coolers and folding chairs - and an umbrella… one giant umbrella, staked right at the edge of my blanket, engulfing our entire area in complete shadow. I contemplated asking him to join us; then settled on politely asking him to move, as I hadn’t come to the beach to share his umbrella. He stared at me blankly, expressionless. Then, without a word, he slowly, deliberately got up and moved his umbrella - about half an inch. Completely bewildered, my friend and I exchanged a look. Was he serious? Were we the only people who understood the concept of personal boundaries? An entire field of sand, and here we were fighting over one square foot of space. Flabbergasted, we decided to gather our things and move slightly up the beach, to a completely empty expanse devoid of rogue umbrellas, seagulls and any other potential pitfalls. As we settled into this new spot, we were startled by the sound of people squealing and turned to see our old area now engulfed by the high tide. And there, in the middle of the surf, sat our old friend and his umbrella.

Just as I was thinking this one particular winged creature appeared to be launching its flight awfully low to the ground, my friend burst into laughter as he barely cleared her head. “He literally just hit me in the head!” she exclaimed. “I just felt his feet running across my hair!” From Candid Camera to Alfred Hitchcock, in a matter of minutes. After an hour or so of baking in the hot sun, we decided to embark on our regular trek toward the Lighthouse in search of seashells, and of course that picture perfect shot of the waves crashing onto the shore. This time, I decided to make it my mission to collect several dozen oyster shells in order to create a heart-shaped work of art in the sand. About one hour, and several ocean wipeouts of my masterpiece later, we decided to head back. Now generally, after a lengthy absence, it is perfectly normal to find our blanket surrounded by new neighbors, or perhaps none, as the beach tends to begin to empty in the late afternoon sun. This time, we were greeted by a man, sitting in a single chair, surrounded by about a half dozen assorted beach bags,

On Tuesday evening, July 25th, Senator John E. Brooks hosted a Town Hall meeting to hear from 50 Amityville constituents and provided them with updates from the legislative session. Local residents voiced their concerns over community issues and provided their input on policy matters at the meeting, held in the Helen Butler Hall at Dominican Village. Senator Brooks said, “Serving the needs of my constituents and being readily available to hear their concerns are my top priorities and why I invite all constituents to Town Hall meetings like this. In order to make improvements on Long Island and in Albany, taxpayers’ input is essential.” Among the issues on the Town Hall agenda were taxes, the environment, education, senior citizen

A funny thing happened on my last trip to the beach; rather, several amusingly bizarre things that left my friend and I shaking our heads in bewilderment and wondering if we were, in fact, part of some sort of candid camera exposé. On this particular afternoon, we literally sailed along the Robert Moses Causeway, over all three bridges, and were parked in less than 30 minutes - a record-breaking feat, to be sure, and a far improvement over the recent painstakingly slow bumper-to-bumper expeditions we have had to contend with. Amazed at this fortunate turn of events, we began to unload the car and make our way to the sand, when we noticed the deafening silence. Usually, the beach is filled with the sounds of children laughing and playing, radios blasting a cacophony of musical notes, the waves crashing against the shoreline… but on this particular afternoon, there was only silence. It was as if we had entered a parallel universe, a bubble of tranquility. Once we settled in, I noticed the enormous number of seagulls who seemed to be hovering nearby, taking off and landing a bit too close

Wounded Warrior Ride

50% of the funds raised at this year’s Soldier Ride with go directly to Suffolk County United Veteran (SCUV), a project of the Association for Mental Health and Wellness. This year a check for $85,000 was presented to Jenifer Silva, Wounded Warrior Projects Chief Program Officer from the Town of Babylon This year’s ride kicked off at the Babylon Town Hall. Town of Babylon

Supervisor Rich Schaffer welcomed the veterans and riders to the event and spoke of how proud we are of all our veterans and participants. Adam Faine, the Wounded Warrior Soldier Ride Manger, presented Matias Ferreira with an official Wounded Warrior Cycling Jersey and he was also presented with a Proclamation from Supervisor Schaffer. Mr. Ferreira, a former Marine who lost both legs in

