Science Researchers Take Top Awards At Covanta

Nine students from the Copiague School District were recognized by the Town of Babylon for placing among the top students who entered the Babylon Covantage EcoTech Scholarship Contest during an awards presentation at Babylon Town Hall on May 6. Four

students from Copiague Middle School and five students from Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School took home nine of the top 10 awards.

Key Club And Kiwanis Connect During Annual Breakfast

Members of the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Key Club received recognitions and scholarships from the Kiwanis Club of Copiague during their annual breakfast on May 23. After enjoying breakfast

together, Kiwanis Club members and students were treated to a medley of songs performed by the cast of “Little Shop of Horrors.”

Senior members of the Key Club were chosen for scholarships presented by

Kiwanis Club president Carol Lynch. Although the scholarship amounts will not be announced until the school’s senior awards night in June, the following students were recognized as scholarship winners: Jason Majano Mercado,

Alyssa Mancuso, Sierra DaSilva, Edison Peguero Rosario and Thomas Reyes.

The Charity of the Month for June is America’s VetDogs

America’s VetDogs is a non-profit organization that trains and provides service and guide dogs for veterans, active-duty military, and first responders with disabilities in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and beyond. Their national headquarters are located right on Long Island in Smithtown, NY. This year they placed their 1000th service dog and successfully reduced the waiting time to receive a service dog from 2-3 years to 9-12 months!

The journey their service dogs go on is quite fascinating and in-depth. These dogs undergo specific training to make sure they can help others to the best of their ability.

America’s VetDogs works primarily with Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers or a mix of the two breeds. They breed the dogs themselves to ensure the canines have the lineage, intelligence and temperament to excel in helping others. Each newborn pup then resides in their Puppy Nursery for about 8 weeks until the future service dog is placed in its innovative Prison Puppy Program.

Through this special program, America’s VetDogs has partnered with more than a dozen correctional facilities along the East Coast. Carefully selected incarcerated individuals are paired with a puppy and, with support from America’s VetDogs’ expert advisors, teach the puppy good house manners, basic obedience and rudimentary service dog tasks. In many facilities, incarcerated veterans are participating in the program.

On the weekends, the puppies reside with Weekend Puppy Raisers, which typically live within 30 miles of a correctional facility. These volunteers teach house

Puppy Raisers provide loving homes and care for each furry friend until they’re old enough to move onto the next step.

After about 14 to 16 months, the puppies return to America’s VetDogs’ Smithtown location for formal service dog training. Each get assigned to a Certified Service Dog Instructor, who will work with the dog for the next 3-4 months, teaching advanced tasks and customizing its training to match the needs of its future handler. A dog can be trained to pick up dropped items, open doors, press pushplates on power-assisted doors, perform nightmare interruption, provide balance and stability and more.

When a dog is deemed “class-ready,” the chosen handler is invited to a 2 week on-campus class in America’s VetDogs’ newly renovated student residence to complete the training, where they will learn how to work with the dog to become a new team for independence.

A New Book Club For Those Affected By Breast Cancer

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is starting a life-affirming book club called the Warriors Book Club that is open to anyone affected by breast cancer. The group will zoom on Monday, July 10, from 7 pm to 8 pm.

The first book to be read is “The Getaway Girls” by Dee MacDonald, a funny romantic comedy about love, friends, family and self-discovery. Three very different women all agree it’s about time they had a holiday

The Warriors Book Club is the brainchild of Adelphi Hotline Volunteer Lynne Borah from Plainview. Borah, a 20-year breast cancer survivor, says “Reading is my favorite getaway,” which is why she decided to start the book club to help others escape from any difficulties they are having.

Symposium Showcases The Stars Of Copiague’s Science Program

symposium on May 17 in the school’s cafeteria.

Councilman DuWayne Gregory presented proclamations to the five seniors in the program: Laila Campbell, Nayshawn Ferebee, Francheska Guzman Guittierrez, Alice Sztabinski and Edison Peguero Rosario. This year’s keynote speaker was Abigail Romero, 2019 Copiague graduate and a recent graduate of Harvard University.

Several Copiague science research students presented a brief overview of their projects, many of which have garnered numerous awards throughout the school year. Projects were on display for a poster presentation walk prior to the ceremony, giving attendees an opportunity to speak with the students firsthand about their research.
