Trex® Recycling Challenge!

As part of its participation in the Sustainable Libraries Initiative, the Library will be taking part in the Trex® Recycling Challenge! Drop off your clean plastic refuse (plastic bags, bubble wrap, newspaper bags, plastic film and packaging, etc.) at the Library through September 1. If we collect 500 pounds of plastic refuse (about 40,500 plastic bags), Trex® will donate a highperformance composite bench to the Library. Built in 1872, the Oak Beach Life Saving Station, located in the Town of Babylon, was originally part of a network of more than twenty such stations that dotted Long Island’s south shore. Established by the U.S. government to provide aid to shipwrecked vessels, these stations were the predecessor to the country’s modern-day Coast Guard. When the Oak Beach station was severely damaged by Tropical Storm Irene in August 2011 and then again by Superstorm Sandy in October 2012, it was initially slated to be demolished. Explore the history of this historical building and how Babylon town was able to rescue and repurpose it for future generations. Registration required.

Mid-Year Review: How Are You Doing?

It seems like yesterday that we were throwing confetti, tooting horns, and saying goodbye to 2022. Today, we are just about halfway done with 2023. That means…it’s time for a midyear review.

I do love this time of the year. It’s a great opportunity to evaluate my progress both in business and my personal life. A midyear review is not just a list of tasks accomplished or goals to reach; it’s a chance to look at the path we are on in our businesses and personal lives and make changes while we still can.

In business, whether it’s your own or you work for a company, a midyear review can give you a clear picture of performance against the goals that you set at the start of the year. Done correctly, you can measure financials, evaluate strategies, and determine how happy your customers are with your

product or service. It also allows you to check in with your employees, partners, and suppliers. Are they motivated and inspired, or do they appear disengaged. This week is the best time to ask them what they need to achieve their goals in the second half of the year. Teamwork makes the dream work!

At the same time, it’s important to do a personal review. How are you feeling? What’s keeping you up at night? What are the biggest

challenges that are in front of you? The balance between work and personal life is critical to success for both parts of your life! You can’t pay your personal bills if business is bad, and you can’t succeed in business if you become disabled.

If you claim that you don’t have time for your health, hobbies, and relationships, find the time! If you’ve been thinking about learning a new language, reading more books, or joining a running club, do it!

If you’ve had success reaching your midyear milestones, make sure you take time to celebrate! The recognition you give to yourself and the people around you will fuel your motivation and selfconfidence going forward. As I said, I love this time of year because it reminds me of how fortunate I am, and we all are, to live on Long Island in the summertime.

Carnival Closes Out The Year For Copiague Middle School Eighth Grade

On June 21, eighth grade students and their families – along with teachers and staff members – from Copiague Middle School celebrated their moving

up to the high school with a carnival. Cotton candy, hamburgers and hot dogs were served as the students gathered in the school’s field to celebrate

their final days as middle school students.

Students received their eighth grade certificates of appreciation and picked up their yearbooks

during the celebration.

The outdoor tent allowed students to gather around the tables while enjoying lunch together as the DJ played tunes on the tennis court.

On the tennis courts,

stations were set up featuring different games so students could connect with their peers one last time before summer break. There was a graffiti art station for aspiring artists and temporary tattoos.

There was also a cornhole and mini golf area as well as a giant Connect 4 game. Students posed for photos with their classmates and bid farewell to the staff at Copiague Middle School.

Serendipity: A Special Creative Forum For Breast Cancer Patients, Survivors And

Caregivers

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is offering a free guided art adventure for breast cancer patients, survivors and caregivers to light their creative sparks by making art through a variety of different techniques and mediums. The inperson workshop will be held on Tuesday, July 11 from 10 am to 11:30 am at Adelphi University in Garden City (room details will be provided upon registration).

“Participants are encouraged to experiment with art and trust their imaginations,” says Kimberly Newman, BFA, the Marketing and Communications Coordinator, for the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program, who will be offering a variety of different techniques and mediums during this forum.

Co-facilitating is social worker Angela M. Papalia, LMSW, Assistant Director, Adelphi Breast Cancer Program who says that learning and practicing different breathing

exercises will be part of the session. “These exercises will teach you how to disengage from distracting thoughts and sensations,” she says. Breathing exercises have many health benefits such as improving immunity, calming down anxiety, increasing sleep quality, improving cardiovascular health, aiding in concentration, reducing inflammation, strengthening lungs and more.

The Junior Coalition of the Manhasset Women’s Coalition Against Breast Cancer, the Marilyn Lichtman Foundation and Northwell Health Cancer Institute are cosponsors. Registration is required to attend this free forum and space is limited to 40 participants. Art supplies will be provided for all exercises.
