The Town of Babylon recently presented Heroism Awards, the Town’s highest honor, to several of the Overlook Beach lifeguards in recognition of various saves they made both in June and July. Supervisor Schaffer, Councilman Tony Martinez & Councilman Terence McSweeney stopped by the beach to say great job by all of these lifeguards and to thank them and all of our lifeguards for the work they do to keep our pool and beaches safe all summer long.

Copiague’s Fifth Graders Celebrate Next Chapter

Standing together for the last time as elementary students, Copiague School District’s four elementary schools celebrated the fifth grade classes with moving up ceremonies on June 15 and 16 and 20. Deauville

Gardens East, Deauville Gardens West, Great Neck Road and Susan E. Wiley elementary schools each held their own respective ceremonies to celebrate their school’s Class of 2023.

Invited guests cheered on the students as they were welcomed into the auditorium. Guests and students were welcomed by their principals and assistant principals, who all offered words of

advice as they start their new chapter at Copiague Middle School next year. The fifth grade teachers also took to the podium to impart their wisdom on their students.

One by one, each fifth grade student’s name was announced, met by applause from the audience. As they closed the chapter on their elementary school years,

students looked ahead to their middle school years together. To close out the ceremonies, the fifth graders gave audiences one final musical presentation.

Town Of Babylon And Wounded Warrior Project Join Forces For 16th Annual Soldier Ride

On Friday, July 14, 2023, the Town of Babylon, in partnership with Wounded Warrior Project, honored and participated with wounded U.S. military veterans in the Town’s 16th annual Soldier Ride. The event was inaugurated with a 9:00 AM ceremony featuring remarks from Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Wounded Warrior Danielle Green and

other esteemed guests.

Hundreds of eager participants rode their bikes alongside wounded U.S. military veterans on the 25mile route from Babylon Town Hall to Overlook Beach and raise money for veterans service organizations.

After participants crossed the finish line, U.S. military veterans, their families and friends celebrated the completion of the ride with

a participation barbeque at Overlook Beach for the warriors and riders.

This is the 20th anniversary of Soldier Ride, and the Town of Babylon’s 16th annual event. Soldier Ride brings together the brave men and women who serve our country with local communities to form meaningful connections and raise money and awareness to aid veterans through their

recovery process. 40 warriors participated in this year’s Soldier Ride. Thirty warriors are Wounded Warriors, five warriors are from the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, and five warriors are from Blesma, the Limbless Veterans, in Great Britain. Throughout their 16 Soldier Rides, the Town of Babylon has raised over $1.5 million for Wounded

Warrior Project. Over 1,000 registered riders were expected for this year’s event, and the $50,000 fundraising goal has already been surpassed. The amount raised is up to $140,000 with donations still coming in. Proceeds of this year’s event will benefit Wounded Warrior Project and the Association for Mental Health and Wellness, a Hauppauge-

based organization with a nationally-lauded peer-topeer veteran mental health approach. For each of the Soldier Rides of the past several years, the Town of Babylon and Wounded Warrior Project have agreed for part of the proceeds to be donated to a Suffolk County veterans service organization in need, rotating to help a new group each year.

Two Copiague Students Accepted Into SBU Summer Programs

Two sophomores from Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School have been accepted into summer enrichment program. Two Algebra 2 honors students in Mr. Lorenzen’s class – Ethan Zheng and Kaydee Bonilla – were accepted into

programs at Stony Brook University. Both students will be participating in the Stony Brook University math enrichment program. This is the second year that Copiague will have representation in this competitive program. Furthermore, Bonilla

was also accepted into the engineering enrichment program at Stony Brook. The program was highly competitive this year, with more than 75 highly qualified candidates applying. Bonilla was one of only 20 students selected to participate.

Town Of Babylon Lifeguards Honored

The Town of Babylon recently presented Heroism Awards, the Town’s highest honor, to several of the Overlook Beach lifeguards in recognition of various saves they made both in June and July.

In late June, a young girl was swimming in the ocean at Overlook when she got caught in a small rip current. Lifeguards Tommy Corcoran Jr. and David Guerra acted quickly, rescuing the swimmer from the water and getting her back to shore without further incident.

In early July, a 16-year-old boy was skimboarding outside of the swimming area and suffered an injury. Assistant Chief Lifeguard Kurt Lassen and Boatswain Pat Fallot came to the boy’s aid, getting him to shore and caring for him until further help could arrive and transport him to the hospital.

Supervisor Schaffer, Councilman Tony Martinez & Councilman Terence McSweeney stopped by the beach to say great job by all of these lifeguards and to thank them and all of our lifeguards for the work they do to keep our pool and beaches safe all summer long.

Requirements:

Minimum of 5 years’ experience working as a Tool and Die Maker. Interpret blueprints to determine materials, speciﬁcations, and tolerance for tools.

Ability to set-up and operate conventional tool room equipment. Knowledge of Stamping and Progressive/Compound Dies.

CAD/CAM experience (AutoCad/MasterCam) a Plus.

Experience using VMC’s and or Wire EDM a Plus.

This year’s ‘Back-to-School Giveaway Celebration’ is scheduled to take place on August 12th, 2023, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will be hosted in front of Freeport Retro Fitness at 131 West. Sunrise Highway Freeport, NY 11520.

Come join God’s Way Foundation’s “Back-ToSchool Celebration II” as they come together to make a difference in the lives of low-income children. They will be donating 1000 FREE High-End backpacks filled with essential school supplies, ensuring that every child has the tools they need to succeed academically. Not only will the kids receive high-quality backpacks, but they will also be treated to an array of exciting activities.

A Mobile Video Game Truck will be on-site, providing an immersive gaming experience that will captivate the young ones and let their

imaginations run wild. And what’s a celebration without beloved Disney Princesses and Superheroes; courtesy of the “New York Avengers”?

This event is not just about celebrating the start of a new school year but also about fostering a sense of community and support for families in need. By coming together, a profound impact can be made on the lives of these children, encouraging them to reach their full potential. Furthermore, to encourage literacy and summer reading, books are included, one book, graciously donated by “The Book Fairies” of Freeport, inside of each of the 1000 backpacks they will be donating!

The foundation donates backpacks which the children will both identify with and carry with them for multiple years, to ease the financial strain on parents. Parents will receive swag bags with a packet

of information containing free resources directing them to service centers where they may receive aid from locations such as food pantries, emergency housing, local churches, and more. At God’s Way Foundation, they believe that durable supplies are a key component of ‘student preparedness.’ Children growing up in lowincome households often lack the quality items necessary for proper schooling due to their parents ’ financial hardships. Their mission is to give the children a stress-free day of cost-free fun.
