State Awards $660,000 To Federation Of Organizations For Programs That Combat Drug Addiction

The Federation of Organizations for the New York State Mentally Disabled, a multi-service, community-based social wellness agency based in West Babylon, has been awarded $660,000 towards further establishing its comprehensive outpatient treatment programs for those suffering from addiction, Senator Monica R. Martinez announced. The award stems from the state’s Opioid Settlement Fund and is part of a $5.8 million distribution to similar programs throughout New York State.

Programs receiving

this funding will offer both an outpatient treatment program and an opioid treatment program at the same location to facilitate broad, people-centered services - particularly for opioid use disorder.

“Integrating treatments and centralizing these programs makes them more easily accessible and increases their success rate,” said Senator Monica R. Martinez of the award. “Long Island continues to be in the midst of a severe opioid crisis,” she added. “We need programs like this that guide those suffering from substance use

disorders toward their road to recovery.”

Incorporated as a non-profit in 1972, the Federation of Organizations has since grown into a major health and human services agency providing a wide range of health and wellness services, senior and children’s services, housing, and support services for thousands of vulnerable community members on Long Island and New York City. Its Suffolk County community centers and clinics are located in Patchogue, Copiague, Medford, and Wyandanch.

Local Summer Senior Advocate Schedule

Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) is pleased to inform Babylon and Huntington residents about the local Suffolk County Office for the Aging Summer 2023 Senior Advocate Schedule. Senior advocates are County representatives who come out into the community and assist seniors with information gathering, completion of eligibility or recertification applications and referrals to appropriate community agencies.

“This is an excellent chance for senior citizens to get the assistance and information they need by connecting with the County’s senior advocates right in their own communities,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I hope all those interested in the services that the Suffolk County Office for the Aging provides will take advantage of this opportunity.”

John Farina JANUARY 13, 1936 – AUGUST 9, 2023

John Farina, 87, of Copiague, New York, entered into heaven on August 9, 2023. He was born on January 13, 1936, to Angelo and Carmela Farina.

John, the most loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather is survived by his wife, Yolanda; his sons, John, Anthony, and Vincent; his grandchildren, Deanna, Marissa, Emma, and Vincent; and his greatgrandchildren, Marek, Knox and Aria.

John joined the Army to serve his country in 1954, stationed in Germany with the 2nd Armored Division. Upon leaving the military, John met the love of his life, “his bride” who would stand by his side for 64 wonderful years on August 2. He retired from the Local 295 Teamsters, where he applied his hard work ethics delivering Air Cargo from JFK Airport to the local tristate areas. John and his family have been residents of Copiague since 1957, where he raised his three children. He loved his home, his yard, and his garden.

Johnny Farina, as he was well known, was a committed active member of the community and local parish church Our Lady of the Assumption.

John was a former VFW Post Commander, a member of the Knights of Columbus, of the CYL, and the American Legion.

John had an outgoing and friendly personality. His faith and beliefs made him put family and friends’ needs above his own. He was terrible at remembering names but if he did forget yours, rest assured he would call you ‘my friend’. That phrase couldn’t be further from the truth, as he was quick to consider people friends.

John’s unwavering persistence and natural charisma helped him to gain the approval and funding for one of his proudest achievements –to rebuild the Veteran’s Plaza in Copiague. This small example of his commitment to country

and community lead to the honorary dedication and street naming on May 21, 2023. The corner of Ferndale Court and Hawkins Boulevard was named John Farina Way in Copiague. His wonderful sense of humor was evident here too when he mentioned to friends that he would eventually install a toll booth there.

John was truly “one of the good ones” whose impact will be forever felt by his family and friends that love him dearly. He was a selfless family man whose passing left an unfillable gap in the hearts of his loved ones and his community. His ability to sacrifice, provide, support, add humor and love to any and all situations will be forever ingrained in all he knew.

8th Annual Heroes Against Heroin 5K Walk

The John Brower, Jr. Foundation, in partnership with Outreach, will host the 8th Annual Heroes Against Heroin 5K Walk on Saturday, September 9, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at Jones Beach State Park, Parking Field 1 (checkin begins at 9:00 a.m.).

The Walk was established by the Brower family (parents John, Sr. and Jody, and their children Kristen and Robert) in 2014 after they tragically lost their son John, Jr. to an opioid overdose in 2014. The aim of the event is to raise awareness about the opioid epidemic and the suppport needed to fight the problem that continues to devastate families and communities throughout Long Island. All funds raised support Outreach’s life-saving treatment programs and services for individuals and families.

The Walk along the historic Jones Beach Boardwalk serves as an ongoing tribute

to the memory of John Brower, Jr. and others who have been lost to the ongoing opioid crisis. The Walk offers information to inspire and educate the public about substance and alcohol use disorders and the treatment options available to them and their loved ones. Final Summer Food Collection Drive Friday, Sept. 15, At Stop & Shop, 575 West Montauk Highway, West Babylon

On Friday, Sept. 15, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., PSEG Long Island’s Power to Feed Long Island summer food collection drive comes to West Babylon.

Food collection bins and a drive-through option will be set up at the Stop & Shop supermarket at 575 West Montauk Highway, West Babylon, where members of the public can donate nonperishable items and household essentials for neighbors facing food insecurity. PSEG Long Island is giving out reusable shopping bags and LED lightbulbs as a thank you.

With your help and the generous donations of fellow Long Islanders, the initiative aims to collect the equivalent of 50,000 meals during July, August and September. Last year, thanks to your kindness, the equivalent of more than 42,000 meals was collected for the Power to Feed Long Island initiative. Hundreds of thousands of Long Island families struggle with hunger and food insecurity throughout the year. During the summer months, there is a significant reduction

The NASTAR awards were created by the Nassau BOCES NASTECH Service to honor educators for their innovation, leadership and support of technology initiatives in their school districts. Each recipient is selected by their district

based on this criterion.

This year, a total of 27 Nassau County educators were acknowledged for their achievements in a ceremony conducted by Nassau BOCES NASTECH and Data Privacy and Security Service Supervisor Laura Pollak and Program Specialist Barbara Deal.

Have Your Furry Friends Tested Annually

The American Heartworm Society advises dog owners to have their furry companions tested for heartworm annually. Such tests can typically be conducted during routine preventive care visits to the veterinarian. The AHS notes that such tests are necessary even for dogs that are taking year-round heartworm prevention

medications. Tests can confirm that such programs are working or indicate if they are not effective.

The American Veterinary Medical Association notes that antigen tests are the most commonly performed tests. These tests detect the presence of adult female heartworms and they are typically highly accurate. If a test

is positive, veterinarians may recommend further testing, including radiographs, a blood profile and an echocardiogram. Such tests can determine a number of things about the infection, including its severity. The AVMA also notes that the additional testing can help determine the best course of treatment. Cat owners should know that it’s more difficult to detect heartworm in cats than in dogs. The AHS indicates that cats are much less likely than dogs to have adult heartworms, making the disease harder to detect in felines. Veterinarians may recommend cats receive both the antigen test and an antibody test, which detects exposure to heartworm larvae. The AVMA notes that more testing may increase the likelihood of detecting the disease in cats.
