101 Prep for Incoming Teachers The Amityville Union Free School District warmly greeted its 20 newest teachers, who are joining the district for the 2018-2019 school year.

Among the new staff are three elementary teachers, three English language arts teachers, three social studies teachers, two science teachers, two literacy teachers, a high school guidance counselor, a social worker; and French, music and ENL teachers.

The district also welcomes new instructional coaches at Park Avenue and Northwest elementary schools.

teacher orientation on August 27th at the Park North Administration Building. Superintendent Dr. Mary T. Kelly and board of education trustees greeted the group during a welcome breakfast.

Throughout the day, they learned about district protocols and policies, as well as technology services and professional development opportunities. Amityville prides itself on fostering a collegial environment in which teachers are encouraged to share their expertise by leading workshops for their colleagues.

about the history of Amityville from lifelong resident Ken Lang, before taking a trolley tour around the district, which included the village of Amityville, North Amityville and East Massapequa.

After lunch provided by the Amityville Teachers Association, the new staff visited their respective buildings for meetings with the principals.

Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction, Dr. Lois Etzel, provided them with goody bags featuring educational books, a district calendar and a supply every teacher needs: Post-it notes.

Acknowledgements I told myself I would take my time with this one, write it well in advance of deadline, try to encapsulate everything in one epic, closing chapter.

And yet, here I sit – 11:30 p.m. on the eve of my second to last day of work, staring at a mostly blank template as countless thoughts swirl in my brain.

My career, this portion of it, has been largely defined by my ability to transcribe a feeling on paper, to relate to readers from all walks of life by telling stories – of my life, of my surroundings and my observations of the people within them. Kelly Urraro, director of technology, presented an overview of technology tools available in the district.

During presentations on the second day, new staff members heard from district principals on setting the stage for success. They also learned about the culture of the Copiague School District and how to create a learning environment for English language learners.

At the conclusion of the orientation, staff members spent time with classroom teachers discussing best practices at their respective buildings.
