Board Of Education Elects Officers

Copiague School District’s Board of Education held its annual reorganization meeting on July 5. Kenneth Urban was unanimously elected and sworn in to serve as president of the board of education for second term in that seat. Anthony

S. Pepe and Brian J. Sales were elected and sworn in to serve as first vice president and second vice president, respectively. District Clerk Deborah VanFlorcke swore in the board officials.

Rosemarie Natoli and Brian J. Sales were each

elected to three-year seats on the board of education in May. Copiague School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon was also sworn in during the meeting.

ARE YOU PREPAIRED FOR STORM SEASON?

Storm season has arrived in New York, is your home ready to withstand this year’s storms? There are a lot of precautions homeowners can take to make sure their house is ready to combat the storms that come our way. The most important aspect of your house that you need to check is your roof. Make sure that all shingles and components on your roof are not compromised. This means checking the shingles to see if any are loose or if any are blown off. If you do see that your roof needs work you must get this fixed as soon as possible. The strong rains and winds from storms will cause leaking in your roof which will lead to the structure of your home to rot and cause leaks that may damage the structure of your house. The next aspect of your home you should check is your gutters. Make sure they are cleaned, and water is able to fill up and be diverted away from your house. Make sure that the downspouts to your gutters are pointed away from the foundation of your home and are clear for water to flow through easily. If gutters are not able to keep a constant flow of water away from your home the facia that the gutters are attached to will rot. This may cause your gutters to fall off your home, leaving your house vulnerable to leaks and cracks. Finally, make sure that all your windows and doors can lock & are airtight. Water should not be able to infiltrate through these openings. Make sure the soil around your window wells is loose and able to absorb water so no flooding can occur. Maritime Club Hits The Waters

To finish up the school year, the Maritime Studies Club at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School, advised by Mr. Garcia and Mr. Travis, took to the water. Students spent the day fishing at Robert Moses pier. Throughout the day,

the club members tested their skill and strength, battling striped bass and giant bluefish. Located on Long Island’s south shore, Copiague is fortunate to be near to some of the best fishing spots in the state. The Maritime Studies Club gives students the

opportunity to learn about their community’s rich maritime culture and experience it firsthand. The club is always accepting new members during the school year.

Town Of Babylon Receives Funding To Fuel Infrastructure Improvements Award From BRIDGE NY To Enhance Phelps Lane Culvert

The Town of Babylon recently received funding from New York State’s BRIDGE NY initiative to replace a crucial culvert in the community. The BRIDGE NY initiative combats climate change through the support of projects that reduce the risk of flooding, improving structure resiliency and enhancing regional economic status as well. As part of the recent funding announced by New York Governor Kathy Hochul, the Town was awarded $1.96 million to replace the Phelps Lane culvert

carrying the tributary to Carlls River in Suffolk County.

“This funding assists us in making the necessary additions to improve the safety, sustainability and reliability of infrastructure,” said Town of Hempstead Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “Our daily interactions with our crucial infrastructure, especially bridges and culverts, allow us to often take their resiliency for granted. However, it is our significant and perpetual use of them that makes the maintenance and upgrades of

our infrastructure paramount.”

The $1.96 million award given to the Town of Babylon was part of $516 million in enhanced assistance allocated to 141 local governments by BRIDGE NY. Long

Island received the most funding of any New York region, totaling $73.5 million. Over 140 bridges and culverts in New York State will be enhanced to better withstand extreme weather and boost safety. Local governments will

be supported throughout the entire process of their infrastructure improvements, from design to right-ofway acquisition to construction.

Prior to this recent designation of funding,

the BRIDGE NY initiative distributed more than $716 million to local governments. The capital plan adopted by the State last year committed $1 billion to BRIDGE NY, almost doubling the size of the program.

CAD/CAM experience (AutoCad/MasterCam) a Plus. Experience using VMC’s and or Wire EDM a Plus.
