Legislator Donnelly And County Office For The Aging Announce Local Senior Advocate Schedule

Suffolk Legislator Tom Donnelly (D-Deer Park) is pleased to inform Babylon and Huntington residents about the local Suffolk County Office for the Aging Spring 2023 Senior Advocate Schedule. Senior advocates are County representatives who come out into the community and assist seniors with information gathering, completion of eligibility or recertification applications and referrals to appropriate community agencies.

“This is an excellent chance for senior citizens to get the assistance and information they need by connecting with the County’s senior advocates right in their own communities,” said Legislator Donnelly. “I hope all those interested in the services that the Suffolk County Office for the Aging provides will take advantage

of this opportunity.”

Three Copiague Students Headed To NYS Science Congress

For the first time in Copiague School District history, three Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School students have achieved the highest honors, winning first place in their categories at Long Island Science Congress.

Andrew Falco (first place in chemistry, senior division), Hannah Alara (first place in biomedical science, junior division) and Damaris Bonilla (first place in chemistry, junior division) will be representing Long Island

at the New York Science Congress Competition in Syracuse on June 11. Copiague will compete against the top science research programs in the New York State.

The Long Island Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame

(LIMEHOF) is a 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the idea that Long Island’s musical heritage is an important resource to be celebrated and preserved for future generations. The organization was created as a place of community that inspires and explores Long Island music in all its forms. They have proudly inducted over 120 music artists and related professionals who are recognized at their beautiful new Stony Brook location.

Music Education plays a significant role in the lives of many. In addition to granting thousands of dollars in music scholarships to individuals each year, LIMEOF also awards selected Music Educators with their ‘Educator of Note’ award annually, allowing those who go above and beyond for their students to be honored with a grant that can be used within the school or district that they work(ed) in.

Town Of Babylon Proclaims May As Jewish Heritage Month

The Town of Babylon recently issued a proclamation to declare May as Jewish Heritage Month. Deborah Peretz, the Northeast Regional Director of IsraelLINK at StandWithUs, attended the recent Town Board meeting and accepted the proclamation on the organization’s behalf.

“Judaism has such an important role not just across the Town of Babylon but throughout the country and world as well,” said Town of Babylon Councilman Anthony Manetta. “It is crucial that we continue to enhance the inclusivity of our diverse community. My wife and her family are Jewish,

and when you witness the amount of antisemitism occurring in the world, you recognize the need for impactful action.”

The recognition of May as Jewish Heritage Month is one step in the Town of Babylon’s plans to enhance the comfortability, safety and celebration of Long Island’s Jewish

population. The Town is also partnering with organizations championing Jewish identity and combating antisemitism, such as StandWithUs. As an international, non-partisan education organization that supports Israel and fights antisemitism, StandWithUs is working with the Town on awareness initiatives.

“As you know, antisemitism is on the rise,” said Deborah Peretz, who leads the educational branch of StandWithUs Northeast. “The best way to ensure our children have a safe future is through education, so thank you to the Town of Babylon for taking this important step.”

“We are proud to have

a significant Jewish population and to partner with Jewish groups on important campaigns, especially combating antisemitism,” said Councilman Manetta. “As public officials, it is our role to make sure everyone knows bigotry is not tolerated and the Jewish community is welcome.”

Alzheimer’s Community Forum Takes Place June 7

In partnership with the Copiague Memorial Library, Catholic Charities of Long Island and The Bristal at West Babylon, the Long Island Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association for an in-person event called “Alzheimer’s Community Forum” on Wednesday, June 7 from 6-7 p.m. at Copiague Memorial Library.

“Alzheimer’s Community Forum” will provide an opportunity to learn more about Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, and memory loss in this brief communityfocused listening session.

We will review the basics of these conditions, services of the Alzheimer’s Association, and how we can expand the reach of programs and services.

“This provides a great opportunity for the community to come together to discuss their experiences and needs,” said Kate Anastasia, Director of Programs for the Alzheimer’s Association Long Island Chapter. We want to continue to expand our reach in the Long Island community and show nobody is alone.”

Copiague Connects With Community At Annual Summit

Community members came together to join Copiague School District administrators, staff, board of education members and students to showcase the many highlights offered in all the schools during the Community Summit on May 13 at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School.

Copiague School District’s Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen

Bannon welcomed guests to the annual event, which serves to celebrate the many accomplishments and accolades of the district. Copiague School District Board of Education President Kenneth Urban thanked those in attendance for coming together to get a firsthand view of the district’s successes and support its students. “We are very proud of what

our students and staff accomplish here in the Copiague,” he said. “We are always moving forward and making changes as needed to ensure our students get everything they need and deserve to be successful.”

