Phase one will service the Greenport loop from September 9th to October 7th, and Phase two will serve the MattituckPeconic loop from October 14th to November 11th.

“We are excited to introduce this new experiential trolley service on the North Fork to serve our residents and visitors,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone.

“Suffolk County’s North Fork is quickly becoming a top tourist destination and it is as scenic as it is historic. Our goal is to share this experience with our residents and visitors in a stress-free fashion that is important to enhancing

tourism in our region.”

The trolley service will cost $10 for standard allday pass, $3 for senior citizens, and kids under the age of three ride for free.

Customers are encourage to download the “Go North Fork” App to track the location of the trolley.

Tickets can be purchased in advance online at https:// www.hamptonluxuryliner. com/.

The trolley services will complement existing transit services such as ferries, the Long Island Rail Road, Suffolk Transit, and private bus services. In addition, they will provide an affordable and reliable connection between the North Fork’s unique downtowns, businesses and natural assets. Visitors will be able to leave their cars behind while experiencing North Fork wine country and the local farms, parks, B&B and shops that characterize this unique region.

The North Fork attracts visitors looking to experience its farms,

vineyards, fisheries, restaurants, shopping, and exceptional natural assets, including beaches, historic landmarks, and open spaces. As such, Suffolk County is supporting a $200,000 Empire State Development grant application to extend trolley services in 2018 for a full Spring to Fall season.

The application also proposed to extend trolley services into the Town of Riverhead.

Suffolk County Economic Development & Planning had been working with multiple partners in the region to help develop transportation options in the region that will reduce traffic and create convenient tourist experiences. These partners include the North Fork Promotion Council, the East End Tourism Alliance, the Long Island Wine Council, the Town of Southold, the Village of Greenport, and the Long Island Railroad.

Browers were impressed by the organization’s dedication to help those struggling with addiction.

They decided to target all the group’s fundraising for the agency. To date, the Brower family has donated more than $39,000 to Outreach.

“The Brower family is one of too many Long Island families who have experienced the heartbreak of opiate addiction,” said Kathleen Riddle, president of Outreach. “We join the Browers in their mission to do all we can to raise awareness for teens and young adults so additional families do not have to lose a loved one to substance abuse. The Brower family has been tremendously generous and devoted to the cause. We are enormously thankful for their support.”

“It’s been more than four years since we lost our son,” said John Brower, Sr., “but his memory is with us every day as is our

determination to continue fighting addiction. We will continue with these walks and our other foundation activities until we see a marked improvement in the heroin and opiate problem that continues to affect our communities.”

Autism Speaks Walk The Long Island Chapter of Autism Speaks, the world’s leading autism science and advocacy organization, will hold its 2017 Long Island Autism Speaks Walk event on Sunday, October 1st, at Jones Beach - Field 5.

Proceeds from Long Island 18th annual walk will support Autism Speaks’ mission to promote solutions, across the spectrum and throughout the life span, for the needs of individuals with autism and their families.

Autism Speaks Walk is the world’s largest fundraising event to enhance the lives of people with autism today and accelerate a spectrum of solutions for tomorrow.

The events are powered by the love of parents, grandparents, children, siblings, friends, relatives, and support providers for the special people in their lives living with autism. Funds raised help fuel innovative research and make connections to critical lifelong supports and services.

In recent years, Autism Speaks has made a significant impact in the Long Island area.

Through its Local Grants

Program, Autism Speaks has provided funding to innovative local service providers. They include: Long Island Advocacy Center, Inc., Long Island Children’s Museum, Adelphi University-Bridges to Adelphi Program and The Family Center for Autism – to name few for a total grant investment of $60,000 in 2016.

“Long Island Autism Speaks Walk is helping fund vital services and innovative solutions that improve quality of life for people with autism in our community,” said Eddie Russo, Autism Speaks Long Island Senior Coordinator. “We are eager to support crucial work by researchers, service providers, and medical experts, both close to home and all across the country.”

Alpha Xi Delta proudly serves as the North American sponsor of Autism Speaks Walk.

Since 2009, Alpha Xi Delta has raised more than $5 million dollars for Autism Speaks, and they currently participate at Autism Speaks Walk events nationwide. Alpha Xi Delta’s work not only generates vital funds for autism research, but

also raises awareness for autism. On World Autism Awareness Day in 2015, they lit more than a thousand buildings blue as part of Autism Speaks’ Light It Up Blue campaign in honor of the millions people affected by autism worldwide.

How drastic are the differences in perception from one person to another.

It’s funny how things seem to move in fast forward once the school year gets underway.

Halloween decorations have been out in full force for weeks, with Christmas not far behind. That spring cleaning that we’ve been putting off until fall is now begging for our attention. As the leaves begin to turn, can outdoor cleanups be far behind as well?

In the entertainment world, gone are the evenings of summer concerts under the stars, replaced instead by nights spent in front of

Pumpkin picking, apple picking, hayrides, corn mazes… so much to accomplish in so little time. And yet, there is always precisely the same amount of time. It’s all in how we choose to use it.

to complete, rather than taking a step back and simply experiencing each moment as it happens. There is very little we actually have to do; in fact, almost nothing is required within a particular time frame. And so, we can afford to relax a bit, to take our time transitioning, whether it is from one season to the next or something larger and more significant to our personal lives.

So, while the calendar may indicate autumn just a few days from now, that doesn’t mean we need to give up enjoying the warmth of the sun, or throw away our remaining summer plants in favor of mums and pumpkins.

All in good time. Autumn is a season of transition in itself, a cross-section of weather and activities, even fashion.

A season of plenty. Plenty to appreciate. Plenty to embrace.

LI Hops, a 43-acre farm located in the North Fork wine region of Long Island will again host the Long Island Fresh Hop Fest - the largest fresh hop fest on the east coast - on Saturday, September 23rd. The event will offer sampling of special locally brewed beers made with locally grown and harvested hops, many brewed in small batches for this event only.

Plus this year, attendees will also be able to enjoy locally crafted pumpkin beers like the Pumpkin Spice ale from Long Island’s newest brewery, Jamesport Farm Brewery; limited-release seasonal brews like Long Ireland Brewing Company’s Octoberfest, a Märzenstyle lager; or hopped cider from Stowe, Urban Farm Fermentory, Cidergeist, or Indian Ladder Farm Cidery and Brewery, visiting from the Hudson Valley.

The attendees will enjoy an afternoon of beer and cider sampling, hop farming education, and live music. The event will be held at the LI Hops farm located at 5873 Sound Ave, Riverhead, NY 11901 from 12:30 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 23rd.

“For us in the education business, this is our new year,” Amityville Union Free School District Superintendent Dr. Mary T. Kelly said in addressing the nearly 600 staff members that gathered in the high school auditorium for the district’s annual convocation on August 31st.

Stuffing the Bus United Way’s StuffA-Bus pulled up to Copiague School District’s administrative building packed with boxes of school supplies for the students of Copiague on September 11th.

More than 75 boxes were filled with supplies including backpacks, pens

and pencils, notebooks, lunch boxes, rulers, scissors, glue and more.

United Way’s Stuff-A-Bus campaign, now in its ninth year, collects donations and also has support from corporate partners.

Members of the Copiague Middle School Builders Club, the junior version of

the Key Club, were on hand to help unload the boxes when Educational Bus Transportation delivered the packed boxes. The Builders Club, along with adviser Maria Ostrofsky, will help unpack and sort the boxes to be delivered to the different schools in the next week.
