New Mock Trial Team Hosts First Competition
For the first time in nearly 20 years, Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School has formed a mock trial team this school year. The team also has a new mock trial room recently completed at the high school and just held its first mock trial competition.
Copiague students worked with a volunteer lawyer in preparation to compete with other teams in
Suffolk County. As students learned about the judicial system, they also increased their interpersonal, public speaking, and research skills, as well as their abilities to formulate and defend legal arguments.

Stephanie Rafuse said, “Students proved to be impressive at every match, working as both the plaintiff and defense teams against
other teams. Many of our students stayed after school nearly every day and brought such fierce competition in their first year that many of their competitors were shocked to find out our students were participating in the competition for the first time. I’m so proud of everything they’ve accomplished and can’t wait to see what’s in store next year.”
The New York State High School Mock Trial Program is a joint venture of the New York Bar Foundation, the New York State Bar Association, and the Law, Youth and Citizenship Program. In this educational program, high school students gain firsthand knowledge of civil/ criminal law and courtroom procedures.

Friends Of America’s Vet DogsChinese Auction Fundraiser April 15
A local volunteer community service group, whose mission is to provide service dogs to assist veterans-inneed, last week donated $12,700 to America’s Vet Dogs – sponsoring two more service dogs.
“Friends of America’s Vet Dogs” started
in 2015 and has successfully sponsored 31 highly trained service dogs for veterans since. The group carefully names each dog to honor an unsung hero of our military, to honor someone who brought great credit to our
military or to recognize someone who significantly helped veterans-in-need.
Their most recent donation enabled the sponsoring of Service Dogs ‘Tammy’ and ‘Kyle’. In 2016 the group sponsored and named Service Dog
‘Sully’, who went on to serve President George W. Bush. ‘Sully’ now continues to serve wounded veterans at Walter Reed Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

The South Shore Audubon Society has begun accepting applications for two $1000 Environmental Scholarships. The scholarships will be awarded to college juniors, seniors, or graduate students earning a degree in areas of biological or environmental science, or sustainable and renewable energy .
For the Evelyn and Jerry Bishop Environmental Scholarship, applicants must be residents of one
of the areas listed at www. ssaudubon.org/areas-weserve.asp and/or attend a college in Nassau or Suffolk County.
For the Jay Koolpix, Environmental Scholarship, applicants must be residents of Nassau County and/or attend a college in Nassau or Suffolk County.

Rebuilding Together
Long Island is the local chapter of the national nonprofit organization, Rebuilding Together. The charity provides free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with disabilities and families young children. Those who receive the free home repairs must meet their financial criteria. Their mission is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They proudly help economicallydisadvantaged homeowners, so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence.
In 1992, a small group of retirees were looking for ways to give back to their community. They saw how many homeowners were struggling to keep up with the expense of maintaining the homes. Seniors needed modifications so they could age in place safely. They reached out to the national organization Rebuilding Together, Inc. and soon became the local a liate, Rebuilding Together Long Island. Currently there are approximately 120 a liates across the country.
Today they have 100 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. These individuals come from all walks of life and work tirelessly to lend a helping hand with carpentry, electrical, plumbing repairs, along with home modifications weatherization, yard clean-up and more. They have provided repairs to over 2,600 local homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Su olk counties.

With the support of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work and involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island, however they need your help to keep up the momentum! There are three main ways you can get involved with their organization:
1) Volunteer: They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills; training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection (those fluent in English and in Spanish is a plus!)
