The Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst officially launched it’s 2021 Hometown Heroes Banner Program in partnership with the Town of Babylon offering residents the opportunity to honor service men and women with a commemorative banner to be displayed in the hamlets of North Babylon, West Babylon, Deer Park, Wheatley Heights, North Amityville, Wyandanch and Copiague. First introduced in the Village of Lindenhurst, the program has now expanded throughout Babylon where banners will be displayed on decorative lamp posts from Memorial Day to Veterans Day.

In addition to the banner, participants will receive a 4x6 print suitable for framing, a digital version for sharing on social media and the opportunity to share their Hometown Heroes’ story to the Lindenhurst Kiwanis website.

“We are extremely grateful to Babylon Supervisor Rich Shaffer and Beautification Director Viscel Moore for working with us to bring the Hometown Heroes Banner Program to all residents of the Town of Babylon”, said Kiwanis Committee Chair Ralph Somma. “Special thanks to “Navy Moms” Carolyn Mormino and Jeanine Walther for their perseverance in getting the Hometown Heroes program to the Town,” he added.

Banners cost $200 and display a picture of the service member along with his or her name, branch and years of service. Participants can choose among one of three veterans’ organizations where a portion of the proceeds will be donated.

Noelle Stanuch is a Smithtown resident who is fundraising for clean, safe and reliable water in sub-Saharan Africa for the second time through The Water Project, a non-profit organization.

This organization provides reliable water projects to communities in sub-Saharan Africa who suffer needlessly from a lack of access to clean water and proper sanitation. For each gift you make to The Water Project, you will eventually receive a report that details the technology used, the location of the effort, the number of people it serves and photographs of the process and completed water project.

“Can you imagine not having access to safe drinking water?

Not having clean water to shower with? Not knowing if the water you cook with will make you ill? I can’t, but I

don’t take what I have for granted,” Noelle said. “There is a real issue in today’s society.

We tend to not think about what we don’t live around or what we don’t see often. There are so many people suffering around the world and we need to help them.”

There is a water crisis affecting women, children, families and farmers. Every day in rural communities throughout subSaharan Africa, there are millions of people that suffer from a lack of access to clean, safe water. Women and girls there are spending so much time fetching dirty water, which leads to illness and disease.

Globally, 1 in 9 people still have no access to clean water, however, in the communities The Water Project serves, it’s 9 out of 9.

“So many of us are fortunate enough that throughout this pandemic we not only

knew that we should wash our hands often, but we had clean water to do so. That is not reality for everyone.

God has given me so many ways that I can help others! I want to make a change...I feel called to make a change.

I’m excited to see if I can reach my fundraising goal and see where God leads me next. To anyone who will donate to my fundraiser, I thank you so much. It truly means a lot to me to have your support.”

New York Blood Center Announces A Blood Emergency

New York Blood Center (NYBC) announces a blood shortage in the region, one year after New York was the epicenter of the pandemic.

Before COVID-19, donors could stop by community blood drives at convenient locations like high schools, colleges, and offices. It has been one year since these groups had to cancel their blood drives due to COVID-19 and few have been able to resume these lifesaving events.

NYBC currently has a 4 day supply of blood, which is well below what is needed by area hospitals. New York’s healthcare system requires

1,500 donations each day to treat patients ranging from trauma victims to newborn babies and their mothers to cancer patients. Donors with type O and type B blood are especially needed as NYBC currently has a 1-2 day supply of these blood types.

Eighth grade students from Copiague Middle School are getting a firsthand lesson in foreign language as they connect with pen pals across the world.

The students in Mr. Korn’s Italian class are exchanging letters on a

regular basis with students in Tortoli, Sardegna. Mr. Korn made the connection with the Italian students via the internet, and the pen pals have been connecting with their peers during the last few months. The Copiague students are writing letters

Italian Pen Pals Help Hone Foreign Language Skills in both English and Italian, while the Italian students are doing the same, so both can practice their language skills. The students write about a different topic during each exchange to help build their language base.