Afghanistan, became a Suffolk County Police officer in March of 2017. Wounded Warrior Spokesperson and Veteran Jeremiah Pauley spoke to the crowd about the struggles veterans face when returning from combat. Mr. Pauley was deployed to Tal Afar, Iraq where he was injured by an improvised explosive device (IED) which sent shrapnel into his right arm above the elbow. Also speaking were Councilwoman and Veteran Jackie Gordon and County Executive Steve Bellone. The Wounded Warrior Project provides services to service members, in both the United States and internationally, who have been injured during combat and works to raise awareness regarding issues that affect them as they continue to adjust to their new life.

At the April 12th, Babylon Town Board Meeting, the Town Council passed Resolution No. 319, authorizing the ceremonious changing of the name of the corner of Brefni Street and Geraldine Avenue in Amityville to “Bishop Reverend William Howard Walker, Sr. Corner.” In late June, dozens of friends, family, and members of the congregation joined together at this street corner to celebrate Bishop Walker’s life as the new street sign was unveiled.

I have discussed the difference between direct cremation and a traditional funeral with cremation instead of burial. I have previously discussed the relationship of the Catholic Church and cremation. On March 21, 1997, the Congregation of Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments granted the indult requested by the American Bishops to permit the Diocesan Bishop to allow the presence of the cremated remains of the body at the Funeral Liturgy in the Dioceses of the United States. The new ritual adaptations became mandatory on November 2, 1997 in the Diocese of the United States.

We have all heard, “Catholics are not allowed to cremate”. This is simply not true. Canonical prohibition against cremation was lifted in 1963 on the eve of the Second Vatical Council by the authority of the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (then the Holy Office). Since 1963, cremation of the deceased has become an acceptable alternative to interment PROVIDING cremation was not chosen for reasons which are contrary to Christian teachings. Permission for cremation would be denied only when it is based on secretariat spirit, hatred of the Catholic religion or the Church, or a denial of Christian Doctrine. However, “The Church earnestly recommends that the pious custom of burying the bodies of the dead be observed.” The reason interment of the deceased is preferred over cremation is fundamentally one of pastoral care. Walker was born to the late Henry and Ruth Walker in Corona, New York on April 25th, 1930. After graduating from Jamaica High School in 1947, he enlisted and served in the United States Air Force and received an honorable discharge in 1952 as a Sergeant. In 1957, Walker attended and graduated from Bethel Bible Institute, and four years later, under the direction of Bishop Roderick R. Caesar, he was installed as the permanent Pastor of Amityville Gospel Tabernacle. In 1971, Walker’s brotherin-law William Johnson spearheaded the construction of a new building that would later be incorporated as Amityville Full Gospel Tabernacle. After 37 years of ministry, Walker was elevated to the office of Bishop and was consecrated on March 28th, 1998. His

Theresa’s name will be added to the names of former recipients of the honor, on a commemorative plaque, which hangs in the halls of the school for posterity. We wish Theresa continued success and we look forward to her coming back to visit and sharing future successes!

National Roller Coaster Day On Wednesday, August 16th, Long Island Adventureland will be celebrating National Roller Coaster day with FREE rides on both of their two awesome coasters for guests who donate to the park’s annual school supply drive. That’s right; FREE rides on Turbulence and the Lady Bug all day for guests that donate school supplies on Wednesday, August 16th. The Turbulence Coaster was added to the local landmark park in the summer of 2015, and continues to be a favorite

among adults and children. The cars on this custom-made Mack coaster spin freely as they travel the tracks, giving riders 360 degrees of thrills and a unique experience every time they ride. The Lady Bug Coaster is a kiddie coaster that packs a punch. Speeding around the track, this red coaster brings smiles and laughs to all who experience it. The memories on the Lady Bug are captured on camera and prints, souvenir gifts, and digital downloads are available for

School supply donations will be accepted from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. on August 16th at Adventureland, and they will benefit Adventureland’s Helping Hands Foundation’s annual School Supply Drive.
