Canine Companions is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people by providing highly trained service dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. They proudly o er their support services free of charge to recipients.

Their Northeast Region (Long Island Chapter) is located right in Medford, however they have six regions across the country and serve all 50 states.

Did you know that National Puppy Day is March 23rd? Canine Companions will be celebrating with a live puppy cam from 9ammidnight, featuring eight-week-old future service dogs. You can tune in to watch this litter of very special puppies as they romp and play, eat and sleep and begin their lifechanging journeys. Councilman McSweeney Partners With The American Red Cross To Save Lives

When Councilman Terrence McSweeney first took office in 2018, his motivation was not politics, his motivation was leaving this town a better place than how he found it. McSweeney said, “As a New York City Firefighter for 19 years and Volunteer Firefighter for 23 years, public service runs in my blood.”

Fast forward to today, McSweeney is all things public safety. Last year he partnered with the American Red Cross to

offer free of charge to every home, sufficient coverage of smoke detectors for the entire home. The program was successful but not as much as he would have liked. This year, with what seems to be Covid-19 deep in the rearview mirror he said the program has been much more successful, keeping the American Red Cross busy and both partners in this program couldn’t be happier. “Day in and day out, it is the Town board’s mission to keep our residents safe. Smoke

detectors save lives by providing an early warning sign that something is wrong. According to the national fire protection Association, 50% of all fires occur when people are sleeping.” McSweeney added if you are looking to have smoke detectors installed free of charge call his office at 631-957-3081. Special Olympics New York And Jersey Mike’s Team Up For Second Consecutive Day Of Giving

Special Olympics New York is pleased to announce that 41 Jersey Mike’s Subs locations around the state will participate in the Day and Month of Giving campaigns for the second consecutive year.

Month Of March Declared Irish-American Heritage Month In The Town Of Babylon

- On Wednesday, March 1st, 2023, the Town of Babylon declared the month of March, Irish-American Heritage Month in the Town of Babylon. Councilman McSweeney who sponsored the legislation along with Councilman DuWayne Gregory presented the resolution to the Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 2 at the meeting. McSweeney added, “The Babylon AOH is much more than celebrating Irish heritage. It is about how this organization gives back to the entire community and that is what led me to working with them on this resolution. On behalf of Supervisor Schaffer, the town board and the community they support, I say thank you.”

Two Copiague School District teachers have been recognized with the Distinguished Teacher Award for 2023 by the Harvard Club of Long Island. Copiague Middle School science chairperson

Dr. Daniel Leccese and Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School social studies chairperson

Michelle Penyy are two of the 12 teachers who will be honored by the Harvard Club of Long Island this

year.

Dr. Kathleen Bannon said, “Dr. Leccese and Ms. Penyy are both wellrespected educators and always willing to assist their students and colleagues. Dr. Leccese has grown our science program at the middle school level to prepare students for our high school science research program. Ms. Penyy

has helped implement many new programs into our social studies curriculum, including engaging students in local government and civic readiness. They are both truly distinguished educators and deserving of this honor.”

Daniel Leccese, Ed.D., graduated from SUNY Oneonta with a degree in secondary educationchemistry. He earned a master’s degree from

SUNY Stony Brook and a doctorate in education from St. John’s University. He has been the science chairperson at Copiague Middle School since 2001, after having taught across Long Island since 1993. At Copiague, Dr. Leccese has taught many denominations of science including integrated, bilingual, grade 7/8 and science research.

A teacher for 19 years, Michelle Penyy holds a bachelor’s degree in economics and a master’s degree in social studies from SUNY Stony Brook. For 10 years, Ms. Penyy has served as the secondary social studies chairperson in Copiague. She has been awarded several competitive fellowships throughout her career including Goethe’s TOP program to Germany, FulbrightHays Fellowship to China, and was given the opportunity to travel to Korea with the World History Digital Education

Foundation. Ms. Penyy has attended and presented at numerous conferences including the College Board’s annual AP Conference, the National Council for History Education and the New York State Council for the Social Studies.

The 2023 award winners will be honored by the Harvard Club of Long Island at a luncheon on March 18. At the ceremony, the Harvard Club will announce which Distinguished Teacher will also receive the scholarship for a “Harvard experience” at the school’s campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

For the Evelyn and Jerry Bishop Environmental Scholarship, applicants must be residents of one of the areas listed at www. ssaudubon.org/areas-we-serve.asp and/or attend a college in Nassau or Suffolk County.

For the Jay Koolpix, Environmental Scholarship, applicants must be residents of Nassau County and/or attend a college in Nassau or Suffolk County.

May 31,2023 is the deadline for submission of applications. Completed applications include a brief explanation of the reason for applying for the scholarship and the plan to use the money, a copy of the most recent transcript of grades, and at least one letter of recommendation. Applicants may apply for both scholarships but cannot be awarded more than one.
