Shoreline Stabilization Project Underway At Tanner Park In Copiague

Essential Project Expected To Be Completed Over The Next Few Weeks

The Town of Babylon is pleased to announce that a shoreline stabilization capital improvement project is currently underway at Tanner Park in Copiague. Spearheaded by Deputy Supervisor and Parks Chairman, Tony Martinez, the project aims to safeguard the coastline.

The scope of work involves the construction of approximately 386 linear feet of rock revetment, installation of approximately 412 feet of coir logs, and backfilling and planting with native vegetation. This comprehensive approach not only fortifies the shoreline but also contributes to the

preservation of local ecology.

“The Tanner Park shoreline stabilization project marks a significant step in our ongoing efforts to protect our coastal assets and recreational areas,” said Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez. “By addressing the erosion issues exacerbated by events like recent coastal storms, we are ensuring the long-term resilience of our waterfront areas.”

The necessity for this project arose from the erosion that began to undermine the shoreline, particularly evident after Hurricane Sandy. This erosion also impacted the entrance to the Howell

Creek canal near Tanner Park Marina. With Suffolk County’s dredging of the channel in 2022, the urgency to stabilize the area became paramount to prevent further erosion and protect vital infrastructure within Tanner Park.

The Town of Babylon remains committed to proactive measures that prioritize environmental sustainability and community resilience along our south shore. Completion of the Tanner Park shoreline stabilization project is anticipated in the next few weeks.

Calvary Chapel of Hope is hosting “Christian Psychology from a Biblical Perspective”

CONFERENCE on Friday, April 5th 7:30pm and Saturday, April 6th 10am to 3pm with special guest speaker, Daniel Berger of Alethia International Ministries, who will speak on the importance of having a Christian worldview when it comes to mental health issues as well as addressing mental

health issues such as depression, anxiety, fear, and family relationships. He will also share about how family and friends can help and minister to loved ones with mental health related issues. This time will be concluded with a Q & A time for people to ask questions. Location:

Copiague Middle School Appoints New Assistant Principal

Copiague School District has named Christopher Porcellini as assistant principal of Copiague Middle School, effective Jan. 23.

Mr. Porcellini has been employed as a social studies teacher with the Copiague School District since 2004. He began teaching at Copiague Middle School but has spent much of his career at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School.

Mr. Porcellini holds a bachelor’s degree in history and a master’s degree in liberal studies, both from SUNY Stony Brook. He received a

certificate of advanced study from The College of Saint Rose.

“As a secondary teacher in the Copiague School District for the past 19 years, I have had many opportunities to build relationships with my students, impacting their education and individual growth,” he said. “My vast experiences aside from teaching social studies in grades 7-12 have afforded me the opportunity to transition into a secondary administrator.”

Environmental Scholarships Offered

The South Shore Audubon Society is offering two $1,000 scholarships for College juniors, seniors, or graduate students earning a degree in the areas of biological or environmental science. This includes wildlife management, forestry, animal behavior, ecology, marine biology, oceanography, mammalogy, ornithology or the field of sustainable and renewable energy.

Previous winners have used their scholarships to help purchase books, to pay for travel expenses to field sites, for specialized equipment or other educational needs.

To be eligible for the Scholarships, applicants must be residents of one of the areas listed at www.ssaudubon. org/areas-we-serve.