As part of the opening ceremony in the auditorium, Dr. Bannon invited select groups of students to the stage to speak about their

unique experiences in the school district. Members of the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School mock trial team, the elementary school Project Beyond students, Copiague Middle School Studio Art students, the Copiague Middle School Civics Club and students in the electrical training program spoke about how they have benefited and learned from these

programs.

In the school’s gymnasium, there were performances by the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School vocal jazz members, the dance teams from Great Neck Road, Susan E. Wiley and Deauville Gardens East elementary schools, the Copiague Middle School Dance Club and the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School

Zumba Club.

In the cafeteria and gymnasium, clubs, programs, organizations and enrichment activities showcased their various offerings for attendees. Some of the highlights included the robotics team demonstrations, the police department’s Girls on the Go program, the electronic music lab, STEM learning, science research students and art offerings.

Suffolk Awarded $2 Million Navy Workforce Training Grant To Support Submarine Operations

The United States Navy’s Submarine Industrial Base has awarded Suffolk County Community College’s Advanced Manufacturing and Workforce Development program $2 million over five years to recruit and train the next generation of welders and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machine operators in support of the mission of one Columbia Class and two Virginia Class submarines.

The submarine industrial base is the United States’ unique and highly specialized workforce and manufacturing base which supports the skills and technology needed to design, build, repair and

provide support for the Navy’s submarines. The Navy said there are five industrial base pipelines in the United States and estimates more than 130,000 new workforce personnel program-wide will be needed between now and 2030 to fulfill its mission. Long Island is home to one of the densest pockets of manufacturers for the program.

The $2 million in scholarships will cover the full tuition of 100 students per year -- a total of 250 welders and 250 CNC Machine Operators over the fiveyear life of the program -- that will help local employers in the defense manufacturing pipeline fill a growing need

for skilled workers, according to Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Edward Bonahue, who said the program will launch in the fall of this year.

“This investment in our welding and manufacturing certificates will allow us to get more trainees into the workforce more quickly,” Bonahue said. “The need for highly trained technicians in the defense manufacturing pipeline is a national priority, and we’re proud that the Navy and the Submarine Industrial Base recognize the critical role Suffolk’s workforce programs play in meeting that need,” Bonahue said.

Each year on the last Monday of May, Americans celebrate Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a federal holiday that honors and mourns American military personnel who died while performing their duties in service to the United States Armed Forces.

Memorial Day has a rich history and one that’s worth revisiting as the nation prepares to honor the sacrifices made by its military personnel over the centuries.

• Freed slaves played a role in the establishment of Memorial Day. The American Civil War is the deadliest military conflict in American history, as the Union and the Confederacy each suffered more than 800,000 casualties by the time the war ended in 1865. According to History.com, as the war drew to a close, hundreds of Union soldiers who were being held as prisoners of war died and were buried in a mass grave in a Confederate prison camp in South Carolina. After the Confederate surrender, more than 1,000 now-freed slaves honored those recently deceased Union soldiers during a ceremony where they sang hymns and distributed flowers. The ceremony was dedicated to the fallen soldiers and served as a precursor to what is now celebrated as Memorial Day.

• Confederate soldiers were honored, too. Confederate losses during the Civil War outnumbered Union losses, and those losses were not forgotten by Southerners who survived the war. History.com notes that, in 1866, the Georgiabased Ladies Memorial Association, one of many similar organizations to arise in the aftermath of the war, pushed for a day to honor fallen Confederate soldiers. In fact, these efforts are believed to have

influenced General John A. Logan. In 1868, General Logan, a Civil War veteran who was then serving as commander-in-chief of a group of Union veterans, ordered the decoration of Union graves with flowers on May 30. The day would ultimately be known as “Memorial Day.”

• It took a long time for Memorial Day to become a federal holiday. Despite tracing its origins to the immediate aftermath of the Civil War, Memorial Day did not become an official federal holiday until 1971, more than a century after the war ended. This is the same year the holiday was officially designated as taking place on the last Monday in May. The designation has periodically drawn the ire of veterans and military supporters who suggest it is now more widely seen as the unofficial beginning of summer and not a day in which the sacrifices of fallen U.S. soldiers are honored to the extent that they should be.

• Debate exists about which town has the longest history of celebrating Memorial Day. A handful of towns claim to be the first celebrants of Memorial Day. That debate figures to continue in perpetuity, but History.com notes that Waterloo, New York, was officially recognized by U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson as the birthplace of Memorial Day in 1966. Doylestown, Pennsylvania, and Rochester, Wisconsin, are some other towns that claim to have celebrated Memorial Day since the mid-1860s.
