North Shore Animal League America Conducting Adoptions By Appointment Only Essential Staff Providing Care For Animals On Campus Amid Coronavirus (Covid19) Pandemic

North Shore Animal League America’s Adoption Center is currently conducting adoption by appointment only.

Our Adoption Team is contacting pre-approved adopters with a scheduled day and time to complete their adoption.

The health and wellbeing of NSALA staff, volunteers, adopters, and the community remains our priority at this time.

We currently have over 40 dogs of various ages and sizes on campus, as well as more than 100 felines, from kittens to older cats, all looking for loving homes.

As always, the animals on the NSALA Port Washington campus are being well-cared for by our devoted staff.

In addition to finding homes for more than 110 canines, some of whom were from our recent Mill Dog rescue (we saved 100 dogs and puppies from deplorable

conditions with some going to our area shelter partners,) we have also placed more than 30 animals into foster homes.

During this time, the Alex Lewyt Veterinary Medical Center will remain open to see sick patients and emergency cases only.

While we are doing adoptions by appointment, NSALA’s Adoption Center is temporarily closed to the general public in accordance with New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo’s statewide directives and to control the number of people in the Adoption Center at any one time.

How Does The New Coronavirus Affect You And Your Pets?

Pet owners can rest easy that there is no reason to believe that dogs or cats in the United States might be a source of infection for the new coronavirus disease — COVID-19 — or cause its spread according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

And so far, according to the CDC, there have been no reports of pets becoming sick with COVID-19.

This coronavirus appears to be primarily transmitted from human to human. As a pet owner, you may have heard of canine coronavirus, an intestinal infection in dogs, especially puppies, and feline coronavirus, which can cause feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). These types of coronaviruses have been around for quite some time and are not associated with the current outbreak.

To protect yourself, your family, and possibly even

your pets, from this new coronavirus, you should follow these precautions: • Frequently wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water (use hand sanitizer with more than 60 percent alcohol if you can’t wash) • Avoid close contact with people who are sick—stay at least three feet away • Cover your mouth/ nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then throw away the used tissues and wash your hands • Stay at home if you are sick • Sanitize often-used surfaces in your home and office If you do become sick with COVID-19, how then should you care for your pet? The CDC recommends that you restrict contact with pets and other animals just as you would with people. Ask another member of your

household to care for your pets while you are sick. If you must do it yourself, wash your hands before and after you interact and wear a facemask. The toughest part for pet lovers is that you must remember that you really should not be petting, snuggling, or sharing kisses or food with your pet!

The guest speaker for 2020 will be Holocaust Survivor Mireille Taub, of Long Island. Ms. Taub was born in Paris, France and was lucky enough to take the last train out before France surrendered to the Nazis. Her train was bombed; she and her family walked to safety, traveled across the Pyrenees and

passed through Spain and Portugal, arriving in New York on August 11, 1940.

She was not quite two years old. She grew up hearing stories about how her family made preparations to leave (as of 1936) if the Nazis were victorious. Mireille Taub has a professional diploma in special education and a Master’s Degree in reading.

She attended both the Sorbonne undergraduate and graduate programs at the Ecole Du Louvre. At Brooklyn College, she was

I hope this article finds you well. I pray for all those who are sick, anxious, stressed and restless. I also would like to thank all of t h o s e who are on the frontlines, working tirelessly to help those in need.

NECESSITY – STILL THE MOTHER OF INVENTION - Robert and Michael Stadelman work on their ventilator prototype on the floor of their kitchen.

For one science and health-focused family in Long Island’s Catholic school community the global pandemic and cancellation of this year’s STEM Fair gave them the time, and the incentive they needed to go above and beyond what anyone could have expected. The Stadelman family, intrigued by the global shortage of medical ventilators, built a ventilator in their kitchen with items they had around the house and in Mr. Stadelman’s first aid kit.

Meet Erin and Robert Stadelman, and their son Michael. Erin is a computer/technology teacher at Our Lady of the Hamptons Regional School in Southampton. Her

husband, Robert, works as an Electrical Engineer and volunteers as an EMTCC (Emergency Medical Technician - Critical Care) in their home town. Their son, Michael, is a student at St. Mary’s School in East Islip. Like the rest of us, they are respecting the quarantine by staying home. Also like the rest of us, the Stadelman’s wanted to do something to help.

Unlike the rest of us, the Stadelman family actually used their time at home to build a ventilator!

During the build, Robert Stadelman taught son Michael a lot about the inner components and machinations of a ventilator; about BVMs (bag valve masks), what a piston is and does, and Michael learned to work

with electronics and circuits. For Robert, this was a proof of concept prototype. “I sure with a little work we could improve this to be a viable emergency ventilator. Said Robert Stadelman.” From Mom Erin’s perspective, “Michael learned a whole lot about ventilators, electronic components and a host of other scientific concepts.” Said Erin Stadelman. “It was a great science lesson with a real life application!”

There’s no getting around it, in general cremation is less expensive than burial. You do not have to purchase a grave which costs between $750.00 and $3000.00, you can rent a casket instead of purchasing a casket, cremation fees are $355.00 as opposed to grave openings which range from $755.00-to $2300.00. Many of you think cremation means the deceased is taken from the place of death directly to a crematory without any viewing or services. This type of service is called a “Direct Cremation” and is the least expensive type of funeral service available. However, you can have a cremation and still have a traditional funeral service with a wake and religious service, the only difference being that instead of going to a cemetery for a burial, you go to a crematory.

It seems that older people don’t want to burden their family after they die and ask that the least expensive service be provided for them. But some of these folks need to understand that we, the children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters and friends may want to say goodbye, and that a funeral service with a wake, even if the casket is closed and a religious service although more expensive, is not a burden but the beginning of the grieving process.

Thriving Saturday Program Copiague School District has a thriving program it offers to its English language learners on Saturdays for 21 weeks during the year. The program is designed for students K-12 and adults who are English language learners. The program is fully funded by a grant the district receives from New York State.

According to Michelle Passeggiata, the district’s director of ENL and world languages, students in grades K-8 attend ENL classes for three hours on Saturday. Students in

grades 9-12 attend a variety of classes including ENL, math, science and social studies in preparation for Regents exams and to strengthen their English proficiency.

The adult learners can take classes as beginner, intermediate or advanced speakers of English and also have the opportunity to take a class that prepares them for the U.S. citizenship exam. “We provide all our students with a breakfast each morning supplied by our cafeteria,” Passeggiata said. “Twice a year, we

have larger hot breakfast to celebrate the winter holidays and the last day of our program.”

The program has a movie theater day during the holiday season and this year’s guest speaker was a presenter from an animal sanctuary. The group usually takes a field trip in the spring, which unfortunately was postponed this year. “It’s a real family community throughout the year on Saturdays and we miss it a lot right now,” she added.

• Stay home if you’re sick. If you’re sharing space with others, or if you must go out for medical care, use a facemask. Keep in mind that masks are currently in short supply - so if you’re not sick, masks should be prioritized for caregivers.

• Clean and disinfect frequently-touched surfaces including tables, door knobs, light switches, countertops, keyboards, remote controls, toilet handles, and faucets.

• Avoid congregating in large groups, especially in enclosed spaces.
