Postscript By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I want to begin by expressing my sincere appreciation to all those readers who took the time to reach out in the last week to express condolences on the passing of my “Pal,” to relate to the sense of loss, to the closeness felt… but, mostly, to comment on how fortunate I was to share such a special bond with my grandfather and develop so many wonderful memories through the years. It is with that sentiment that I choose to pick up this week’s column. Rather than dwell in the sadness, I choose to reflect with a smile – on the love, the laughter, the photo albums, the video footage, the small possessions that embody much larger stories –

all the components that make pile of “unattributed” wisdom up a life well-lived. we all love to call upon from time to time. No matter the Family is precious. We source, the message is clear. know this, of course; but And so, we smile. We reflect. I think we tend to forget just how meaningful those We shed a happy tear here and connections are from time to there. But, most importantly, time. Only when called upon we remember. Post and her professional diploma in School District Administration from Stony Brook University. Career Options While they still have a few years before entering the workforce, seventh-, eighth- and ninth-grade students at Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District learned about a wide range of professions during the school’s annual Career Fair. Sponsored by the EWMMS guidance department, students spoke with professionals from fields such as real

estate, culinary arts, law enforcement, healthcare, forensic science, finance and automotive repair in a one-on-one setting. Students circulated the gymnasium asking professionals questions about their job responsibilities and the path they took that led them to their chosen career. Students also witnessed a live demonstration by U.S. Customs and Boarder Protection officers and their canines.

The event, aligned with Common Core Standards, aims to spark an interest in the career path students might be interested in pursuing as they prepare for college and the work field. “As our students start to explore different career opportunities and plan for their future, we anticipate this Career Fair to be an integral part of their development and success,” said guidance counselor Keri Kearney.

Publishing Party Students in Kathryn Dodd’s eighth-grade English classes at Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District celebrated the completion of their position papers during a publishing party on March 23rd. With a little over a week to complete the writing assignment, students were responsible for selecting a

topic, conducting research and developing a claim to support an argument. Eighth-graders used Chromebooks to write their papers and find at least three articles that supported their claim. The young writers submitted their paper through Google Classroom where they edited and revised their essay until it was ready for publishing.

During the party, students shared the topic of their papers and position on the issue with their peers. They then placed their papers on a bulletin board in the classroom titled “Successful, Accomplished and Published.” To commemorate their writing success, Dodd presented the students with a Certificate for Publication.

In conjunction with the center’s line dance program, students and seniors showed off some of their best moves while grooving to modern day line dances such as the Cha Cha Slide and the Cupid Shuffle. The seniors also taught the students some new steps as they line danced to traditional Irish folk music. During the visit, students created and handdelivered St. Patrick’s Day cards with an artificial rose to the senior citizens.

Senior Star at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School, received the Venettes Cultural Workshop Youth Leadership Award and the Mothers Club of Wheatley Heights Youth Leadership Award. For the past several years, McBean-Adams has attended the Venettes Cultural Workshop for dance instruction. Since eighth-grade, she has served as a student teacher to help teach young dance students. Through her commitment in this role, she was appointed the chairperson of the student teachers. For her service at the dance center and For her leadership the community, Skylah community service in and dedicated service to McBean-Adams, a senior and outside her school,

the Venettes Cultural Workshop presented her with the Youth Leadership Award during a Black History Month reception in February. For earning this award, she received a Proclamation signed by Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory and a Certificate of Recognition authorized by Babylon Town Supervisor Richard Schaffer. On March 13th, the Mothers Club of Wheatley Heights (MCWH) President Tonya Black presented McBean-Adams with the MCWH Youth Leadership Award for being a positive role model and leader in the community during a special luncheon

celebration. In recognition of this award, she received a Certificate of Merit signed by Assemblywoman Kimberly Jean-Pierre (11th District), and a Certificate of Appreciation endorsed by Babylon Town Supervisor Richard Schaffer. “I feel very honored to receive these recognitions,” said McBean-Adams. “I don’t do what I do in the community for accolades, I do it because it is something I truly feel passionate about. It is very rewarding to know that I am appreciated for what I do in the community.” Among her community service activities, she serves as a defense and

prosecuting attorney for the Town of Babylon Youth Court, president of student council, a group leader for the One Mind Club and member of the National Honor Society. Dedicated to her studies, she is enrolled in several Advanced Placement courses and will graduate in the top 10 percent of the Copiague Class of 2016.
