The Girl Scouts of Suffolk County Honor Volunteers

The Girl Scouts of Suffolk County (GSSC) recently held their annual Adult Recognition Awards at the Inn & Spa at East Wind to celebrate the council volunteers’ tremendous dedication to the organization. During the celebrations, over 1200 awards were issued to volunteers for their devotion and commitment to the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County and their mission.

“Without the help of our amazing volunteers, a substantial amount of what we do would not be possible,” said GSSC President & CEO Tammy Severino. “It is no secret how important volunteers are in Girl Scouting, whether they are a troop leader or chaperone— they are giving our Girl Scouts the ability to have new experiences. Their continued support and dedication mean the world to us and each of our Girl Scouts.”

The Girl Scouts of Suffolk County have over 2,500

volunteers filling various roles as troop leaders, cookie managers, fall products managers, chaperones, drivers, and more. Each volunteer serves a crucial role in the Girl Scout troop, and their dedication and commitment inspire girls to be the leaders and changemakers of tomorrow. Troop leaders typically dedicate over 130 hours yearly to their troops, including meetings, camp activities, and events.

Girl Scouts of Suffolk County’s Adult Recognition Awards Dinner is held during Volunteer Appreciation Month as part of their yearly celebration. In honor of their 55th anniversary, the event included a special ceremony in honor of the legacy of Girl Scouts. They also unveiled a new award for long-time volunteer Dorothy L. Klug whose dedication to the Girl Scout Mission has inspired many. The award was presented to her by her daughters, Donna Lane and

Kristen Klug, who are also Girl Scout Alum.

The criteria for these awards are established by GSUSA or GSSC and focus on leadership, implementation

of goals, acceptance of responsibility, and consistent follow-through. In addition to specific award criteria, nominated candidates must meet the following eligibility

requirements to receive recognition;

currently registered Adult Girl Scout, an active member of Girl Scouts of Suffolk County, volunteer in good

Annual Jones Beach Volleyball Tournament

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that they are hosting the 45th Annual Jones Beach Volleyball Tournament comprised of 6-player coed teams. This event will take place on Saturday, July 22, 2023 and will be held rain or shine.

The tournament will begin at 9:00AM on the volleyball courts at Central Mall Field 4 at Jones Beach State Park. The first round of matches will be played as a round robin. All teams are guaranteed to play seven games. The top two teams from each round robin bracket will advance on to the quarterfinals which will decide the two final teams. Cash prizes will be awarded to the 1st and 2nd place teams. The 3rd and 4th place teams will receive merchandise prizes.

Town Of Babylon Boosts Boater Safety

Town Announces Participation In Operation Dry Water And Renames Bay Constable Vessel For Brianna Lieneck

The Town of Babylon, alongside Bay Constables from the Public Safety Department and boater safety advocate Gina Lieneck, hosted an event at Tanner Park Marina to raise awareness about the importance of boater safety. A crucial part of this is preventing boating while impaired (BWI), the leading cause of injuries and tragic incidents on waterways. To combat this, the Town announced their participation in Operation

Dry Water from July 1-3 to remind the public of the importance of boating while sober and adhering to regulations to avoid devastating impacts.

“Operation Dry Water is a year-round national campaign centered on raising awareness and enforcement of boating under the influence,” said Town of Babylon Councilman Terence McSweeney. “It focuses on reducing the number of incidents and fatalities

related to drug or alcohol use on the water. Alcohol and drugs can turn a great day on the water into the tragedy of a lifetime.”

In addition to the announcement of Operation Dry Water, the Town of Babylon renamed one of the Bay Constable vessels in honor of Gina Lieneck’s daughter, Brianna, who was tragically killed in a boating incident involving an impaired driver. Since her daughter’s passing, Gina has been a

pivotal force in boating safety and helped pass Brianna’s Law in 2019, requiring all operators of motorized watercraft to complete a state-approved boating safety course.

Gina was pleasantly surprised with the vessel renaming of The Breezy Brianna and thanked the Town of Babylon for their continued partnership in the fight for boater safety.

“The Breezy Brianna will be out on the Great South Bay all summer

long, making sure that boaters operate sober and safely,” said Councilman McSweeney. “The boat shall carry her name as a symbol, remembrance and testament to our commitment to safer boater practices in our community.”

“We need to start holding people accountable for their actions,” said Gina Lieneck. “If we give them a lesson, this can deter them from getting on the boat and drinking or being

under the influence of drugs. There is no reason why we should not have sensible laws in place, and there is no reason why people should get away with killing someone or injuring them.”

The Town of Babylon looks forward to promoting boater safety throughout the summer and participating in Operation Dry Water in the beginning of July.

The Charity of the Month for June is America’s VetDogs

As our nation celebrates Independence Day on July 4th, the team at America’s VetDogs will be nearing the completion of its latest two-week, in-residence training program at its Long Island campus, where another class of veterans, activeduty military and first responders with disabilities will receive their life-changing and life-saving service dogs.

The non-profit organization trains and provides service and guide dogs for our nation’s heroes in all 50 states and beyond, all from their national headquarters in Smithtown. Celebrating their 20th anniversary, the organization o ers assistance dogs for those with physical, emotional and other less apparent disabilities. The canines may serve as service dogs, guide dogs, PTSD service dogs, hearing dogs, seizure response dogs and military facility dog, amongst others. This year they placed their 1000th service dog and reduced the waiting time to receive one from 2-3 years to 9-12 months.

“The 4th of July is a time of celebration and, for us, it’s a time to remember the sacrifice so many of the people we serve made –and continue to make – to protect and defend our freedoms,” said John Miller, president and CEO, America’s VetDogs. “While our nation comes together at parades, ceremonies, and backyard parties to commemorate America’s independence, right here in Smithtown America’s VetDogs will be continuing our work to help those who have served our country honorably live with dignity and their own independence.”

It costs more than $50,000 to breed, raise, train and place one service or guide dog, yet the organization provides its services at absolutely no charge, including a lifetime of aftercare support for their graduates after they return home. However, none of America’s VetDogs’ mission can be accomplished without donors, sponsors and volunteers. Every e ort made from generous individuals is greatly appreciated and never goes unnoticed.

Giving Bark Thursday: Held on July 13, this is a 24-hour online event geared towards raising awareness and funds for America’s VetDogs.
