On an uncharacteristically cool morning for late August, the incoming class of 2020 at Amityville Memorial High School trickled into the auditorium. Students found their seats and awaited the start of their sophomore orientation.

Superintendent Dr. Mary Kelly took the podium and welcomed everyone, remarking that it seemed that their moving up ceremony wasn’t too long ago. She also introduced Amityville’s new high school principal, Maria Andreotti.

“We’re lucky to have her with us,” Dr. Kelly said.

Follow one of our present day Lighthouse Keepers on his rounds. This bottom to top tour takes you from the auxiliary generator and the Light Keepers workshop in the basement of the Keeper’s Quarters to the beacon in the lantern room of the lighthouse tower. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon echoed those sentiments and spoke about the importance of relationships in Copiague.

“The success of Copiague is because we all realize it’s about the relationships we build,” she said. “The first

thing you need to consider is how you are going to forge those relationships with students. You have the potential to make a difference every single day.”

Building principals introduced the new hires and offered well wishes for the upcoming school year. To get a better understanding of the community, the new teachers took a bus tour of the district. Kelly Urraro, the district’s director of technology, presented an overview of the available technology tools. On day two of the orientation, the new teachers had the opportunity to spend time in their buildings and meet with their colleagues.

Most of us reading this column have memories of Hurricane Sandy, and many people are still rebuilding from it all.

RACE TO THE FINISH - Ice-cream eating contestants at the 2017 Town of Babylon Beach Blast compete to finish first at Overlook Beach.

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer invited residents to Overlook Beach on Saturday, August 19th, for the Town’s annual Beach Blast. The event featured live music, raffles for charity, rides, games and even an ice cream-eating contest.

The weather made for a picture-perfect day for the Beach Blast this year.

Beachgoers lined Overlook for a late-summer visit to the ocean and pitched tents, stuck umbrellas in the sand and of course took a swim in the water.

The Town of Babylon lifeguard staff helped keep everyone safe while enjoying the waves. Over twenty children competed in this year’s ice-cream eating contest as they were cheered on by friends,

Winners were awarded by age group.

After dark, the festivities concluded with a fireworks display, a staple of the Beach Blast. Residents looked up and enjoyed the colorful display, which served as a proper sendoff to the 2017 summer season.

Prepping for the Year The Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Class of 2021 toured their new building, received their schedule, became acquainted with administrators and reconnected with their classmates during summer orientation on August 29th.

High school administrators, guidance counselors and teachers welcomed the incoming freshman class, along with their parents, as they received their schedules

and locker assignments for the upcoming school year.

Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Principal Joseph Agosta addressed the students and their families as they gathered in the auditorium for an informational session.

“This marks the first step in a very important journey,” Agosta said. “You are now being introduced to the most critical four years in your life that will help prepare you for college and your post-

secondary plans.”

Agosta answered some questions generated by students following the spring orientation and also had them preview a “day in the life” of a Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School freshman to give them a better understanding of the building and its workings.

Students ended the orientation with a guided tour of the building by members of one of the school’s 30 different clubs.
