Helen Martin & Trade Winds Scholarships For Achievement 2023

At least two $1,000.00 Scholarships will be awarded to students who have had personal experience with homelessness. Students must be a current resident of Nassau or Suffolk County (unless already enrolled in college or trade school elsewhere, with a previous residence in Nassau or Suffolk Counties), and have attended elementary, middle and/or high school in Nassau or Suffolk Counties.

Applicants must enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study or other licensed vocational program no later than the fall session of 2024.

Complete packages must be received by 12:00 p.m. on Friday, June 15 and must include each of the following:

-Student Application

-Letter(s) of Recommendation

-Essay

-School Transcript; documentation of GED Completion (if applicable)

Incomplete and late

packages will not be considered.

How scholarship recipients are chosen

• Grade point average 2.0 or higher (“C” average)

• Quality of essay

• Letter(s) of recommendation – minimum of two are required

• Review and selection by the Helen Martin Scholarship Committee

If you are selected to receive a scholarship

• You will be notified by July 31, 2023.

• AWARDEES ARE ENCOURAGED (NOT REQUIRED) TO PARTICIPATE IN A VIRTUAL SESSION AT THE KEYS FOR THE HOMELESS CONFERENCE. DETAILS TO BE DISCUSSED UPON AWARD.

As part of its participation in the Sustainable Libraries Initiative, the Library will be taking part in the Trex® Recycling Challenge! The Charity of the Month for May is LI Music & Entertainment Hall of Fame

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame (LIMEHOF)

is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The organization was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music in all its forms. They have proudly inducted over 120 music artists and related professionals who are recognized at their beautiful new Stony Brook location.

Music Education plays a significant role in the lives of many. In addition to granting thousands of dollars in music scholarships to individuals each year, LIMEOF goes above and beyond to keep the love of music alive and well for students. One of the ways they do so is through aligning with the TeachRock program.

Launched by Stevie Van Zandt and the Founders Board of Bono, Jackson Browne, Martin Scorsese and Bruce Springsteen, this program provides free, standards-aligned resources that use music to help K-12 students succeed in science, math, social studies, language arts and more. Nearly 60,000 educators representing all 50 states are registered at Teachrock.org. The program aspires to:

•Keep the arts in the DNA of school systems

•Empower teachers with a methodology to engage young students

•Create inclusive spaces through the arts by providing teachers well researched, abundanceframed classroom resources featuring positive representations of all Americans

•Increase graduation rates

Local Politicians Visit With Copiague Students

Local politicians from the Town of Babylon visited with students at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School on May 18 spoke to juniors and seniors about the importance of civic engagement.

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer engaged the students by speaking about local government opportunities. He talked about some of the internships available

for members of all political parties in the Town of Babylon.

Town of Babylon Councilman DuWayne Gregory talked to students about the Army and the benefits of the military. He connected his experience in the Army to getting involved in local politics. Town of Babylon Councilman Tony Martinez and Suffolk County Legislator Jason Richberg also spoke about their

political career and how students can get involved in their community.

Girl Scouts of Suffolk County (GSSC) recently held their 2023 Making an Impact Breakfast, featuring a panel full of Long Island industry leaders. Held in support of the Girl Scout Discovery World STEM & Art Center, the event highlighted the importance of the Girl Scout Mission and its many positive impacts on our society.

“Part of the Girl Scout’s mission is to help shape the leaders of tomorrow, and we were thrilled to have been joined by so many strong women in leadership for our Making an Impact Breakfast event to inspire our Girl Scouts,” said Tammy Severino, President & CEO of Girl Scouts of Suffolk County. “As women and girls, it is important to highlight these important discussions during this event, as they often get overlooked. We are extremely thankful to all that attended and supported this event as it will support many Girl Scouts, providing them access to experiences they otherwise would not have.”

The event featured Keynote Speaker Dr. Sandra Lindsay, Vice President of

Public Health Advocacy at Northwell Health. A panel discussion was moderated by Tammy Severino, President & CEO of Girl Scouts of Suffolk County, and Donna Smeland, Chair of the Board of Girl Scouts of Suffolk County. Panelists included Catherine Canadeo, Board-Certified Holistic Health Coach and CEO of Canadeo Health & Wellness Corp., Jackie Gordon, Retired Lt. Colonel of the US Army, Karen Sweeny, Vice President of Member Experience, Bethpage Federal Credit Union and Kristin Thorne, Investigative Reporter, WABC-TV Eyewitness News.

The panel discussion addressed the important topics of mental wellness and self-care, financial literacy, career preparatory programming, combatting gender gaps in STEM fields, and more. Participants shared personal experiences and insight regarding these vital issues and shared advice on navigating these instances best.

Proceeds from the event will help GSSC reimagine its Discovery World STEM + Arts Center. The Discovery

World STEM + Arts Center is located at GSSC’s Camp Sobaco in Yapank, New York. The STEM Center provides girls with interactive experiences, demonstrations, and presentations on all things Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Girls can participate in immersive activities and events at the Center as they look to discover and develop new skills through their Girl Scouting experience.

UP CLOSE BUTTERFLY LESSON - Third graders in Ms. Mullins’ class at Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague School District recently had a handson science learning experience. The students have been raising painted lady butterflies in their classroom. The caterpillars arrived as tiny larva, and the students observed them making their chrysalis and finally emerging as adult butterflies. The students made daily observations and recorded their data in their science journals. As a culminating activity, Ms. Mullins invited them into a tent where the butterflies could fly around, and the students could observe them up close. MAKING AN IMPACT BREAKFAST - Girl Scouts of Suffolk County (GSSC) recently held their 2023 Making an Impact Breakfast, featuring a panel full of Long Island industry leaders. Held in support of the Girl Scout Discovery World STEM & Art Center, the event highlighted the importance of the Girl Scout Mission and its many positive impacts on our society.
